Summary
A systematic and annotated collection of sources for
priests of
Pannonia
in the
Principate
was published in
2006
and it was followed by a volume on
Dacian
priests edited
accordingly in
2007
[cf.
SZABÓ
2006
and
SZABÓ
2007].
Both of them were published in Hungarian for the time
being, yet their international edition is being prepared. The
following summary contains epigraphic sources on priests
of the province of Noricum in the era of the
Principate.
Short prosopographical and epigraphic commentaries are
added to the sources.
Priests also occupying municipal positions were included
in the summary of R. Wedenig in
1997.
Concerning
municipal officers holding also priesthood, no new
evidence was revealed in comparison with Wedenig s data.
The results of the present work are minor variations in the
reading of inscriptions and a thematic collection of sources
in itself. I closed the manuscript in February
2009.
This volume continues the
Pannonian
and
Dacian
summaries. The aim of the series is to sum up epigraphic
and archaeological sources referring to the religious life of
the inhabitants who lived in the provinces of the central
Danube region of Illyricum in the era of the
Principate.
The investigation of priests is followed by that of sacred
sites and of the pantheon. My research was aided by the
MTA Bolyai
Researcher Stipend; and I am also thankful
for the research solution in the
Römisch-Germanisches

and for the advice of Prof.
Géza
Alföldy.
Less than
2000
inscriptions survived from the
Principate
period of Roman province Noricum.
[cf.
ILLPRON].
Compared to the epigraphic heritage of almost
6000
inscriptions from its eastern neighbour,
Pannonia,
or even
to
Dacia,
where (in spite of a
100
years shorter Roman
control) several thousand inscriptions were preserved, the
number of epigraphic sources from Noricum is relatively
low.
The comprehensive catalogue includes
15
known priests or
people considered as priests, who are referred to in
epigraphic sources. These
15
persons performed
18
priesthoods, several of them performed two priesthoods,
yet none more. Universal features could be formulated
only with great caution in the case of the
с
100-100
priests
known from
Pannonia
and
Dacia
[cf.
SZABÓ
2006
and
SZABÓ
2007],
and one needs to be even more careful in
the case of Noricum. The preserved sources enable us only
to determine the local existence of certain offices. We
cannot draw more general conclusions concerning either
structure, number, chronology or even categories of
priests, especially since we know some people who
performed priesdy offices in two different towns or
through different legal backgrounds [N
1, N 9].
The effort,
however, is not in vain, because the ultimate aim is to
determine the characteristics of the Danube region, which
makes the production of a summary of Noricum
reasonable.
Epigraphic sources can differ in type, in purpose of being
erected, and in maintenance status. The majority of
inscriptions were set up on private purpose, e.g. grave
monuments, private pledges. There are hardly any
inscriptions erected by the community, and the surviving

few are fragmentary. It is a great pity that we are for the
most part devoid of the latter, since mostly honorary
inscriptions (typically on pedestals) provide complete
career structures
(cursus
honorum),
which offer an
opportunity to establish regularities.
Similar to the volumes on
Pannonia
and
Dacia,
which can
be regarded as structural predecessors, this summary is
divided into four chapters. The first chapter contains
sources referring to known priests, highlighting the types,
the provenance, and relevant direct and indirect literature
on these sources. In the second chapter I point out
comprehensive conclusions concerning certain types of
priests. Due to the scarcity of sources, this chapter is
remarkably short. In the third chapter I draw brief
conclusions on the priests of certain settlements, yet
unfortunately we know very few priests from individual
towns of Noricum, moreover, some towns provide no
example at all. Concerning non-urban provenance, we
have only one inscription probably referring to two
itinerant priests. In the fourth chapter I give an analysis of
priestly offices with provincial significance, of which the
sacerdotium of Urbs
Roma Aeterna
is appropriately
represented, whereas provincial high priests are referred to
only in one uncertain instance. The summary and analysis
of sources on the provincial assembly would belong here,
however, not a single inscription is known in reference to
this institution from the era of the province yet. The only
epigraphic source on the antecedents is included, still, this
inscription can be considered only as a preliminary source
on the later provincial assembly.
Our sources from the
Principate
era of Noricum reveal
one augur [N
11],
two flamines [N
1, 9],
four
haruspices
[Ν
10, 12, 13, 24],
two
pontífices
[Ν
1, 15],
and nine
sacerdotes
[Ν
7, 15;
Ν
2;
Ν
3, 4, 5, 6;
Ν
8;
Ν
9]
serving
various cults or religions:
Isis, Iuppiter
Dolichenus,
Mithras, Urbs Roma Aetema. One of them may have been
sacerdotalis Arae
Augusti or
Provinciáé.
The frequency of
sacerdotes
can be explained with the
higher number of cults represented, yet the deficiency of
priestly offices for the state religion is conspicuous,
especially if we consider the fact that the proportional
number of towns is by no means low, and similarly,
magistrates are not underrepresented, either
[cf.
WEDENIG
1997].
No priests are known from four settlements
(municipia and coloniae) controlled by Roman law and
only a few are revealed in five other settlements. These
examples enable us only to justify the presence of the state
religion or certain cults, yet they provide no further
information besides their sheer existence. The fact that
priests of the state religion existed in settlements
controlled by Roman law needs no evidence, even if the
lack of sources does not allow us to know them in person.
The existence of the four known
haruspices
[Ν
10, 12,13,
24]
is remarkable, since this priesthood is hardly known
from the neighbouring provinces. The higher number of
haruspices
may be explained with the proximity of North
Italy, from where haruspex families of Etruscan descent
could have immigrated from the 1st century onwards.
The almost complete absence of sources on the
institutional system of the imperial cult in the province is
also conspicuous. We know only one person from
Noricum who can be perhaps linked to the imperial cult in
the province, yet we cannot surely establish if he actually
held the office [N
9].
In this case it is also possible that he
was endowed with the title of former high priest only in
honour, thus he was adopted by the elite of high priests of
the province.

We know two representatives of a certain priesthood over
the municipal level, established probably during the
Severan
dynasty: the high-ranking religious office
promoting the cult of Urbs Roma Aetema [N
7, 15].
Compared to annually elected provincial high priests, two
representatives of the (probably) lifelong Urbs Roma
priesthood are a high number, taking the cult chronology
into consideration
[cf.
SZABÓ
2005].
The known priests were all men and Roman citizens.
Priests of the state religion represented a higher category in
provincial level. Some of them belonged to the
ordo
decurionum, others to the
équités.
Inscriptions coming to light in the future will help us to
gain more subtle and detailed results from the examination
of priestly institutions in the religious life of Noricum. Till
then, we must confine ourselves to data recording or to
analogies from other provinces if we wish to investigate
this topic in greater depth.
