Summary
The book is an autobiography of a Polish historian of ideas, who spe¬
cializes in Russian and Polish intellectual history, the history of
liberal thought and of Marxism. But the book is not just an account of
a life of a man of learning.
Andrzej Walicki
(born
1930)
has always
combined the history of ideas with intensive experiencing of his own
difficult contemporaneity, and with an active attitude towards the deep¬
ening of the historical self-consciousness of the Polish intelligentsia. In
his works Walicki has always strived to combine academic standards
with ideological goals. However, he understood the latter not as means
to indoctrination, but to emancipation: not as an attempt to propagate
any monistic system of values, but an endeavour to liberate the con¬
sciousness from ideological falsities, to widen the spectrum of plural¬
ism of outlooks, which he linked with an empathy towards people who
are different; a pluralism which would be characterised by an affirma¬
tive attitude towards individual and social freedom.
The departure point of Walicki s ideological evolution was a very
specific experiencing of the Polish version of Stalinism
(1948-1955).
As a student of Russian philology at the University of Warsaw (on politi¬
cal grounds he was denied entry to all departments apart from Russian
philology) he was subjected to brutal ideological discrimination. The
Communist Party officials at the University denounced him as a class
enemy (at the time, his father, a historian of art, was serving a prison
term as a political inmate for his activity in the Polish Home Army dur¬
ing the Nazi occupation) and as an individual who is organically inca¬
pable of accepting the ideological
conformism
of the Zhdanov type,
which was forced on the students. Nevertheless, thanks to numerous
contacts with persons who belonged to the pre-war Left and who were
close to his family, Walicki was capable of distinguishing Stalinism
from socialism. He was also spared the natural in such circumstances
Russo
phobic reactions. He owed it to his grandfather, Leon Walicki,
who prior to the Bolshevik Revolution spent many years in St. Peters¬
burg, and above all to Sergei
Hessen,
a prominent Russian emigre phi¬
losopher who introduced the young Walicki to Russian prerevolution-
ary literature and thought. Thus instructed he interpreted Stalinism as
a catastrophe, which occurred during necessary historical progress,
something that need be understood and overcome from the inside.

Summary
This attitude had something of the Hegelian bite described by
Czesław Miłosz,
i.e. the point of view assuming that there is no possibil¬
ity of frontal opposition
vis-à-vis
historical necessity. The Polish politi¬
cal thaw of
1955-56
enabled nevertheless the author to free himself
of the historicism myth and identify it with mental enslavement. The
same period also brought him to a programme of intellectual emanci¬
pation which went right through the confines of the system forced on
him. He decided to concentrate his intellectual efforts around three
issues:
(1)
releasing the history of Russian thought from the system of
lies which it was blurred with;
(2)
constructing, through studies on the
intellectual history of Poland, an optimal maximally inclusive model of
Polish national identity;
(3)
critically rethinking the history of Marx¬
ism as the ideological legitimization of the Soviet system, including the
inherent obligation of building communism , which burdened it.
Walicki s subsequent activities confirmed his diagnosis that in result
of the
1956
events the Polish People s Republic ceased to be a totalitar¬
ian regime, which aimed at ideological control of all aspects of its citi¬
zens life. In result the author could attain successes in completing the
goals he set himself. He was substantially assisted in this respect by
a fellowship from the Ford Foundation, which permitted him to spend
the whole year
1960
in the USA and the United Kingdom. During this
stay he established numerous academic connections, including con¬
tacts with outstanding representatives of the Russian emigration. He
also started a correspondence with
Czesław Miłosz
(published later)
and got in touch with the Parisian
„Kultura
centre, where he stayed
for some time during his return voyage to Poland. Of particular impor¬
tance was the link he established with Isaiah Berlin, which developed
with time into a personal friendship and a long-lasting exchange of
letters. In Poland Walicki became close with the milieu of revisionist
Marxists, centred aroung
Leszek Kołakowski
and
Bronisław Baczko.
Himself, nevertheless, Walicki never intended to become a member of
the Communist Party and took part in the meetings of the oppositionist
„Krzywe Koło
Club.
Walicki s first book, which took up the theme the individual and
history in the history of Russian thought, was published in
1959.
