SUMMARY
The Prokhorovka burial ground has been studied for almost a century. The kurgans were
excavated at least four times at the beginning of the 20th century. They were firstly robbed by the
local peasants, and later excavation was carried out by the member of Orenburg Scientific Archive
Commission. After that the site was robbed again by local peasants and excavated by the expedition
headed by archaeologist S.I. Rudenko. After he left the site, the same local peasants dug some mounds
which S. Rudenko had not studied. The central burial place in the kurgan
β 1
was completely
plundered. After those excavations the kurgans had been constantly plowed that led to the irreversible
damage of the mounds. According to Rudenko, the height of the mounds reached
1.5
m
in
1916.
Meanwhile, it hardly reached
30
cm above the nowadays day surface in
2003.
In
1928
Orenburg lost its status of the capital of the Kyrgyz Socialist Republic and was forced
to hand over its collections to the newly established Kazakh Socialist Republic. The division of
displays took place, and collections from Orenburg museum were used to form the base of the Kazakh
Republican Museum. The archaeological collection from Prokhorovka was also divided between the
two museums. But the so-called Bowl of Atromitr was the only find which was officially transferred
to the Kazakh museum. It turned out that after the partition the Orenburg museum lost a neck-ring
with zoomorphic ends and a golden facing of the dagger from the central burial place of the kurgan
no.
1.
Only the pasteboard base was kept safe with fragments of sheath and the handle of the dagger
fixed on it (a fragment of the golden foil was glued to the cardboard). So, the collection of finds from
Prokhorovka kurgans was divided for good and all.
Thus, some finds from Prokhorovka were lost and moreover it is doubtful whether S. Rudenko
and M. Rostovtsev managed to determine exactly which kurgan did every find came from.
So the Prokhorovka kurgans
—
one of the most significant sites for the Russian Sarmatian
archaeology
—
have become an object of scientific and amateurish speculations. Most of them have
been aimed at unjustified revision of basic knowledge in the field of Sarmatian archaeology as a whole
(for more on that see bibliography to numerous studies by V. Zuyev devoted to the formation of the
Prokhorovka culture and the burial ground near the Prokhorovka village).
It was only in
2003
when archaeological expedition of the Institute of archaeology,
RAS
(supported by the Russian Humantirian Scientific Foundation) headed by L.T. Yablonsky was organized
to complete the exploration of the Prokhorovka kurgans. The expedition managed to fully excavate
the kurgans and the so-called hillfort where burials dated to the early Sarmatian time (4th-3rd
ее. ВС)
were also found. Three burial places (two of them were not plundered) and a sacrificial set (sculls of
horses and iron bits were unexpectedly discovered there.
In the kurgan no.
1
seven additional burial places situated around the central one were found
and investigated for the first time. Most of them contained goods which allowed to date them.
Six additional burial places giving different goods were also found for the first time in the
Kurgan no.
2.
The central burial place from the kurgan no.

(excavated by the S.I. Rudenko in
1916)
and two
additional burial places were studied once again by the expedition headed by D. Meshcheryakov.
Apart from the central burial place in the Kurgan no.
4
(also studied by Rudenko), two
additional ones were discovered.

Russian letters was used here to note the kurgan numbers after S. Rudenko (Rostovtzev,
1918).

SUMMARY
Eleven burials of the Early Sarmatian time were found under the mound of kurgan
6
which
was not excavated by Rudenko s expedition.
Two burials also belonging to the Early Sarmatian time were found in the kurgan
β
besides the
central burial place plundered by peasants.
Thus, thirty six burial places related to the Early Sarmatian culture of the Pre-Ural South area
were studied altogether in the burial ground.
Kurgan A (the biggest in the group) where the XIX-XX cc. cemetery is situated remains
unexplored.
In this book it was managed for the first time in the history of the Sarmatian archaeology to
unite all the finds from the burial ground (those made at the beginning of the 20th century and the
beginning of the 21stcentrury) in one catalogue. This gives a scope for new studies of the burial place
as a whole and unites efforts made by several generations of Russian archaeologists and historians who
reconstructed the formation processes of the early Sarmatian culture.
The excavations carried out at the beginning of the 21st century have given an opportunity to
review the chronology and periodization of the Prokhorovka burial ground kurgans. Firstly, a thorough
chronological examination of the old collection from Prokhorovka was carried out taking into account
the new material. Secondly, those new and large in number collections underwent chronological
and typological analyses. Thirdly, apart from the archaeological data, the new information on
paleoanthropology, paleozoology and geology of the burial place was acquired. Those independent
from archaeology sources are of great significance for reconstruction of ethnogeny of the early nomads
of the South Pre-Ural area and environment they lived in.
