Several years ago, we published
Istorie şi viaţă spirituală în zona
montană şi
submontana
a Neamţului
(in translation: History and
Spiritual
Life in the mountain and below mountain of
Neamţ
region)
which was
welcome by the readers. We observed, with this occasion, that the
religious tourism spread in the geographical area which we call Romanian
Athos.
The monasteries and churches from
Neamţ
region, old and beloved
by the Romanian orthodox founder, become again cloisters for rest and
repose for body and soul looking for by peoples who want to have a
pastoral life.
Not the healthy ones but those who are sick need the doctor said
Lord Jesus in the Gospel according to St.
Luca.
From this point of view
we saw many Romanians who straight their steps to monasteries to have
therefore a pastoral healing, in prayers to the holy sacred icons, stay in the
light of century s walls; spoke with the monarch and holy fathers of the
sacred monasteries. Much more, when we walk on the road from
Sihăstria
to
Sihla,
or to
Durau
at the holy monastery from
Ceahlău,
we saw peoples
who look for holistic places, sealed by many monarchs, old living in the
solitude of the mountain, even if their holy relics staying unknown yet in
the deep of the mountain. We hope that as the unknown saint from the
Neamţ
monastery show to us at the right time, other saints will expose by
God s will in their holistic existence that humanized the mountain. People
search The Light and by their good behaviors and facts they came to The
Light, and their first good things are their travelers on their ways to the
churches and monasteries. Of course, everybody knows that inside of a
cultic settlement we must enter into proper clothes, with chastity and
humbleness. But until the visitors learn all this details the monasteries
offer the possibility to cover their bodies with special designed linen. The
peoples are interested in and characterized by the guiding idea of the
pilgrimage at the holy places on their pastoral or clerical feelings; peoples
go to monasteries because they know that, where are peoples who
gathering in the name of God, Lord Jesus came between them. The Holy
Icons wonder-workers of the Mother of God and other saints as are the
guiding Lights of the souls of those who go to the monasteries and
churches all other the place. Not only the
Ceahlău
always had Living

from other places those holy relics are for prayer in the monasteries which
we will present in this book.
It is making a really pilgrimage at the tomb of worthy
remembrance Father Cleopa, from the
Sihăstria
Monastery and at the
museum organized in his cell with help from Father
Victorin,
the Father
Superior of the holy monastery. Even if the Holy Synod of the Romanian
Orthodox Church not yet canonized him, the Christians orthodox from all
other the country considered already as a saint and pray at his tomb as to
the holy relic of any saint from our calendar; other pilgrimage is to the
grave of the Father Ilarion Argatu from Boroaia, those who built the
hermitage The Holy Cross, on the place named by the local peoples The
Devil Pit, because in this place, during the World War II, the Romanian
troupes from here, were butchered, by the Russians who came here, it
seems, by a local people betrayal. God forgive the betrayer and the
Romanian martyr, country protective rest in peace their innocent and
sacrificial souls.
But the travelers go to monasteries to find encouraging, peacefull,
cultivated words, from the monarchs with whom we are blessing to have
among us, fathers with a life worthy of esteem and respect, by all our
gratitude, as Father

from Nechit monastery, who built the hermitage Haraicioara, father
Filaret from the Neamt monastery or others youngest fathers and livings
in holiness, father

from the Vovidenia-Neamt monastery and many
others we personal don t have yet the gift and join to meet them. We
could say, without error that on each monastery the traveler find
a guider
of his or her needs, traveler on the sea of life can find a good word, an
advice, the encouragement it need, leaving from there fulfill with soul
completion.

