SUMMARY
Russia and Iran (XIXth
-
the beginning of XXth century) is one
of the first scientific research essays in Russia devoted to the little
known aspects of Russian oriental policy. It gives a clear view of
the motives, character and results of the Russian-Iranian relations
at different stages of their development in the XIXth century. The
main merit of this work is that it is based mainly on the materials
from the archives which are published for the first time.
One of the main tasks of the Russian foreign policy at present
is to establish fruitful relations with neighboring states. The role
of Iran which plays the key role in geopolitics of the Middle East
region defines its great importance for the Russian foreign policy.
In the preface the author gives a short history of the Russian-
Iranian relations for the last
500
years. It is important to note
that there are conclusive proofs in this work of the voluntary
basis of Georgian joining the Russian empire. Chapters devoted
to the history of the formation of Russian-Iranian borders can
present interest not only to scholars and lecturers who
investigate modern history but to diplomats.

are thoroughly analyzed
in the book. The part devoted to the development of the Russian-
Iranian trade and economic relations contains much useful
information. It provides much statistic data and shows the
importance of trade relations with Russia for the economic
development of the Northern provinces of Iran. The author
investigated the process of giving concessions to the Russian
government and loans to the Shah s government.
The most topical is the material concerning the position of
both countries during the Iranian revolution of
1905-1907,
the

of the first Constitution and convocation of the Medjlis.
Some problems of Russian-Iranian relations during World War I
are shortly covered in the book.