The imported finds (a silver bowl,
fiais
with inscriptions and an onyx vessel) are very important
for the dating of the site. They were thoroughly studied by specialists, which allowed not only to specify
the chronology of the Prokhorovka kurgans, but also to extend the conclusions made on some other
sites of the early Sarmatian culture. So, according to A. Balakhvantsev, a goblet found in the kurgan
Б
dates back to the middle
—
third quarter of the IV century
ВС.
Meanwhile, the independent study
made by M. Treysler says it may date back to the second half of the 4th century
ВС.
The previously debated date of the inscriptions from silver
fiais
coming from the kurgan no.
1
was also determined exactly. A. Balakhvantsev managed to establish that linguistic or
paléographie
features of Prokhorovka inscriptions allow to date them to the last third of the 4th-3rd cc.
ВС.
This
dating (in contrast to the one suggested earlier by V. Livshitz and V. Zuyev) does not contradict to the
general dating of the burial place and even confirms it.
As a result of the complex studies carried out, it was determined that the Prokhorovka kurgans
form a relatively homogenious group in terms of culture and chronology, and date back to the second
half of the 4th
с. ВС
(probably, border of the 4th-3rd cc.)
-
first half of the 2rd
с. ВС.
Kurgans no.
1
and
2
of the southern (V. Zuyev s term) group of the burial ground were
constructed simultaneously with those of the northern (V. Zuyev s term) including the kurgan
Б
( hillfort ) and form a common cultural and chronological complex dated back to
4
-3rd cc.
ВС
with
no chronological hiatus between them.
The Prokhorovka
1
burial place is a unique site because it reflects all major points of the
development of the Early Sarmatian culture which was named after it.
Thus, the majority of the Prokhorovka burial places date back to the end of the 4th-3rf cc.
ВС.
It is those burial places along with some other archaeological sites (Perevolochany, Berdyanka, Starye
Kiishki, Pokrovsky and Bishunkarovsky burial grounds) that give us the evidence of the continuous
development of the early Sarmatian culture of the South Pre-Ural area in the 4th-2rd cc.
ВС.
As far as typological and chronological terms are concerned, the Prokhorovsky burial ground
reflects the direct development of the material and spiritual culture traditions of the early nomads who lived
in the South Pre-Ural area. Those traditions were laid at the times when the Philippovsky burial ground was
still used as a cemetery by the nomads. The upper dates of the Philippovsky and Perevolochansky burial
grounds and the lower date of the Prokhorovsky almost cover each other but for rather a short period
which is obviously the third quarter of the 4th
с. ВС.
There is no chronological hiatus between these sites,
and this fact proves the continuity of the development of the early Sarmatian culture from the 4th to the 2rf
cc.
ВС,
as believed by M.I. Rostovtsev, B.N. Grakov, K.F. Smirnov and historians from his scientific school.
We will most probably never manage to determine the date of the Kurgan no. A , occupied by
a modern cemetery at the moment. But some of its features like the size and the form of the mound
363
nPOXOPOBKA:
У ИСТОКОВ САРМАТСКОЙ АРХЕОЛОГИИ
as well as absence of any signs of a ditch
-
resemble the kurgans of the South Pre-Ural area of the
Sauromatic epoch and some of the Philippovka kurgans. The mounds of such great height were not
erected in the Orenburg steppe in the epoch of the developed Early Sarmatian culture. And this feature
also unites the Prokhorovka kurgans with the sites from steppe South Pre-Ural area which date back to
the initial epoch of the Sarmatian culture formation.
Any attempts to use the material coming from Prokhorovka aimed at revising traditional
periodization and chronology concepts of the Sarmatian culture are absolutely groundless, unreasoned
and adventurist. These attempts are beneath criticism from the point of view of the whole aggregate of
archaeological evidence.
In particular, the technological studies of the moulded ceramics from the Prokhorovka burial
ground have proved the continuity in the traditions of its making during the 4th-2rd
ее. ВС.
That means
that the people who lived there at this time had their own traditions of pottery manufacture which they
inherited from their ancestors and imparted to their descendants.
