THE ROLL OF STUDENTS
of the University of Cracow
(1509-1551)
1.
Introduction
Several years ago the same team prepared the edition of the oldest part
of the Cracow Roll of Students
(Metryka Uniwersytetu Krakowskiego z lat
1400-1508,
vol. I-II,
Kraków
2004).
The present publication is its continu¬
ation. It represents the second original codex of the Roll. The period it covers
is from the summer semester of
1509
till the summer semester of
1551.
In
the history of the university it was still the continuation of the „golden age
which started at the end of the preceding century, but also the period of ten¬
sion between humanists and defenders of the scholastic tradition, leading
to intellectual and organizational
pétrification
and eventually to gradual
deterioration of the renown of Cracow University and the decline of its
splendour. The Roll includes entries for nearly
9000
students from over
4000
localities and forms a crucially important source of research into the
intellectual communities not only in Poland. As in the
1
5th century, there are
students at the University from nearly the whole of Europe. The majority
are obviously students from the lands of the Kingdom of Poland, with rela¬
tively few from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Foreigners are represented
especially by numerous Silesians, a large number of Hungarians (or rather
subjects of the Crown of St.
Stephan,
as besides native Hungarians there
are also Croatians and numerous Germans from Transylvanian and Slovak
towns), some Czechs, many Moravians and Germans (mostly from southern
lands), and individual students from France, England, Italy, and Spain. The
percentage of foreigners becomes smaller with time, which may be due to
the general crisis of the University, but was also a result of general conditions
then prevailing. After
1526
the number of Hungarians declined sharply, while
many Germans were attracted to the new Protestant universities.
2.
The manuscript
The present volume of the Roll
(Biblioteka Jagiellońska
Ms.
259)
is a parch¬
ment codex measuring
34.5
χ
25
centimeters. It is written on thick parch-

ment,
not always well cut and generally in poor condition (holes, cracks).
It contains
116
folios in
31
quires, mostly of
4
folios. The irregularity of so¬
me quires is the result of using damaged sheets of parchment, not of cutting
off the folios which had already been written on. In this edition we always
refer to the pagination added in the 19th century. The present covers made
of boards covered with dark brown leather were made in
1980,
but during
the renovation original
1
6th century elements were used. The original leather
is decorated with pressed geometrical and plant elements, typical of the
epoch. Some motifs are repeated on the 15th century bindings of the first
volume of the Roll and the Book of promotions of the Arts Faculty
(Biblio¬
teka Jagiellońska
Ms.
263).
This suggests the covers of the second volu¬
me of the Roll were made quite early and it may have already been kept as
a bound codex (rather than a pile of quires sown together only after they had
been completed). Such a conclusion is confirmed by the examination of the
surviving paper on the inside covers, which has traces of ink blots.
The first two parchment folios form the front part. On the recto page of
the first folio of the Roll (p.
1)
there are only pen tests. On the verso page (p.
2)
there is an aesthetically inscribed initial note (commemorating the victory
of Poles over Moldavians in
1509).
This note uses the traditional phrase
Matrica Universitatis
.
Later scribes, however, tend to use the humanist
word Album (used for the first time in the summer semester of
1537).
On the
recto page of the next folio (p.
3)
there is the text of the oath (almost identical
to that in the first volume, also quoting from St Luke s Gospel
1
:27-28). At
the bottom of the page, on the words of the Evangelist, a smudge appeans
on the spot where students put their fingers on the parchment while taking
the oath. The verso page
ofthat
folio (p.
4)
remains blank. There is no „ima¬
ge for oaths such as appears in many rolls of other universities (it is also
missing from the first volume).
Some notes, unconnected to the whole, are to be found on the verso side
of the last parchment folio (p.
232),
with which the whole codex originally
ended. It is a copy of the
annal
entry dating from the middle of the
1
5th centu¬
ry, probably by professor Benedict Hesse who died in
1456
(those notes are
also known from two other sources written by the same author).
The matriculation entries, starting on p.
5,
constitute the core of the Roll.
Matriculation (intitulation, inscription) was the fundamental act of accepting
a new member into the University, and included taking the oath and paying
the required fee. There were, obviously, students who evaded matriculation
for various reasons. It is impossible to estimate their number. There were
also ones who fulfilled the formal requirements, but were not entered onto
the Roll because the scribe failed to do that. On the other hand, some people
were included who did not actually study. In our Roll there are, for example,
entries for children (no.
1545І1/016-018
and most probably also 1545e/025
and
1
548e/042); another child was possibly the „student who did not take the
oath because he could not read (no.
151
2e/
125).
It was, therefore, the norm
XLVIII
The Roll of Students of the University of Cracow
though it was the condition for promotion to a degree. Very few corrections
in notes of fees are apparent, as compared to the first volume in which they
were very frequent. Either the scribes stopped updating those notes when
students paid later instalments, or the rectors and his officers did not attach
much importance to the backlog.
The „squeezed entries require a special mention. These are individual
entries in a different hand, inserted at the beginning or end of a column, rarely
between two lines. It seems that these are mostly the persons who completed
all intitulational formalities but for various reasons (usually carelessness of
the scribes) were not entered into the Roll with others. When they proved
they had been properly matriculated, they were added later but it is not cer¬
tain if in the correct semester or simply in a free space. An opportunity for
correcting such problems was possibly the time of approaching promotions
when the entries of students aspiring to it were checked in the Roll. It is also
possible that some such insertions were abuses.
In the whole Roll there are no instances of relegating students already
matriculated. Cases of striking out or scratching existing entries are also
very rare (no.
151011/026,
1540Є/113).
Matriculation records are, however,
occasionally equipped with glosses. Missing names were added (especially
for people from larger cities), dates of death were supplied, and especially
comments were made on later destiny and careers. Because such glosses
took much space, it is not always clear to which person they refer (e.g. no.
1
533e/023). Most probably such information was provided some years later
by the students colleagues who later became rectors or scribes.
Only very rarely does the Roll contain notes of important historical events
(on p.
2
the note about the Moldavian campaign of
1509;
on p.
130
a margi¬
nal note next to the heading of the semester 1530e about the foundation of
a prepositure
by the Church of St. Nicolas in Cracow). There are several no¬
tes on plagues (before
nos.
152511/003
and
152811/001,
after no. 1543e/018)
-
but these were in fact official communications because the University sus¬
pended its activities at such times. The notes at the end of the Roll, already
mentioned above, are of a totally different character (p.
232).
The appearance of the outside of the Roll is quite simple. There are no
miniatures. Colouring is restricted to headings, where initials were usually
decorated, sometimes in several colours
(1525Є-1525І1,
15366-153611).
The
writing is usually more careful than in the first volume, which may be due to
the fact that rectors no longer wrote in the entries themselves, but engaged
professional scribes. At the beginning gothic script dominates, but with ti¬
me the new humanist forms of writing became more frequent. Classicist ortho¬
graphy is also slowly introduced but the ae and oe diphthongs or
-tio
suffixes
are used very irregularly. Especially impressive is the handwriting in semes¬
ters

