The dissertation Marshal McLuhan
s
Philosophy of Media
tries to find the arguments for the foundations of a new
scientific discipline
-
Philosophy of Media, i.e. for the proofs
that it was McLuhan himself who was the most important
theorist opening a new area and developing the method of
interdisciplinary approach to the investigation of media
field.
In the first chapter of the dissertation, after the introduction
about the method, the problem of media has been
contextualised. The crucial part of the problem is the
omnipresence of
massmedia
which are changing human
experience, and question not only contemporary philosophical
idea
(
in its relation towards seduction and manipulation of
new technologies/medias), but also throw light onto the
history of development of medial mediation and awareness
about the meaning and influence
ofthat
mediation.
In the chapter Familiar McLuhan, where where Me Luhans
well known theses have been presented, the dissertation
emphasises that also this familiarity should not be taken
for granted. The work of McLuhan is very often simplified
and reduced to syntagmas like Medium is Message, Global
Village, Culture is our Business and similar.
In the next chapter, McLuhan s uderstanding of Philosophy
and Media, the disseration wants to prove philosophycal
aspect of the metaphorical text of Marshal McLuhan, and

to show that after the contemplation about media there is no
intent to dive into the superficiality of the coming media, but
on the contrary, McLuhan has understood the decisiveness
of the change in human experiences as a result of constant
introduction of new media.
In the chapter Literary criticism of Marshal McLuhan, almost
unknown McLuhan has been analised, a part of his ideas
where marvelous
analises
of literary works on philosophy
and media emerge.
In the text McLuhan and Tradition of Philosophy, the
McLuhan s ideas have been investigated by the authors
McLuhan quated himself. In this context the most important
are
Sokrat,
Decartes, Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche and Marx.
In the next chapter, Extension as origin of Philosophy
of Media, the dissertation
analises
the central idea of his
philosophy, which is the concept of extension/prothesis/
artificial limb. It is the question about the concept, as
detected later on in the dissertation, that reveals the
análisis
of contemporary times, which is not based neither on the
model of old or new political economy, nor on marxism.
Dissertation places the beginnings of the Philosophy of
Media in the interests on the ground of which started
investigations which were published in the book Mechanical
Bride. McLuhan entered the area of advertising, comics,
radio, fashion, Hollywood, press technology, slang and
generály
the area of changes in discourse, writing and
advertising. Many of later McLuhan theses are present in
this first independent work of this author.

A special attention in the dissertation is paid to the problem
of perspective. It is the question of
overlaping
times (from
Egiptian to Contemporary) of disciplines (from mathematics,
philosophy to painting and architecture) and basic questions
of techiques in presenting the world as revelations of divine
ways, i.e. discovery of new media in a presentation of
reality.
The chapter Oral-Written-Electronical, follows McLuhan s
classification of history into a period where the tribal aspect
dominates presented more or less through the medium of
sound; a period of press where a visual aspect and time
of electronics dominate, which
réactualises
the sound and
patters of the tribal in its new garments.
A book, a photography, radio and television are chosen as
media of cricial changes. Through them the dissertation
explicates McLuhans method and presents important
attitudes. The chapter

deals with the McLuhan s
idea of Global Village and contemporary tendency to
globalisation.
In the chapter dedicated to related ideas, the statements of
Debord, Bilwet
Archiv, Debray
and Baudrillard have been
analysed. The list could be much longer, as McLuhan s
infuence, directly or indirectly, was much greater than
presented today.
Chapter no.
14
is dedicated to the critical confrontation of
McLuhan s ideas and Philosophy of Praxis. On one hand it is
about a debt to teachers (at the same time critically analised)
and on the other hand, in that collision an area of explanation

opens for boundaries of the Philosophy of Praxis as well as
for the openness of the Philosophy of Media.
The conclusion suggests that what was to be proved, and that
is possibility and inevitability of the Philosophy of Media
and the fact that McLuhan is a person to be considered
as a founder, i.e. announcement of such a discipline. The
work of this complete philosopher is determined by the
announcement of postmodernism, the modernism itself being
seen in the light of the coming and developing Philosophy
of Media.
