presoje
so
notranje povezane
z
vrednostno sodbo, ki ne zadeva
le
intuicije
in
razuma, temveč tuđi voljo. Različnost
dějstev,
okoliščin
in izkušenj
presojamo
z
vidika treh najvišjih načel: pravičnosti, racionalne naklonjenosti
in
svobodě.
Ta najvišja načela
so
izrecno ali posredno izražena
v vseh
moralnih kodeksih. Iz
te univerzalne zahteve sledi, da bi resnico, ki jo odkrivajo znanstveniki, filozofi
in teologi,
vsaj
načelno morala zaznati
vsa
racionalna bitja. To pričakovanje
zahteva,
da so
znanstvene
in
moralne razprave javne. Tako lahko ugotovimo,
da nasprotje med znanostjo
in vero,
med zahtevami objektivnosti
in avtono-
mije ne temelji
v
resničnosti
in
je torej
le
navidezno. Že sam formalni značaj
moralnosti zahteva, daje dojemanje etičnih razmerij univerzalno.
Abstract
The relationship between science, or knowledge, and belief has proved to be an
area of both tension and reconciliation from the earliest times. The reasons for
tension lie in differences in subjects, methods and aims of these primary fields
of human activity. Characteristic of the sciences is cognisance of facts, of philo¬
sophy general rationality, of art and religion evoking feelings and recommending
actions. The reason for reconciliation is in the incontestable evidence of the
orderliness of nature, as well as in human beings' striving for transcendence.
The inner connection between the outer and inner order of the universe enables
constructive cooperation and more complete knowledge according to the principle
of comparison and analogy. The issue of knowledge has often been related to the
question of the human mind and to the question of human will. The extension of
knowledge into the background of the world of appearance necessarily questions
the rationalistic explanation of knowledge and science that has adopted and been
working with an excessively stringent concept of certainty.
The evidence of the orderliness of nature and human beings' striving for tran¬
scendence are fully in line with the Judeo-Christian tenets of faith. It could
very plausibly be argued that these tenets were an important condition of the
development of modern science, since the belief in one God as ruler of the
universe implies that that God had arranged things in an orderly way and that

there are therefore laws

that can be discovered. These tenets explain
why monotheistic religions essentially involve theological ideas about God,
the world and humans in their causal relation and why the question of human
destiny stands in the very centre of every comprehensive theological perception
of truth. Though scientists, philosophers and theologians recognize that belief
must rest on evidence and on knowledge, the theories of belief vary between
the view that assent to the reasons for belief is a matter of will that can be fre¬
ely given or withheld, and the assumption that belief is a kind of feeling that
operates within us but beyond the control of our mind and will.
Our knowledge of the world begins with direct awareness of our experien¬
ce. This awareness is completed by use of logical principles lying outside the
world of facts. Logical necessity can be shown as absolute. The significance of
scientific investigation and of any human action goes beyond the natural facts
and our state of mind, beyond the imperatives of logical necessity, beyond the
variety of circumstances and beyond signifying language. When regarding
objects we allow them to express their essence, to speak from the background
of the whole world and from the necessity of ultimate principles. Objective
scientific considerations are intrinsically connected with a value judgement
that is not only matter of intuition and reason but also of will. Variety of facts,
circumstances and experiences is judged against the three ultimate principles,
which we may call the principles of justice, rational benevolence, and liberty.
These ultimate principles are found explicitly or implicitly in all moral codes.
From this demand of universality it follows that the truth claimed by scientists,
philosophers and theologians should be determinable at least in principle by
all rational beings. This requires that scientific and moral discourses should
be a form of public discourse, which may show that the conflict between sci¬
ence and belief, the demands of objectivity and autonomy is not a real but an
apparent one. The formal character of morality itself demands that perception
of ethical relationships must be universal.
