Modeling Our World is all about understanding the
geodatabase,
the collection of
datasets
that
make a geographic information system
(GIS)
work. The book describes the key data modeling
concepts of ArcGIS®, a software product from ESRI® that is used for creating and applying
geographic information systems.
To apply ArcGIS to its fullest, it s important to understand the fundamental concepts of the
geodatabase.
GIS data
is organized as thematic layers that model real-world entities and
are overlaid on a map. The data for these thematic layers is stored in the
geodatabase
as a
collection of geographic
datasets.
Throughout this book, you will learn about the various
geographic
datasets
that provide a rich foundation for modeling attributes, spatial and
temporal relationships, imagery and terrain, editing transactions, and many display and analysis
techniques. When you design and build geodatabases, you ll find many options for structuring
geographic information. So that you can be successful in designing
a geodatabase
for your
organization, the goals of this book are to explain the following:

How to use coordinate systems to align geographic
datasets
from many sources on a map.

How to use rules and data properties in the
geodatabase
to ensure spatial and attribute
integrity when making edits to your geographic data.

How to work with location data such as addresses to find places on a map; add surface data
and imagery as basemaps and to perform powerful spatial analysis; and study changes to
your geographic data through time.

datasets
using scripts, models,

geoprocessing

geodatabase
structural elements like networks and topologies for modeling
systems such as road networks, streams and watersheds, land parcels, and electrical grids.

spanning many editors and departments across an organization.