In the
mid-sixties he was considered, alongside with
Leszek Kołakowski
and
Bronisław
Baczko, as one of the cofounders of the Varsavian school
of history of ideas . Several years later Walicki s books started to ap¬
pear in foreign languages; first was his study of the Russian Narodnik
movement, published in Oxford in
1969;
later on this work was trans¬
lated into the Spanish, Italian and Japanese. The book received a most
enthusiastic welcome in Japan, the culmination of which was an invita-

to Japan for a lecturing tour. This Japanese sojourn is lively de¬
scribed in the autobiography. Walicki s second work to appear outside
of Poland was his extensive study of Slavophilism nineteenth century
Russian thought; the work was published in Italian in the prestigious
Einaudi series. Soon it appeared also in Oxford
(1975);
the book was
recommended for publishing by I. Berlin, who personally went over
the English of the translation. Several years later the Stanford Univer¬
sity Press published the translation of Walicki s compendium A His¬
tory of Russian Thought: From the Enlightenment to Marxism (Warsaw
1973,
Stanford
1979,
Oxford
1980).
This book, written in the allegedly
Communist People s Republic of Poland, became in the USA a stand¬
ard academic handbook, and was reprinted year by year until
2005.
In
1981
Isaiah Berlin proclaimed this book, alongside Walicki s study of
Slavophilism
,
the best works written in the field.
During the nineteen-seventies Walicki s interest shifted towards the
history of Polish thought. His autobiography endeavours to explain the
complexity of his attitude towards the offensive of the nationalist wing
of the Communist Party, his opposition
vis-à-vis
the extremist tenden¬
cies of this political stand in
1968,
while at the same time how the af¬
firmation of nationalism could be exploited in the following decade
in developing studies on the intellectual history of Poland. Walicki re¬
counts also his works on the history of nationalist ideologies in Poland,
which resulted in a monograph of the Polish nationalism of the roman¬
tic period. This book was written in English during the years
1977-78
at
the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington.
The following part of his autobiography is devoted to an analysis of
Walicki s complex and multidimensional attitude towards the extra-
systemic Polish political opposition of the late nineteen-seventies and
towards the Solidarity movement. He also explains why the extreme
political polarization, which dominated life in Poland in
1981,
persuad¬
ed him to accept the proposition of work at the History of Ideas Unit of
the Australian National University at Canberra. During the five-year
stay in Australia, which ensued, Walicki wrote a monograph in English
treating on the liberal philosophies of law in Russia (which foresaw
the rebirth of the idea of the state of law during the Gorbachev per-
estroika period), and a series of studies concerning the situation in
Poland, in which he followed the evolution of the real socialism and
cautioned against black-and-white schematic simplifications. These
studies were positively received in the West, while triggering off acute
polemics among the Polish oppositionist milieus.
Towards the end of
1986
Walicki became the O Neill Professor of
History at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana. He remained in this
447
Summary
capacity until
1999,
lecturing chiefly on Russian and Polish intellectual
history, the history of socialism, liberalism and nationalism. His main
publication during these years was an overview of the communist
uto¬
pia
entitled Marxism and the Leap to the Kingdom of Freedom. The
work combined historical analysis with a philosophical reconstruction
of the Marxist concept of freedom, a demonstration of how this concept
became the legitimization of Soviet totalitarianism and the develop¬
ment of the idea of the inevitability of the downfall of the communist
project in Russia. This work, written during the nineteen-eighties, was
published in
1995.
It summed up not only Walicki s long-term research
experiences, but also the experiences acquired during his life in the
People s Republic of Poland and his visits to the USSR.
On November 23rd
1998
Walicki received the International
Balzan
Prize for the achievements concerning the cultural and social history
of the Slavonic world from the President of Italy in
Quirinale
Palace
in Rome.
The last part of the book is concerned with Walicki s attempts of
joining the political life of Poland after the
1989
and the disillusion-
ments which ensued. It concentrates in particular on the polemics of
the author with the rightwing politicians who embraced primitive un¬
derstanding of Communism in an attitude which was hostile towards
the Polish People s Republic and anti-Russian, and who declined to un¬
derstand that after
1956
the country was no longer participating in the
project of constructing Communism , that it was departing from it
and preparing ground for the change of the political system.
