(Summary)
The problem of the economy of the eastern Bulgarian state
—
Volga Bulgaria
—
has not been a topic of special scientific investigations.
Therefore this book is the first special study in the field.
In the first chapter the history of Volga Bulgaria is briefly described.
On the basis of relevant historical sources the conclusion is made that
to the beginning of the 13th century that country was afmost unknown in
the West and soon after its occupation by the Mongolian hordes it was
totally forgotten for many centuries.
Therefore when in the

8th century some Western scholars made the
first attempts to reveal the origin of the Volga Bulgarians, they defined
them as barbaric people identical by its way of life with the Mongols and
Tartars and very primitive from the economical point of view. It was very
difficult at that time to study both the origin and the economic life of
the Volga Bulgarians, and for this reason their description as a primitive
and obsolete people has prevailed to the end of the 20th
c.
Bearing this
in mind, in chapter
2
of the study were collected all the relevant sources
of information about the economy of the Volga Bulgaria with special
attention on the historical sources and the archeological sources as well.
On the bases of this large quantity of information it became pos¬
sible to study a broad scope of many difierent economic activities of the
Volga Bulgarians. Theis specific characteristics are described in chapters
3
and
4.
In chapter
3
all the material economic activities of that country
are studied. The information shows that in contrast to the conventional
opinions of the primitive mode of life of the Volga Bulgarians the
recently discovered new historical and archeological sources reveal a very
different situation. One of the most developed and early activities was
agriculture. And the second very important activity was the construction
which attested itself in the creation of many towns and fortresses even
during the earliest period of the existence of Volga Bulgaria. The animal-
breeding was very developed as well, but in the early centuries it differed
substantially from the nomadic breeding and only after the invasion of
the Tartars and Mongols the typical nomadic horse-breeding occurred

in Volga Bulgaria. In chapter
4
the nonmaterial activities of that early
country are investigated. The most essential in this connection is the very
fast and spectacular developing of the trade and the early creation of the
specific monetary system.
The historical and archeological sources show that Volga Bulgaria
began to issue its own silver money in
908,
many decades before
Russia and Sweden which is an obvious result of the high level of its
economic development in the earliest period of her history. The complex
information shows that Volga Bulgaria took economically the first place
among the countries of North-Eastern Europe in the period from 8th to
10th century and this is the most important conclusion of this special
study. On the basis of analysis of this the conclusion is made in chapter
5
that the early Volga Bulgarians settled in Eastern Europe not as primitive
nomadic tribes, but as a people, bearing the achievements of the early
civilizations and therefore they completed the role of one of the first
civilizers of the eastern part of the European continent.
To his special role of the early inhabitants of Vogla Bulgaria and
to the specific origin of their early economic culture chapters

and
6
are assigned. Through many newly discovered facts the conclusion is
made that the economic culture of Volga Bulgaria as of the Danube
Bulgaria as well, has its long history which began many centuries before
the migrations of the Protobulgarians to Caucasus, Volga and Danube.
The study of this early history is the most important topic which appears
after the study of Volga Bulgaria.
