Century
INTRODUCTION
It had been long and repeatedly paid attention to the fact that in the
historical sources Varna is among the most often mentioned names, a
reference to which is made either in the meaning of a settlement, a city,
a stronghold, a harbor, or a river. We come across the name of Varna in
chronicles, commercial and clerical documents, records about landmark
events from the mediaeval history of the Bulgarian state and the BLack
Seacoast in particular. One of the major conditions defining the interest
of both ancient and contemporary authors is the geographical disposition
of the town and its adjoining region. It is situated in the easternmost part
from the territory of
Danubian
Bulgaria, whose environs were reached
during the crucial for the proto-Bulgarians battle at the Ongal, after which
were laid the foundations of the new state. The weather peculiarities of
the moderate-continental climate distinctive for the Varna region represent
an exclusively favorable component for the development of the prevalent
for the time livelihoods like agriculture and stock-breeding. A basic
strategic significance to no lesser degree had the Bulgarian conquest and
domination over the region. It was cut across by the ancient seaside road
and the passing through it deviation to the west, diverging to the cities of
Moesia Superior and Moesia Inferior and connecting it with some of the
most accessible passes of the Eastern Balkan Mountains. Throughout the
period of the Middle Ages the Varna coastal area used to be linked directly
with the capitals of the First and Second Bulgarian Kingdoms
-
Pliska
and
Presláv
the Great
(Velicki Presláv),
and later with Czarevgrad Tarnov/
Tarnovgrad by the starting from the Black Sea shore highway. Due to this
reason the Varna region and the west-spreading territory reaching as far
as the antique Marcianopolis, i. e. the mediaeval Diavenna-Devnya, was
one of the most densely populated areas within the boundaries of the First
Bulgarian Kingdom. To all probability close to Varna had been formed one
of the original nuclei of the newly constituted Bulgarian state with location
round the Lower Danube. After the reinstatement of the Byzantine authority

shape and ambiance over the ruins of the old city modern inhabitance and

In the book have been traced the more important events related to the
Varna region in the pointed period, in parallel with a profound analysis
of the already expressed theses and stated about them opinions. The book
has been premeditated as a narration about the history and archaeology
of Varna and its adjoining region attended by a simultaneous attempt at
critical scrutiny of previously existing and newly arising notions referring
to its evolution, the alternating shifts in the sea and lake shorelines and all
changes that have taken place throughout the ages. The lack of knowledge
about these occurrences sometime results in their misinterpretation leading
to some serious errors aggravated aggravating the formulation of new
concepts having direct impact on the field of history and archaeology.
Chronologically the book „Varna in the Middle Ages I spans a period from
the first invasions of the „barbarians , the stage-by-stage destruction of the
Byzantine military, administrative, economical and clerical system along
the Black Seacoast, the downfall and perishing of Odessos, including the
so-called Varna as an integrated part of
Danubian
Bulgaria, till the seconda¬
ry subjection of the region by Byzantium in the year
1000.
A description
of the peculiar for the region fortification system has been rendered in
parallel with a presentation of various (and often diverse) viewpoints on a
number of controversial issues and disputable moments from the history
and archaeology of Varna and its contiguous areas.
The book ends with the layout of two propositions. The first is aimed at
more extensive presentation of the physico-geographical and geologico-
geomorphological particulars of the Varna Bay and Lakes, with a especial
emphasis on the changes they have been subjected to and the shifts that have
been occurring in the course of the centuries. The second proposition is
associated with the collection of possibly greater part of the known sources,
containing geographical descriptions, historical records and narratives
about significant events, trade and commercial documents, church and
clerical registers, and all archives related to the late-antique Odessos and
Varna, its successor

Varna which was built upon its foundations, and
unfortunately, upon the poorly preserved ruins of its material legacy.
