ABSTRACT

Abstract.
Regional
identity implies a set of attitudes towards the concept of
minor homeland . Regional identity is defined as ability and will to
live in and to develop the territory (including both local and regional
levels of minor homeland ). The author argues against a notion
that traditional and may by modern Russian folk and urban culture
а
-spatial (that means the absence of local patriotism and regional
cultural contrasts). The theoretical and the methodological aspects of
the
а
-spatial problem are under discussion in the book. The author
describes the phenomenon of regional identity and suggests a system
of indices. The system is tested in the respective polls and interviews.
Spatially changeable patterns of the role of traditions are found to
shape regional identities of Russians. Regional identity, being the result
of interaction between mobility and rootedness, is one of the driving
forces of Russian society, ensuring its capacity for modernization.
Mobility that destroys rootedness cannot be regarded as progressive.
The thesis of local patriotism as a source of different forms of
social activity is illustrated by the case of support of the local green
movements given by the inhabitants of towns and cities as a variety
of a local community and the environmental solidarity. The green
movements constitute a crucial subject of contemporary Russian
modernization. Using the criterion of the ratio between proponents
and opponents of local green movements, macroregions that can
be interpreted as various civilizations we identified (Russia, Belarus,
Ukraine

Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia

The local
patriotism intensifies environmental trends mostly in medium size
towns that have a historical and cultural individuality.
The author has substantiated the existence of the cultural trinity of
regional identity, i.e., the autonomous aspects of regional identity that
characterize society4

attitude towards tradition in the different ways.

stomach is full (the author do not consider these sayings-
indicators mutually exclusive). Traditionalist regional identity
includes the characteristics subethnicity (measured by answers to the
questions Do you agree with the statement: One should do everything
possible to preserve the local differences in dialects, behavior, nutrition,
etc? ) and off-economic thinking. The aspects of regional identity
demonstrate a significant positive relationship with a number of social
and economic indicators.
Despite the globalization process, the active migration of
population inside Russia, and the artificial leveling of cultural specific
features in the Russian regions during the period of the USSR, Russian
urban culture has not lost its individual features. The core of local
communities is made up of people that identify themselves as local
by birth or by conviction, for whom their minor homeland is highly
important. The total share of locals by birth and by conviction
is approximately similar in all the regions under study: from
81%
in
Kostroma
oblast
to
84%
in Yaroslavl
oblast.
For the locals by birth, it
also changes insignificantly: from
48.7%
in Voronezh
oblast
to
54.7%
in Vologda
oblast.
Among the respondents dominates a negative attitude towards the
image of their towns as symbols of an out-of-the way place. Experts have
formulated positive and negative features of their minor homeland as
a base for their positive and negative self-identification. They put into
words their sense of local patriotism. Within the frame work of regional
identity, of interest is the town residents self evaluation of what they
consider their most significant traits of character and lifestyle, which is
often ironical or even negative. The cultural folk meaning of the regions
in European Russia is clear according to Tambov Wolf symbol.
The approximately similar share of those surveyed on the
territories where we conducted our research experience pressure
and competition on the part of other territories,
11-13%.
Practically
everywhere dominates the opinion on the pressure on the part of
Moscow, excluding Kostroma and Tutaev, where respondents more

often point to competition with Yaroslavl. In Tambov there is a
widespread opinion on the pressure on the part of Moscow, as well as
Lipetsk.
Regional identity is a relatively autonomous cultural phenomenon
with its own inner logic that does not depend directly on the level of
socioeconomic development of a territory, yet tied to it with thousands
of strings. One does not observe a direct relationship between regional
identity and individual characteristics, such as education level and
age. Regional identity is indifferent even to the social and cultural
potential of the town and city. Despite autonomy and stability regional
identity can transform under the influence of social and cultural stress
( neighborhood stress ) or radical change in the material environment
and social atmosphere. However, stability is a specific feature of
regional identity; therefore, it should generally by regarded as a poorly
controlled phenomenon.
Within the framework of regional identity, Russian society does
not demonstrate any signs of breakdown into univocal adherents of
tradition or, on the contrary, modernization. On the contrary, from
the standpoint of regional identity, it is becoming apparent that
it is impossible to draw a strict opposition between tradition and
modernization, which to be rather closely intertwined. Depending
on local conditions, traditions may prove both a resource for and a
handicap to modernization.
The regional identity phenomenon testifies to rootedness in the
consciousness of the modern generation of the Russian population
of regional entities that were formed in European Russia. From the
standpoint of population, the historical grounding of the regions is
significantly higher that follows from the historical and geographical
materials. Nevertheless, considerable part of the population of
Michurinsk, Kostroma, Novomoskovsk, and Aleksin would like
tojóin
neighboring regions (i.e. to move the bounderies of regions). There is
a tendency to restore the once existing
Balashov
oblast.
The research results convince of the correctness of the image
of European Russia that takes its origin from N.I. Kostomarov (on
considerable territorial differences in world outlooks and lifestyles

of Russians), as opposed to the most popular in Russia and abroad
views of M.P. Pogodin and S.M. Solov4ev on the European Russia and
Russians cultural homogeneity and weakness of local patriotism.