536h, later there are also a few neatly written
semesters
(1537e,
1540h,

544h), but already semesters 1538h-1539h
show the approaching domination of the swift humanist cursive, predicting

the chancery hand. The handwriting of the fifth decade looks much less ca¬
reful and together with resignation from neatly lined up tables gives a less
elegant look to the Roll. The most carefully rendered fragments of the Roll
are those in the semesters
1525e-1525h
and
3.
Existing editions of the Roll and editorial principles
Editing of the Cracow university Roll was first undertaken in the
1
9th cen¬
tury. That edition, under the classicist title „Album
studiosorum Universitatis
Cracoviensis , brought out the whole of the surviving Roll up to
1780
in fi¬
ve volumes. The years
1509-1551
were included in volume II, prepared by
Adam
Chmiel
in
1892.
That edition has its weak points. The introduction
and critical apparatus were quite limited, occasionally there were misreading
(mostly in place names), but most importantly there were no indexes.
The purpose of this edition is to provide the correct text of the Roll to¬
gether with indexes. We do not have, however, the ambition to render fully
the graphical form of the text in print. For the sake of illustration we reprodu¬
ce some characteristic or typical pages of the manuscript in the printed text
and we append a CD with images of all pages.
We publish the Roll as an integral artefact. Thus we incorporate all the ele¬
ments it includes (from the introductory note to the annals notes on the last
page) and we preserve their order within the manuscript.
The text is basically in diplomatic transcription. Only the letters
и
and
v
are normalized in accordance with their phonetic value, always retaining w,
however. Normalization is applied only to common words, also when used
in place names (such as Nova Villa, Nova Civitas). The letter
у
used for ii
is represented by ii, but retained as
у
when used for
/.
For technical reasons
the
е
-above diacritic is rendered as superscript
e
following the letter over
which it should be (e.g.
ir).
In proper names the initial letter
ƒ
or
J
was nor¬
malized so that it is always
/
(thus Johannes/Joannes, Jacobus or Alba Ju¬
lia). The reason was that such form definitely dominated in our Roll. Double
consonants at the beginning of a word are not taken into account. We moder¬
nized punctuation and the use of capitals. There was some difficulty with
such terms used by city dwellers as serifaber, sartor etc. Because it was im¬
possible to establish with any degree of certainty whether some of them were
already used as surnames, we decided to treat all of them as names of trades
and use lower case. We do not mark trivial correction made by scribes in
individual letters, giving always the resulting or intended version. Obvious
scribal errors are signalled by exclamation marks (e.g. Precopiusl). Frag¬
ments stricken out by scribes are in braces
{xxx},
while scratched out frag¬
ments thus |
-xxx-
1
.
Overwritten words (usually at once, as corrections) are
marked
лхххл
and fragments added later to the text (including much later
glosses) are presented in angle brackets <xxx>, with later glosses identified
by smaller font. Any additions in
1
9th and 20th century hands are disregarded
altogether. Text written on erasures is marked with |=xxx=|. Editorial recon-
The Roll of Students of the University of Cracow
structions of damaged places are taken into brackets
[xxx],

