Search of God in Cretan literature
on the example of Nikos Kazantzakis s works
Summary
The aim of this monograph is to bring closer the life and work of one of the best
Modern Greek writers as Nikos Kazantzakis has undoubtedly been. The book s other
aim is to show the search in which this writer was involved for most of his life, and
which set on finding a new God. This was to be the God who would satisfy the
needs of modern man.
The author draws special attention to the variety of inspirations which had an
impact on the ultimate shape of Kazantzakis s
oeuvre
and the conclusion he drew at
the end of his life. In this book its author describes the coexistence of often mutually
contradictory philosophical theories. The process of assimilation by the writer of
various views, among others of
Bergsonian
vitalism, Nietzschean atheism or agnos¬
ticism. What is more, it also presents the process of combining such contradictory
theories as Buddhism, Christian philosophy, Bergsonism, Nietzscheanism, Marxism
and existentialism. This diversity of inspirations makes the reception of Kazantza¬
kis s literary creation difficult and requires from the readers a comprehensive know¬
ledge almost equal to that of the writer himself. It requires the knowledge the sources
of which originate both from the European and Asiatic traditions
-
Christian as well
as Buddhist and Islamic.
The book is divided into three main sections. The task of the first one is to
present to its reader these events in Kazantzakis s life and inspirations which played
an important role in the process of shaping of the view of a young Cretan. The second
part, which is more extensive, is to show the process of searching a new God and
conclusions which the writer drew. The last one describes the attitude of the Greek
Church and part of the Greek society to the innovative views of the writer.
In order to fully understand Kazantzakis s message extensive knowledge is ne¬
cessary, both in the field of philosophy as well as theology and history. This requires
from the readers to read some more source texts and requires their own considera¬
tions. Without them it would be impossible to write or read this book.

Being
an outstanding humanist, Kazantzakis tried to go beyond the boundaries
of space and of himself. He freed himself from material problems and, being indiffe¬
rent to the omnipresent criticism followed the path that he elected by himself
-
a path of duty. He tried to incorporate into his own life these beliefs and views which,
according to him, would allow to find a real God. It would be the God who does not
demand from man to make the supreme sacrifice or give up his freedom.
Since the very beginning the writer understood that the orthodox image of the
Creator in the course of time became obsolete for the needs of modern man. And the
moral decay and decline of traditions which he observed only increased anxiety in
people s hearts and minds.
In the course of time so far unknown concerns and everyday life problems began
to appear. And both the religion of the time of Jesus and of our ancestors had been
incapable of foreseeing them. More and more seldom could modern man find com¬
fort and support in religion or God himself.
As a result many people turned their back from the Creator and religion, both of
which had not been able to offer those lost ones but actually faithful, anything else
apart from old tales and
clichés
recited for years and years.
Probably, the writer found himself in the same situation. However, at the mo¬
ment when he noticed this paradox, he asked: So what this new God should look
like? What kind of changes should be introduced into His image and the religion
itself, so that they would suit the modern man?
After years of search and studies, Kazantzakis came to a conclusion that first of
all man needs God who would help him in his everyday (oftentimes difficult) exis¬
tence. That he will be man s friend, but not a judge. He will be a support for the weak
being which man is. At the same time, the writer notices that the new God is totally
dependent on his own followers. Now they are his creators

every moment they can destroy both His image and religion itself.
He also understood that there was no one God who would satisfy the needs of all
people. Each one of us must create Him by oneself, depending on our needs, place in
time and the space in the world.
Kazantzakis admitted that God s image in his heart was changing depending on
the state of his mind and spirit. In the course of years his needs were also changing.
More questions were emerging. And answers to them, and help, could only be offered
by such a God who was changing adequately to changes occurring in the writer him¬
self. Kazantzakis was aware that in the many centuries old history of Cretan litera¬
ture, he was the first author who dared speak aloud about it. That is why there was
no need to wait long for the reaction on the part of Church authorities and circles
connected with the Church. Kazantzakis brought about rise to anger and severe criti¬
cism on the part of the society who, as he claimed himself, was not ready to accept
his revolutionary idea. He understood that more years must pass before mankind is
ready to incorporate his view into life. Because it will only happen so that the lifetime
mission of the writer will be fulfilled, and we shall be able to enjoy the presence of
God
