This is the novel that appears once in
a decade
—
a novel so timely, so heart¬
breaking (and yet so inspiring) that it
becomes in the reading an actual part of
experience. This is real, you say to your¬
self. That man is one I have known.
That woman is one I would like to
know. Ideas, the freedom for which we
are fighting, become an immediate per¬
sonal problem. One does not quibble
about details under the whip of the
Gestapo.
The author accomplishes this really
amazing feat of transference (and it is
done with almost no apparent effort) by
focusing our attention on the lives of
only eight major characters: one lovely
woman and seven men. The scene of the
story is Prague, following the Nazi
occupation; the seven men are Gestapo
Commissioner
Reinhardt ;
Breda, an im¬
portant link in the Czech underground
movement
;
and five hostages under sen¬
tence of death. An ironic twist of fate
brings these five men together in a single
cell of the prison: a German officer van¬
ishes from a riverfront
café,
and the
entire clientele is rounded up. There are
twenty hostages in all, but the story is
only immediately concerned with five of
them.
The lives and innermost thoughts of
these five men who are facing almost
cer-
tain death are revealed with startling
clarity. Janoshik, the peasant, changes
before our eyes. His prankish anecdotes
take on subtle meaning, and his courage
and resourcefulness quicken the heart.
Wallerstein,
the psychiatrist, the cool,
scientific observer who would take notes
of his fellow prisoners' final hours, finds
that he also is a man of flesh and blood.
So, too, the great industrialist who is
sure his arrest is some terrible mistake,
the actor, and the journalist, show them¬
selves in their true colors. Trust
Rein¬
hardt
and his henchmen to bring out the
best, or worst, in any man.
But Reinhardt's web extends beyond
the prison, the length and breadth of the
ailing, silent city. Into it falls
Milada
Markova
who has lost her lover in the
riots at the University
—
Milada,
who has
the clue to the death of the German
officer, and thus becomes of supreme
importance to both the Gestapo and the
underground.
Reinhardt
can enjoy her
unconscious body, but not until Breda,
who earns her love, has struck a swift
and crushing blow for the defense of the
movement.
Hostages is a novel you will not forget.
In it are life and death and love, bravery,
treachery, torture, drama, mystery, sus¬
pense, and, in full measure, faith
—
faith
in the peoples of the world who are re¬
sisting with their hearts and souls and
bodies the curse that has been cast on all
Europe. Read it and you will be abso¬
lutely sure just why we are at war. |