Another reason of the travels at the holistic monasteries are the
holy icons, wonder-workers found in the orthodox settlement, the pilgrim
kneel in front of them and a lot of them pass under the Icon with Mother
of God found in the Neamt Monastery. Some icons leave the holy
monasteries in hard times, in procession, the icon with Saint Ana with
Virgin Mary baby child in her arms from Varatec monastery, at
Secu
monastery it found the icon of the Mother of God,
Ciprus
(came from
Cyprus by the
Voivode
Vasile
Lupu
and put first in the chapel of Neamt
Castle; the
Sihăstria
monastery have the icon The lamentation of the
Mother of God paint by Irineu Protcenco; at
Bistriţa
monastery is the icon
of Holy Ana with baby Mary where
Petru
Rares
prayed in his second
reign, another icon of the Mother of God found at Bisericani monastery;
in fact, each monastery have an icon wonder-worker, where run with faith,
love and hope each Romanian found in trouble.
We could appreciate the fact that are tourist who straight their
steps (even with the speed of their cars) to monasteries as to any other
objective with historical and cultural importance not only for the spiritual
values of orthodox Christianity; it is good also, those peoples must be
encouraged to repeat their travels to search, look and discovered beauties
of the landscapes of all we have from the Creator endless kindness, from
the hand works of Man, the beauties created by imagination and work. A
lot of us start the approaching to holy monasteries first as simple tourist
but the spiritual beauties, of the monasteries determine us to come again
and become permanent guests; who stay at night time at the monastic
service, who listen the angelic voices of the holy mothers from Varatec,
from Agapia, from Camarzani and from others monasteries, sure feel the
calling to beauty and return often for one or more days, to spiritually glad
by the grace who spring from the plenitude of the holy places. Who saw
the collection or the monasteries museums, the beauty of the icons or the
carpets preserved from centuries, other values of spirituality made by the
livings from the Neamt monasteries, sure he or she told to others, relatives
or friends about this places fiilfill with benefactor remembering, therefore
the number of travelers who pass with shyness the gates of holy
monasteries raised year by year. Our book addressed especially to those
travelers from the Neamt region where combine so nice the beauties from
the natural frame of the Mountain with those of the spiritually living; sure,
if we go on foot, the observation and the spiritually possession of this
beauties is fulfill; sure will be ideal to could combine the thirst after

beauty with physically needs of the religious pilgrimage. Who has the
power to do (I saw pilgrim who walk on foot to the
Petru Voda
monastery
or to Secu-Sihastria-Sihla or to the holistic settlements around the Neamt
monastery -Vovidenia,
Icoana, Pocrov)
has many satisfaction and could
feel the reaching of the good desires, of the praises made for straightened
their life to have the Grace. Happy will be those who Groom will find
watch, when He will come at the midnight; therefore let s try do not find
us sleepy during this short life on Earth, do good things, worthy to
remember to fulfill our soul by the beauty of
Ceahlău,
to take a moment as
much as we could, between the walls of the Neamt monasteries to find
grace and our life blessing.
The Man starting to became religious since the beginnings of its
existence. The individual sacred exist before the collective ones, who will
be institutionalized in religions.
In the Neamt region, we have archaeological evidence that the
human communities from the
Bistriţa
Basin exist there since the chopped
stone
époque.
In the
Räpciuni
Basin were identified many sites with more
habitation levels, from the Upper Paleolithic (Aurignacian and
Gravettian). Between the
préhistorique
men dwellings and their
spirituall
life has been a permanently connection observed by the specialists
through their rituals objects or by their artistically expression of the reality
from their settlements.
„On the territory of
Dacia
find shelter many populations from
which some of them by their longer seating on this
vaste
geographically
base contributed therefore to this nation creation (N. Iorga,
1988).
The
erudite man was referring to the
romanian
people, which represent the
human communities who find here favorable living conditions in the
Carpathian-Pontical space.
The beginnings of Christianity on
romanians
peoples is due to
The Saint
Apostol
Andrew „The First called by Lord Jesus to become
his apprentice. He assign the task to christianize the region around the
Black Sea. He reach in the south of
Basarabia
and in Scythia Minor
(today, Dobrudja). The first episcopal center knowing on our country
territory was at
Tomis.
The inscriptions and the paleochristians basilicas
testify the uninterrupted existence of a Christian life since the II-III
centuries, continued during the time of Great Migrations and after the
Romanians Countries and Moldova foundation, as state countries, in the
XIV
century, by Metropolitans establishment, who become centers for

