THE SOCIAL COMMUNICATION BETWEEN
BULGARIANS, TURKS AND ROMA
(Cognitive Aspects)
During the last decades, similarly to other ethnically
heterogeneous countries of Europe, serious social changes have
taken place in our country, changes which have stimulated increased
scientific and public interest in the problems of communication and
interaction between ethnic groups in Bulgaria; this enhanced attention
to the topic opens new possibilities for elaborating explicatory models
on the nature of interethnic contacts. In this book, an attempt is
made to deduce communication models characteristic for the three
main, largest ethnic communities in Bulgaria: Bulgarians, Turks,
and Roma. The choice of these three ethnic communities has been
determined by the fact that, in the specific Bulgarian configuration
of ethnic mutual relationships, the relationships between these three
groups are the most problematic ones, and, moreover, the specifics of
the present-day social and political situation in Bulgaria determines
their decisive importance for maintaining ethnic peace.
The problems of social communication between ethnic groups
have been studied in the book in the context of the cognitive
perspectives of communication; by cognitive perspectives we mean
the dynamics of ethnic tolerance whereby the cognitive elements of
interethnic communication are activated. Communication would be
impossible without the mutual perception and cognition, without the
knowledge people have of one another. That is why the study of the
cognitive perspectives of interethnic communication has been carried
out through a study of the system of ethno-social representations

that the ethnic groups have of one another, ranging from positive
images to negative prejudices. The author argues that the complexj
and multi-factor nature of the correlation between ethno-social
representations and inter-ethnic communication requires that it;
be explained and prognosticated by means of integral theoretical;
models. In connection with this, the hypotheses is demonstrated
that tolerance or lack of tolerance can appear with various degrees
of intensity, and that different models of interethnic communication I
could hence be deduced, models comporting various degrees of
interethnic tolerance and, respectively, situated at different distances
from the positive model of tolerant interethnic communication of
the norm type, which is associated with the correlation, in the
structure of ethnic representations, of a positive image of one s own
ethnic group and a positive image of other ethnic groups.
In working out the model of interethnic communication and
tracing the paths for achieving ethnic tolerance, the author has used
the heuristic potential and the experience of cognitivism, especially
those of its theories known as consistency theories, which try to
explain social behaviour by studying human cognitive processes
and which develop the idea, differently presented in the separate
theories, that a particularly important human need is to maintain
consistency in the individual s cognitive structure, which, carried
into the sphere of inter-group relationships, implies the need for
affirming the balance of relations as an optimal, comfortable way
of existence for the group.
The study of the cognitive aspects of interethnic communication
and the testing of the basic principles of the model of tolerant
interethnic communication presented in the book is based on an
empirical sociological survey conducted in a concrete interaction
situation between the Bulgarian, Turkish, and Roma ethnic community
in our country. The author also holds that, in multi-ethnic societies,
where historically shaped representations, stereotypes, and prejudices
undoubtedly channel the communication processes between ethnic
groups, the direct contact situation and the conditions in which
contact takes place, also have an impact on the emerging models of
interethnic communication. In this connection, the object of study of

the survey were the selected interethnic relations and communication
in a small Bulgarian city of mixed population, the city of Vetovo,
in the province of Ruse. The choice of such a small city of mixed
population was based on the consideration that in such a place the
sustained mechanisms of coexistence, worked out in the course of
centuries, are particularly distinct, whereas they can ever less often
be observed in the large cities, where equally distinct transformation
processes are also affecting much of the forms of traditional culture.
In the study, both quantitative and qualitative research methods were
used. In all,

persons were encompassed through qualitative
methods, of whom

were Bulgarians,

Turks, and

Roma;

persons were studied through qualitative methods.
As a result of the survey, communication models were
delineated, characteristic for the Bulgarian, Turkish, and Roma
ethnic communities in Vetovo. The conclusion is that tolerance
towards the other ethnos exists above all in the everyday world of good
neighbourly relations in the small city. In the context of immediate
communication, this attitude is a fundamental characteristic of
mutual relations between the three ethnic communities in Vetovo.
The good attitude towards the neighbour belonging to the other
ethnicity becomes a basis for the formation of interethnic tolerance
in general. In most cases, the different ethnic groups manage to
achieve a compromise between one another and to perceive the
others and the different as people with specific traits and distinctive
features, not as alien or hostile. In this sense, the model of interethnic
communication formed in Vetovo as a small city of mixed population
is an open model, a continuation of the best Bulgarian traditions of
interethnic communication; however, this model bears the marks of
the social context in which communication is effectuated.
