Summary
The commune of Darcauti is located in the north-east of
Soroca
dis¬
trict in the Republic of Moldova

km from the district center and
190
km from the capital of the republic, city of Chisinau. It consists of two
villages: Darcauti and
Malcauti.
The village of Darcauti was mentioned for the first time on July
5,
1680.
The land belonged to the rezeshs, free peasants, and the big feudal
lords. From the second half of the 18th century to
1920,
the Moldovan
Metropoly
in Iashi owned the major part of the estate. The local pea¬
sants cultivated this land.
The first documentary reference of the village of
Malcauti
was on
October
20, 1640.
Initially, it was a settlement of the free peasants (re-
zeshes), who protected the eastern border of Moldova. Later they beca¬
me dependent on the big landowners.
In
1749,
in Moldova the serfdom was abolished and all peasants be¬
came legally free. In
1812,
the Russian Empire annexed the Dniester
-
Prut interfluve of Moldova, conferring the name of Bessarabia to this
area. These villages were forced to live pursuant to the Russian laws until
1917,
when the Moldavian Peoples Republic was proclaimed. In
1918
Bessarabia united with Romania. In
1920,
in the course of the Bessara-
bian agrarian reform, the estates of the big landlords and the monastery
lands were expropriated, and the peasants received the considerable
plots of arable land with the right of purchase within
20
years.
In
1940,
once the Soviet power came, the both villages were inclu¬
ded in Zgurtsky district. At the fronts of the World War II,

men died. For the first time, during the after-war
years, two villages suffered from the fierce drought and famine. On July
6,1949,
the Soviet authorities deported

persons from the families of

the well-to-do peasants of the village of Darcauti to the Siberia. In the
same year, in the village of Darcauti, two kolkhozs were organized and
one kolkhoz
-
in the village of
Malcauti. In
1953,
these farms were mer¬
ged in one farm. In
1992,
the kolkhoz land and property was privatized
and it was disintegrated. Currently,

agrarian LLCs,

farms work in the
commune.
St. Nicolas Church in the village of Darcauti was mentioned in the
documents in
1809,
though it had existed before. In
1877
the church
that works at present was built. The soviet authorities closed it. After
proclamation of independence of the Republic of Moldova (in
1991),
the church was repaired and was reopened. In the village of
Malcauti
,
the church existed up to
1860.
After
1991
the new church was built. The
parish priest archpriest Sergey Ungureanu serves in the both churches.
The school was opened in the village of Darcauti in
1895,
in the
village of
Malcauti
-
in
1927.
Now, in the village of Darcauti there is the
gymnasium (Director
Maia
Cretu
)
and in the village of
Malcauti
there
is the primary school (Director
Marianna Vinaga).
The kindergarten (Head Raisa Bacalim), the library (Head Ecate-
rina Ungureanu), the family doctor (Doctor
Tamara
Maslo),
the Post
Office (Head Raisa Sevciuc), the club (Head Igor Lisnic), the police sta¬
tion (Major Vitalie Volnitchi) work in the commune.
The local council consists of