church culture. The
Transilvania
Metropolitan was the
following metropolitan created, and than the Eparhies from the main
cities, towns, or walled cities. The church from Romanian countries has
an administrative independence and was autonomous. Depends by the
economical jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinopol,
only regarding the dogmas. It is a well-known fact that the Iustinian
Emperor establish
,
during the VI century the First Iustinian Eparchy,
which had in jurisdiction a part of the North-Danubian territory.
In
1885
after our country gain her independence at May,

The Patriarch of Constantinopol, loachim IV and the Holy
Sinode
of the
Ecumenical Patriarchate promulgate the Autocephalic
Tomos
for The
Orthodox Romanian Church, and this was advanced in the
1925
year to
Patriarchate.
Since the christianization of
romanian
peoples
untili
today, the
orthodox church has always an ascendent way, always fulfill his pastoral
mission and leading the people on the way of salvation.
In the region of Neamt, paleochristian finds was discovered in the
dacian
settlements from
Poiana Dulceşti, Vlădiceni
and Horniceni. At
Poiana Dulceşti
were discovered

whole vessels and by fragments,
having incised different Christian signs (cross). At Horniceni have been
discovered Romanian amphorae s fragments incised with cross and letters
(Teodor,
1991).
At
Săbăoani
and Secuieni have been discovered others
Christian tombs. In the same geographic area, The
Ceahlău
mountain
called also The
Pion
mountain (or Peon) after a well-known anchoretic,
become a spiritual center for the Getan-Dacian populations, who assured
therefore the existence and continuity by raising on the lower part of the
massif walled cities, fortress at Cozla and
Bâtca Doamnei.
After the daco-romanian population was colonize, especially
starting the second half of the first Christian millennium, the populating or
most the humanization of the
Ceahlău
(in the widest comprehensive sense
of the word) was made by groups of anchoretic who built wood churches
and organized monastic settlements, knowing by the Voivodes. These
make a lot of donations, built stone churches, hermitages and fortify the
monastic settlers with defending walls.
The Monasteries become main cultural and knowledge centers for
the Romanian countries. These were transforming in veritable copy
centers for religious literature. We mention that at Iasi, at the Cetatuia
Monastery and at Saint
Sava
Monastery, but also at Neamt Monastery

were install tipografies which had also Greeks alphabet letters. The
tipography from the Cetatuia Monastery was the first printer who has the
purpose to print Greeks books from the Orient who was at that time
during the Turkish occupation. The
Dositei
Patriarch of Jerusalem
engaged himself in printing the books and by the Sf.
Sava
tipography
engaged especiall the Patriarch Hrisant
Notara
of Jerusalem. Especialk
here were print books destiny to Arabian orthodox believers from Little
Asia and Sinai Peninsula. A main role in printing the books in Arabian
and Georgian languages has the Patriarch
Silvestru
of Antiohia. From the
numerous printing we mention:

But the Neamt monasteries (and not only these) have to suffered
in the time of affliction for Moldova and for Romanian people; after the
moldavian peoples join Greeks in the independence war of Greece, the
turks,
who enter in the country, ravage the Varatec, Agapia, Neamt,
Secu
Monasteries looking for opposition centres; in the end, the European
Powers force the
Otoman
Empire to give the independence to Greece but
not to the Romanian Principalities.
During the First World War, our monasteries become centers of
alleviation the sufFerings of wounded, giving humanity assistance to the
orphans and war widows.
In this book we offer to the readers, who love mountain travels,
those who practice a religious tourism, the necessary information to know
the essential dates regarding to the monasteries foundation, raising the
churches, architecture and religious painting elements, other information
design to fulfill the desire of knowledge.
