Schaeffer and his work
In my student days I got to know Schaeffer mainly as a teacher entirely devoted to his work.
I knew him also as a musicologist as well as a writer on music, a critic and columnist. But as
a composer, he was quite a mystery
-
both for me and for the musical circles of Cracow. He was
well-known abroad, little-known in Poland and even less so in Cracow. Besides, he was not really
local celebrity material. Schaeffer s compositional work proved to be, however, the most important
as well as the most individual and refined part of his many-sided personality.
Hearing a composition once is not enough and this accounts for the fact that some of
Schaeffer s works are much misunderstood or badly received. I remember my coming into contact
with his music for the first time. It was at one of the MW2 Ensemble s concerts when I was still
a student. On this occasion the music scarcely aroused my curiosity. But when I became acquain¬
ted with other compositions by Schaeffer
-
sometimes in different interpretations or realizations
-
my curiosity changed into serious interest. I am glad of the fact that the composer s music has not
become outdated; its impressiveness may lie in its unique character.
The sheer bulk of Schaeffer s output is not easy for inexperienced listeners. As a rule, Schaeffer
solves several compositional problems at the same time in his works. An abundance of creative
ideas expressed in the music makes it impossible for the listener to interpret correctly
the artistic message during a one-off acquaintance with the composition. On closer contact Schaef¬
fer s music becomes easier to understand, although it still remains ambiguous and becomes ever
more fascinating and surprising.
In the world of contemporary music Schaeffer is regarded as the most controversial figure. Some
people look on him as a genius of great musical ability, others regard him as an enthusiastic experi¬
mentalist, a creator who can produce order out of the chaos prevailing in contemporary music,
a musician of extravagant tastes who risks losing his good reputation because
of his feeble ideas, a sensitive dreamer and a perfidious destroyer, an original composer and
the author of trivial compositions, a composer responsible for both the reformation and
the deformation of music. With whom should we agree? With Schaeffer s adherents or with his
opponents? With all or none?
Schaeffer works in all genres of new music, being the creator of some of them, including musical
action, superparametric music, emotivographs or
ideologica
programmes, most probably to be reali¬
zed in the future. His output includes different kinds of composition: simple and complex, easy
and difficult, tonal and atonal, neoclassical and pointiUistic, dodecaphonic and bruitistic. There is
a predominance of compositions which are absolutely modern in every respect (often Utopian in
character) and which surpass
-
boldly and in an almost irresponsible way
-
the traditionally-oriented musicians capabilities
-
compositions geared rather towards and written
for future generations of performers.
Schaeffer s creative work is evolving in many directions, reaching extreme points in music:
it is unlikely to go any further. The problem involves the numerous genres exploited by
the composer, such as music for actors which is not to be taken as an example of some sort of
digression in his compositional work, but as the inevitable consequence of a certain stage on the
creative path of the artist writing compositions without music ; they are the realization of the ideal
of one of the trends in the evolution of music selected by the composer. The sixty years of Schaef¬
fer s creative work resulted in more than
500
compositions which means more than
250
hours of
-
This huge number sounds incredible considering Schaeffer s literary output (books, text-
music.
85
books, studies, essays, articles, features, reviews etc.), his dramatic productions
(44
plays) and his
other activities, such as teaching, performing, organizing and publishing, and, finally his duties as
a husband and father. He is also a keen theatre- and cinema- goer, an expert in literature and paint¬
ing, to say nothing of music, and he can also find time for conversation. He is also willing to come
to one s aid (he does it selflessly, in a subtle and rather spontaneous way).
So when does he have time for composing? How does he combine his career with his other activ¬
ities? How does it come about that the number of his compositions which never repeat
the same pattern is growing so quickly? Where do his creative ideas (varying greatly from
composition to composition and shocking listeners with their strange and unusual character) come
from?
First of all it should be emphasized that Schaeffer is a free person. He acts at his own
discretion. Having reached maturity very early in life, he knows his own mind and is not
governed by opinions. He does not follow the latest fashions or accepted conventions, and is a very
independen
tminded man. He once said to me that he wouldn t brook interference in his affairs,
especially those involving compositional activity. He never reveals any details about his current pro¬
ject, and if he does, it means that he has already completed work on it.
While creating music the composer is guided by his own musical predisposition,
and his approach to composing is never dictated by ambition. He works spontaneously, with
respect to his authentic and unforced reactions. His originality constitutes an almost natural attri¬
bute of his talent and his composer s abilities. That is the cause of so many innovative ideas in his
music, and the abundance of invention and new solutions. In his work Schaeffer is
governed by curiosity and a possibility of going beyond an already-known sphere of experiences
and useful conventions. His unceasing exploration of music and its inherent possibilities and his
struggle with problems discovered or created by himself is worthy of mention.
Schaeffer s innovations in contemporary music are: music without notes, music presented in
diagrams, scoresdiagrams, scores based on typescript, ideological programmes, decompositions,
emotivographs, assemblages prepared in minute detail by the composer himself (while in
concrete music recordings made by other performeres were generally used), time-unlimited music,
topophonic music, music based on collages of whole sections composed in advance, multidimen¬
sional music (as a combination of many coexisting independent lines), automatic music, idiomatic
music, algorithmic music, open-symbol music, superparametric music,
theatrical ideas, music based on philosophical ideas, music with text functioning as acoustic ma¬
terial, music of varied instrumentation, action music, conceptual music, jazz music
(composed in all its
paramètres)
and music for actors.
Schaeffer is entirely devoted to art and fascinated by its so far undiscovered possibilities. When he
is on the trail of a new idea, he remains under its influence and tenaciously pursues it. He works
out a particular problem in many different ways and tries to multiply it in different versions so as to
achieve, now and again, some unexpectedly new effect differing from that at the start.
Schaeffer s output may be defined as a series of obsessions and his composer s gift
-
as the ability to get rid of them. In trying to concentrate his mind on the tasks he undertakes,
Schaeffer operates as a mental orderliness fanatic. He does not bother himself with anything
which might spoil his vision of music. All is subordinated to the compositions he is working on.
His subconscious acts more attentively than his consciousness; the composer likes
to understand his activities ex post
-
never in the course of his compositional work.

Bogusław
Schaeffer und sein Werk
Bogusław
Julien Schaeffer wurde am 6. Juni 1929 in Lemberg geboren.
Fast in jedem Werk löst Schaeffer neue kompositorische Probleme. Seine über 550 Nummern
umfassende Werkliste enthält Kompositionen unterschiedlichster Gattungen und stark
differenzierter Idiome.
waren, u.a. in Oslo, Amsterdam, Schiras,
Princeton,
Mexiko, Salzburg, Istanbul,
Middelburg,
Introduction to Composition.
III.
Jede neue
Komposition ist für Schaeffer ein neues Abenteuer.
