Summary
Church libraries occupy a special place in the cultural process because of the time
they were founded and because of the function they fulfilled through centuries. Apart
from monasteries, parishes were the main centers where relevant liturgical and pastoral
aids were gathered. It is assumed that in the Polish territories books appeared in
monasteries and cathedrals by the 13th century, and in parish churches by the
14'
century, constituting an indispensable tool for the clergy's work. The subject of parish
libraries up till now has been treated one-sidedly by researchers. In their studies they
focused on particular collections of books, rarely using a synthesizing approach towards
the subject that is still insufficiently covered in the relevant literature. The analysis of
the situation in the libraries of a selected part of the Krakow diocese presented in the
article is an attempt at grasping a more complete picture of the history of libraries in
Polish territories than the ones that have been shown up till now.
The territory of the
Wiślica
provostry belongs to the oldest and best organized
administration units of the Church. The material and legal status of the parishes that are
situated there is varied; and so is their area and rank. Such a situation supplies the
researcher with a model example of differences in the Church organization in all the
territory of the Polish Republic before the partitions of Poland took place, owing to
which the study results may be generalized. Inventories of the libraries that are the
subject of the present analysis are contained in the official records of the general
inspections carried out by Bishop

The studies have shown that the library inventories were annexed to the descriptions
of

belonged to the greatest ones, as they collected books necessary for the monks
aid for future researchers in their further work on widening the base of the books
could be found in parish libraries in the period before the partitions.