[...]
if reconstruction is not possible. Illegible stricken out or scratched out
fragments are represented by respectively
{...}
or I—...—!· Letters obviously
missed by the scribe are in parentheses
(xxx),
as are expansions of uncertain
abbreviations. Double bars
ЦхххЦ
signify „squeezed entries added later.
Their meaning was already discussed above. Both those added between lines
and in other scribal hands (i.e. Not found among other entries of the same
rectorate)
in empty spaces on top or bottom margins, below the heading, etc.,
are treated as „squeezed . Considering any individual entry as „squeezed
may of course contain an element of subjective judgement.
We relax the rule of diplomatic transcription with the notes on fees. The
numerals are always represented in Arabic notation irrespective of whether
those used in the manuscript were Arabic or Roman. Most frequent words
appearing in those notes are abbreviated:
solvit = st, solverunt
=
snt, dedit
=
dt, totum
=
tt, grossus (-is, -os)
=
gr. Because those notes were corrected
when instalments were paid, we do not describe the ways of adding the cor¬
rections in any detail. All we do is recording the initial and (after a comma)
final number (e.g. st
2, 3
gr means that originally there was number
2
and
later the scribe changed it in some way into
3).
When the technique of app¬
lying corrections makes it impossible to read the original amount (which is
especially the case with scratched out numbers), we put a special symbol in
its place: ¡...¡. Only when a larger number was changed into smaller, indica¬
ting that it was a scribal error rather than additional payment, do we insert
the marks for striking out or scratching out, e.g. st
{3} 2
gr.
The graphical format of the manuscript is reproduced only in a very li¬
mited scope, namely with numerous braces in which the scribes liked to en¬
close repeated elements of succeeding entries. Those braces are not shown
when they only refer to the word
de in
front of place names or fee notes
(given in singular): those elements are simply repeated in every entry cove¬
red by the brace. We retain the braces used for daily dates. We do not show
occasional underlining of entries in the manuscript as these were made by
later readers of the Roll. Various marks and indicators inserted by them are
also ignored (such as a palm with extended index finger).
A unique number was appended by us to every entry in square brackets at
the end. The number is composed of the year of the rectorial term (semester)
and the consecutive number of the matriculation within that semester. The
summer semester is marked by the letter
e (aestivalis,
estivalis),
the winter
one by the letter
h
(hiemalis). Thus for example the number
151
Oe/050 indi¬
cates the fiftieth entry in the summer semester of
1510.
It must be remem¬
bered that students matriculated during a large part of the winter semester
-
here represented as e.g.
1511h-
were actually enrolled in the next calendar
year (in this case
1512).
Every rectorial term opens with a heading. It is preceded by the name
of the term (e.g. V
rectorate
of Matthew of
Miechów).
The headings also
The Roll of Students of the University of Cracow LI
include basic information: manuscript pages on which the entries from the
term in question appear, data about the structure of the entries and scribal
hands
-
especially whether they were written by one or by several hands
and if they can be identified with the hands active in other semesters (it was
particularly important to compare them with entries from other semesters
of the same rector). The difficulties involved in identifying scribes were
discussed above.
Comparison with the old edition is ensured by the concordance of entry
numbers in our edition and page numbers in the Album of Adam
Chmiel.
We also attempt to identify precisely all variations of our readings and those
of the Album (universally used by historians for over
100
years). Smaller
differences are marked with an asterisk
(*).
More serious discrepancies are
supplied with proper footnotes, quoting the Album readings. We do not
mark, however, trivial inconsistencies of spelling such as
y
instead of ii or
Johannes instead of Joannes.
The indexes are an integral part of our edition. They include: Index A,
listing students by the place of origin; Index B, grouping them by first names;
Index C, with names of offices and dignities listed along the names of the
students; finally Index D, listing persons from initial notes, rectors named in
headings, as well as other persons mentioned in matriculation entries who
were not students. Index A is supplemented with a list of dioceses which is
important because of a much greater number of notes on diocesan affiliations
and problems of interpretation connected with them, as already mentioned
above. Detailed principles on which the indexes were prepared and guidelines
for using them are contained in the introductions preceding them.
