SUMMARY
The presence of the Croatian inhabitants in Bosnia and
Hercegovina
is noted already in 7th century. In
1463,
the Kingdom of
Bosnia fell to the Ottoman Empire, remaining under Turkish rule for
400
years, until
1878.
During this period, priestly duties in Bosnia-
Herzegovina were chiefly performed by Franciscan fathers, and there
were also secular priests. They lived, died and endured Turkish perse¬
cution together with the rest of the Catholic population.
In
1878,
Austria-Hungary took control of Bosnia-Herzegovina
and established rule. In
1881,
Pope Leo
XIII
established a regular
Church hierarchy in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The first archbishop of
Sarajevo was
Josip
Stadler,
a priest from Zagreb. In
1882,
Archbishop
Stadler
invited the Congregation of Daughters of Divine Charity to
come to Bosnia from Vienna and help educate Catholic youth, espe¬
cially girls. Archbishop
Stadler
wanted to establish religious orders of
women, for whom there had been no place during the Turkish regime.
The Mother
Franziska Lechner,
foundress of the Congregation,
opened schools with various branches in Sarajevo and
Tuzla.
From
1882
to
1945,
the Congregation of the Daughters of Divine Charity
greatly contributed to the education of the people of Bosnia, espe¬
cially in the training of women teachers.
In
1911,
the nuns opened a convent in Pale near Sarajevo, fol¬
lowed by an elementary school
(1912-1918).
With the establishment
of the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in
1918,
the sisters
educational activities in Pale ended but their apostolic activity con¬
tinued among the multinational and multiconfessional population:
Catholics, Orthodox, Muslims and others. Under the convent roof, the
sisters received the sick for rehabilitation as well as school children
and nuns on summer and winter excursions. The sisters particularly
devoted themselves impartially to all the local people requiring medi¬
cal assistance, the helpless, the lonely and poor families.
In
1941,
the Kingdom of Yugoslavia disintegrated politically and
militarily. Political and military conflicts erupted and then war broke

out, in which various armies, domestic and foreign, participated. All
these military formations fought on the territory of Bosnia-
Herzegovina.
In December
1941,
Serbian Chetniks
( četa
means troop and
thus the term Chetniks )
,
with the support of the Italian army, gained
control of part of eastern Bosnia. On December
11,1941,
Chetniks at¬
tacked Pale, surrounded the convent of the Daughter
s
of Divine Char¬
ity and captured five sisters: Sister Berchmana
Leidenix (76,
Austrian),
Sister Krizina
Bojane
(56,
Slovenian), Sister
Jula
Ivanisevic
(48,
Croatian), Sister AntonijaFabjan
(36,
Slovenian) and Sister Bernadeta
Banja
(29,
Croatian Hungarian) together with Msgr. Ksaver
Meško
(Slovenian)

The Chetniks set the convent ablaze. The flimsily dressed
sisters, frozen, hungry and exhausted by fear, were then led by the
Chetniks through villages and forests for five days and nights, during
which time they were mistreated and threatened with death.
The Chetniks left Sister Berchmana, a nearly blind old woman
who could not keep up, in the village of Sjetlina. They freed the priest
Ksaver
Meško
and took the four remaining nuns to
Goražde
as pris¬
oners. In
Goražde,
the nuns were locked up on the
t
hird floor of a
military barrack on December
15, 1941.
That night, some Chetniks,
more drunk than sober, broke into the area where the nuns being held
with the intention of dishonoring them. In order to avoid being raped,
the sisters jumped out the third floor window. The Chetniks, furious
at being foiled, stabbed the sisters bodies repeatedly with knives and
threw them into the
Drina
River, fifty meters from the barrack. They
ordered a Catholic female prisoner, Angelina Genda, to fetch water
and pour it over their bloody hands and knives.
The bodies of the four dead nuns remained in the shallows of
the
Drina
River for several days. Catholic women wanted to bury them
but the Chetniks did not allow this. Instead, a Serbian grave digger
pushed the bodies down river with a stick. The bodies were carried
away by the water and the
Drina
River became their grave. After this
slaughter of nuns in
Goražde,
Chetniks also killed Sister Berchmana
in a forest near Sjetlina, probably on December
23.
The site of her grave
is unknown.

In
1941,
this slaughter of innocent nuns echoed as a heinous war
crime and continues to do so today. These sisters died a heroic death
for faith and the defense of their dignity as consecrated to God.
For fifty-five years, Catholic faithful have revered these nuns as
martyrs, referring to them as The
Drina
Martyrs. The anniversary of
their death has become increasingly significant. The voice of the holi¬
ness of these martyred nuns echoes ever farther and louder. God s
people believe that these five nuns, by virtue of their heroic virginal
love, merit the honor of the altar. Catholic believers, priests and nuns
pray for and support this.
This book, The Vow Signed in Blood, describes the faithfulness
to God and martyred love of the
Drina
Martyrs. The purpose of these
pages is to help initiate the process for their beatification.
