adam_text | Of Smiling Peace
By STEFAN HEYM
This dramatic novel, with its racing narrative, its
living people and the largeness of its truth, remains
in the reader s mind, as a living experience, long
after its last page has been turned.
Unlike the highly praised, best-selling hostages
which portrayed man s nobility in defeat, of smil¬
ing peace is a novel about the hazards of victory,
told in the human terms of liberators, liberated and
oppressors.
As a story it is an absorbing duel of wits and
force between resourceful Bert Wolff, American
Intelligence officer, and Major
Ludwig
von
Liszt,
highly placed German Staff officer. Caught up in
this duel
—
as bait or prize, no one knew which
—
is the beautiful, shrewd Marguerite Fresneau,
Liszt s mistress.
Between the dueling forces is the man Jules-
Marie Monaitre
—
the cynical betrayer-collabo¬
rator, the man of Vichy who thinks he can trade
masters as casually as mistresses. The Monaitres,
the Lis2ts made French North Africa a wilderness
of subtly hazardous intrigue. Colonel Wintring-
ham, Wolff s superior officer, found this jungle
more dangerous and tricky than a mine field.
Upon entering Algiers, Wolff is sent to arrest
the Nazi Armistice Commission that had been
legally looting the colony. One man is missing,
Liszt, of Franco s staff, whom Wolff knew by repu¬
tation during his days with the Loyalists in Spain.
Liszt is a Junker, contemptuous of Nazi party
hacks, with German superiority and destiny deeply
rooted in his blood and background. To Wolff
Liszt becomes the embodiment of the enemy, mar¬
tially and emotionally.
Deeply enmeshed in the subtle game are Saga-
mond, the anti-fascist French journalist, and Louis
Jerez,
the
agent. The amoral Jerez
understands
with mean-souled cunning that the fallacy of the
Great lies in their forgetting that the small men
too have desires, aims, plans. He bargains
—
with
an eye to money and Marguerite Fresneau
—
be¬
tween Americans, French and Germans with gran¬
diose impartiality. He becomes a player before
the Great know he is in the game.
Marguerite is a woman full of sin, and she
knows it; but she has discovered that the way to
independence lies in being many-faceted. When
introduced to Major
von
Liszt she wrote in her
journal, I know that there is a future in him
. . .
unfortunate that the political situation should enter
at all into my considerations
. . .
but then the Ger¬
mans are here to stay awhile. And then the Amer¬
icans arrived
—
arrived personally for her in the
person of Bert Wolff.
Of equal importance with the principle charac¬
ters in this novel are the soldiers of the American
army. Stefan Heym, like the author of A walk in
the sun, is a soldier himself and his portrayal of
the American fighting man is full of respect and
real understanding. There is Sergeant McManus,
who admires Wolff s ideas and Slotkin s courage;
Slotkin, who lives under the impression that Mc-
Manus s exploits are known to every man in the
U. S. Forces in North Africa; Pope, intelligent,
methodical corporal, and others who -will long be
remembered by the readers of this book.
The theme of OF smiling peace is a duel be¬
tween two conflicting views of the world, a gi¬
gantic gambit of war and politics. Its importance
is not confined to what happened on the narrow
littoral of Algiers, for the Wolffs, the Liszts, the
McManuses and Slotkins, the Monaitres and the
Wintringhams are found wherever men are found
in the 1940 s.
