The Brothers Hospitallers Hospital in Krakow
in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries
Summary
In the beginning of the seventeenth century a new male order appeared in Kra¬
kow whose main purpose was to work in hospitals, i.e. Brothers Hospitallers (the
Fatebenefratelli
-
Do-Good Brothers ). They are often called brothers of mercy or
a Hospital Order of St. John of God. The new religious fellowship received from its
founder,
Walerian Montelupi,
his mansions at the corner of St. John s street and
Rogacka street (St. Mark s street). Their convent than (the first institution of the new
post-Tridentine order in Poland) was therefore established in the centre of Krakow.
The first half of the seventeenth century saw an extraordinary growth of the
Brothers Hospitallers in the Polish Republic. Over a dozen convent-hospitals were
established in larger towns of the country. This dynamic develoment to a large extent
responded to social needs for a religious ministry in hospitals. Poland harassed by
wars, hunger, and various
épidémies
witnessed a growing number of people who
needed professional care and treatment. The Brothers Hospitallers were precursors
of modern hospital treatment. The majority of the then hospital institutions took care
of various people in need: orphans, the handicapped, the elderly, the sick, the home¬
less, beggars, and tramps, therefore hospitals played the role of poorhouses. The
Brothers of mercy established hospitals in which they focused on the treatment of
the sick.
The Hospitaller Brothers in Krakow was an institution inside a convent and its
function was closely realted with the life of the convent. These institutions had the
same material base, hospital were run by superiors of the order, and part of the
personnel was composed of monks. The hospital could admit twelve patients at a ti¬
me, but it also happened that more patients were admitted, and sometimes their
number amounted to thirty. Annually the hospital treated from

patients
who stayed their for several weeks. The Krakow hospital of the Brothers Hospital¬
lers, aside to the Holy Spirit hospital, was the second hospital in town of a general
character, but it was the only one that provided professional treatment. Its patients
were in a much better situation than those from other hositals-poorhouses, for the
monks cared not only for proper treatment or appropriate medicines. They care also
about proper nurishment as an important condition of recovery and effectiveness of
any therapy.
In the period of two hundred years the Brothers Hospitallers worked out some
models of medical documentation, namely they were precursors of how to organize
patients records, and introduced records of case histories into Polish hospitals, i.e.
documents without which no modern hospital can work. The Brothers of mercy also

treated mental patients and the mentally retarded. They were well-known as running
cloister pharmacies and herbal treatment.
The approach to patients in their hospital was integral. Physical health was as
important as spiritual health. The Brothers held that spiritual and moral health essen¬
tially conditions physical health. The hospital chaplain was obliged to care for the
religious life of the patients and their spiritual development. One should note that
the Brothers admitted patients of various denominations, and the patient s religion
was not an obstacle to be admitted to their hospital.
The Krakow of the Brothers Hospitallers had functioned at St. John s street conti¬
nually up to
1812.
The partitions of Poland and the economic situation of the coun¬
try considerably affected the hospital. In the end of the eighteenth century both the
convent and the hospital were in a very bad condition. A difficult material situation
and serious destruction of the buildings could collapse. The Brothers were forced to
move to another place. Thus the Brothers Hospitallers were moved in
1812
to
Krakow
Kazimierz
to the Trinitarian monastery (the Trinitarian order had previously
been annuled). From that period onwards a new chapter of the hospital s history was
opened.
