Files from the history of life and fate of Dimitrie Cantemir
This work is dedicated to the fate of one of the most excellent
governmental and political figures of Moldova ,a scientist and
encyclopedist of the first quarter of the 18th century Dimitrie Cantemir.
Raised and educated in Constantinopole
-
the capital of many world
civilization, the intersection of numerous religions, languages and
cultures
-
Cantemir has absorbed, on one hand, refined wisdom,
diversity and
polychromy
of the East, and on the other
-
the scientific
scholarship, encyclopedic knowledge and the rationalist logic of the
West. Particularly, this symbiosis formed Dimitrie Cantemir as the first
European integration scientist. He was pioneer and creator of some
fundamental works of history, politics, society and spirituality within the
Moldovan principality and Ottoman Empire, which,

years after his
time were handbooks for generations of European scientists. These
works determined for decades to come the methods and content for the
scientific researchers of the European schools of Eastern studies. For the
first time the history of some states and some unknown or hardly known
societies were presented before the European natural, historical science.
His merit was found in the complexity of his work which included:
accumulating knowledge of geographical settlement, nature, natural
resources, the household, dates of preexisting societies, demographic
structure, haracteristics of the specific features of the people, customs
and traditions. Despite the aforementioned, Dimitrie Cantemir is not
considered one of the founders of European ethnographic science.
It is important to mention, that the historical and political events
exposed in the works of Dimitrie Cantemir do not lack the presence of
the creator and its architect

the man. Characteristics and appreciation
of the detailed work on many historical characters, officials of many
states of his time, continue to present a special interest for the scientists
studying Moldavian history, Valachia and the Ottoman Empire from the
second half of the 17th century. Being a great humanist, he spilled this

over history, populating it with live people, with their national
interests, positive and negative inspirations and actions. In his works
history had accumulated the soul and spirit of the epoch, but the
presentation of the historical characters became a new tab in
historiography.
Enriching European science with new knowledge about the Middle
East, Dimitrie Cantemir at the same time has precisely contributed to the
development of the Ottoman Empire s musical culture. His musical
work, written at the beginning of the 18th century had double
significance. From one side, accumulating and publishing different
musical pieces of his precedent contemporaries, he contributed to the
maintenance, preservation and transmission to the following generations
of a rich layer of Turkish musical culture as folk and modern.
Conversely, Dimitrie Cantemir s work opened a new tab in the Ottoman
Empire s musical culture crossing the transmission of the musical
creation from the listening method, to the usage of the musical tab notes.
Dimitrie Cantemir is a phenomenon of his period. In the era of
military and political opposition between the Christian West and Muslim
East, he had taken upon himself the role of a liaison between the two
great cultures, reciprocally enriching each of them with new knowledge,
and at the same time awakening the interest and the need for observing
and understanding each other. For the first time the Ottoman Empire
was presented to the European reader not as an enemy and competitor,
but as a country with a rich historical traditions, culture, spiritual and
political life. Talking about the European readers and scientists we
should not forget about the intellectual Turkish layer itself. Because of a
rich palitra of events, facts, dates and people presented in the Rise and
Fall of the Ottoman Empire , there awakens a lively interest among the
Turkish population.
Dimitrie Cantemir s merits before culture, world historical and
philosophical thought do not throw a shadow on the faithful son of
Orthodox religion and a truthful patriot of Moldova.
It seems that through history of the

years of our country, his
personality can be compared to the scale and importance only of Stefan
the Great and Holy. Being full of bravery in time of peril, resistant to the
clashes of life...by doing great deeds with small means through the

and political talent, Stefan-
Voda
had introduced the
Moldavian State into the line of the important European states from the
second half of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century,
obliging to take into consideration other countries interests, which were
ahead in dimention, and in number of citizens. It was mainly during the
time of Stephen the Great and Holy, when Europe found out about
Moldova and had directly recognized her as an efficient and
plenipotenţiar
actor on the international political and military arena.
After two centuries Dimitrie Cantemir had repeated his
performance. However, in comparison to his great compatriot, he did not
use armory to accomplish his goal, not with a sharp sword and clever
diplomacy, but with the literary arts, pen and paper. For the first time,
Stephan
the Great, through his philosophical, historical and geographical
work, obliged Europe to talk about the Moldavian nation, had awakened
the interest for it in the most remarkable thinkers and scientists of the
18th century.
Willing happiness and prosperity to his mother land, he aspired
make it free and illuminated, worthy of interest and attention of the
politics, scientists, literates and travelers. A couple of centuries were
needed for these dreams of the Moldovan Prince and Enlightener to
come to life.