The study of osteological materials from the burial place (made by I. Roslyakova) has proved
that different animals were used in the burial ceremonies. These are sheep, horses, cattle, fox, corsac,
hare and some birds also. Sheep were most frequently used, and all the animals were aged about three
and a half years. There were bones of very young animals aged about three to six months. Only one
animal was more than three and a half years old. Horses were used more rarely and there were isolated
instances of using cattle. Three horses sculps and one cow s sculp were found in the pit of the burial

represents a special ritual set.
The geological study of the Prokhorovka collection (made by O.V. Anikeeva) proves that stone
material from the burial ground was partly of local origin and partly imported from other regions.
Some finds originate from the North Caucasus, Trans Caucasus, Western Ukraine, Iran and India.
Some types of the beads resemble those find in Greek colonies of the North Black sea area.
The sculls from Prokhorovka are similar to craniological material of Sauromatian and Early
Sarmation
epoch originated from the Volga-Ural region. The specific centre of some race s formation
was most probably located in the Volga-Ural region in the early Iron Age. One should note the
craniological polymorphism of the local nomadic population of this region. This polymorphism results
from multiple migrations and anthropological diffusions under the nomadic life-style conditions.
The physical type of the early nomads was based on the complex of the signs including:
brachycranic head, low face, contemporary wide face, and mainly europeoid (causoid) construction
of the face skeleton. Those nomads represent a specific
anthropologie
formation located in the
South Ural area. This anthropological type doesn t have similar analogies neither in East-European
steppe, nor in eastern (Trans-Baikal) area where Europeoid admixture is hardly visible. One can t find
analogies in the Caucasus or in South Middle Asia where the mediterranian and pamiro-pherganian
types most widely-spread at that period. This anthropological formation could be named ancient
eastern europeoids , and it is quite possible that representatives of the Ural race were included in it.
The material from Prokhorovka is of high significance for specifying periodization of culture
peculiar to early nomads in the South Preural area.
According to the concept suggested by
A.D.
Tairov, which I share in general, it was the nomadic
community located in the South
Pre-
and Trans-Ural area that constituted a community where the
formation of the Early Sarmatian (Prokhorovka) culture took place beginning from the second half of
the 6th
с. ВС.
Pshenichnyuk who carried out excavations of the Perevolochansky burial ground situated
closely to the geographical boundary of Pre-Ural and South Trans-Ural areas rioted the features of the
funeral rite which are peculiar to the sites of the Sauromatic epoch on the one hand, and to the Early
Sarmation
on the other. He believed that this combination of features proves that Perevolochansky
burial ground is a site of the transitional type. That means it was formed at the time when the transition
from Sauromatian to Early Sarmatian culture occurred both in cultural and in chronological terms.
Pshenichnyuk also wrote that features of the funeral rite typical of the Prokhorovka culture
became apparent rather early in the Sauromatian sites. Among those features are: orientation of
the skeletons on the South, burial pits, side niches, round bottom pots with carved decoration. The
appearance of these features in the 6th-5th
ее. ВС
was explained by the fact that elements of the new
Early Sarmatian culture were formed in the depths of the old Sauromatian one. According to this
364
SUMMARY
point of view the Early Sarmatian features were laid since the very beginning of the formation of the
Sauromatian culture. Materials from recent excavations make more and more scientists believe that
the Early Sarmatian (Prkhorovsky) stage in the culture of early nomads from South Ural should be
dated back not to the 4th, but at least to the 5th and may be to the end of the 6th century
ВС.
So, if we
presume that the Early Sarmatian culture was formed in such an ancient period, it becomes obvious
that sites of the Sauromatian culture had no chronological space in the region.
Pshenichnyuk comes to the following conclusion: From what was said above we can infer that it
is quite reasonable to regard the Sauromatian and Early
Sarmation
sites of the South Ural region (end
of the 6th-3rd
ее. ВС)
as a common culture of the early nomads. That s particularly because none of the
scientists deny the genetic cognation of the population which left Sauromatian and Prokhorovka
sites .
Some burial places of the Lebedevsky burial ground have been recently referred to the Early
Prokhorovka (the end of the
б М 1 с. ВС)
period.
Thus, sites like Filippovka, the Perevolochansky burial ground and Prokhorovka-1 represent
an indissoluble chain in cultural and typological terms. In this range Prokhorovka has an upper
chronological position while belonging to the classical early Sarmatian period (for more on that see:
Zhelezchikov and others,
2006.
P.
44)
or to the
С
-D
stages of the development of the early
Sarmation
culture according to the periodization suggested by A. Tairov
(2004.
P.
3).
