RRCH-NON-HUMRN:

Summary
The problems discussed in the book Arcy-nieludzkie:
przez
science fiction do
antropologii
cyborgów
[Arch-non-human: from science fiction to the anthropology of cyborgs]
concerns the process of cyborgisation of man in various variants and on different
levels. The main issue of the work is to formulate the range of anthropology of
cyborgs which becomes a contribution to the study of a wider problem that is a
question about the condition and chances of the development of modern man enter¬
ing with all the intensity the postbiological epoch. Anthropology of the cyborgs
brings out onto the light of day arguments for the interdependence of that which is
objective and that which is subjective. In such an interpretation science and techno¬
logy shocks modern humans since we model ourselves in this relational set up, and
not because it is some process that has been externally enforced. To put it in other
words, inventions of modern civilisation such as airplanes, telephones and compu¬
ters are tools by means of which we build relations with other people and the world,
but at the same time, we set up the character and intensity of these relations through
technology. If we take into consideration that what is meant are no longer objects
which are beyond us (at least physically), but is the interference of technology into
corporality
-
bionics can be an example
-
then the formulation anthropology
of cyborgs obtains a meaning. What should be done is to look at a cyborg as at
a new version of human being
-
a version which uses technology and is emerged in
technology.
Through the study of the figure of cyborg and of other equally ambiguous fig¬
ures such as hybrids, live dead bodies, intelligent robots, self-conscious dolls, who
appear in the science fiction literature, but also in other areas of pop culture, we can
indicate characteristic features of modern culture which is to a greater and greater
degree shaped by the technological potential. The issue of the position of technology
in modern culture and of its role in the shaping of the view of the world read by
individuals and social groups does not only mean man s involvement in technology
but also people s dependence on technology. It should be added that these depend¬
ences and human-technical transformations are often inspired by man s yearning for
perfection, immortality and the wish to create life beyond the order
ornature
and/or
316
God s will, which accompanies human beings since their dawn. Thus in this work is
presented the cultural and contextual complexity of the figure of cyborg, or rather
man s relation to technology and hopes and fears which are hidden behind them.
The book consists of two parts. The part titled
Rozpoznanie sceny
[Recogni¬
tion of the scene] is a theoretical introduction to the the main criterion of choice of
actors taking part in the anthropology of cyborgs: outlining of the research area,
methodology and literary space of analyses of the character of the cyborg. The au¬
thor also brought closer to the readers the history of functioning of the character of
the cyborg in postmodern culture since the moment the idea of cybernetic organism
appeared in the area of the sciences through the travesty of science fiction until this
hero had been adapted by various theories of post-humanism. In the second part of
the book, which is titled
Bohaterowie
[Heroes], attention is focused on the figures
from the science fiction writings who play a considerable role in discussions on the
relationship of man and technology. The main criterion of the choice of actors taking
part in performances of anthropology of cyborgs is neither the time nor the space of
culture in which these characters began to exist for the first time, but their reactiva¬
tion in various discourses of post-humanism, usefulness in analysing dilemmas con¬
nected with the obliteration of boundaries between that which is natural and that
which is artificial. That is why in the book along with robots, androids, bodiless
avatars, inhabitants of other planets
-
heroes of the 20th century science fiction
-
are
also referred to heroes of Greek myths, Jewish Cabbala, mechanical toys, manne¬
quins, hybrids and chimeras as well as werewolves and zombies.
