STOCZEK ŁUKOWSKI
(Summary)
ifty- five miles from Warsaw in central Poland, the town
of
Stoczek Łukowski
numbered around
4000
inhabitants
_____^_ in the period between the World Wars. It had a public
school, a sawmill, two flour mills, an electric power plant, and
direct bus communication with Warsaw,
Siedlce
and
Luków.
Without large industries, the town served mainly as a trade and
service center for the peasants around it.
The admirers of history associate the name of
Stoczek
first of
all with General Dwernickis victory over a strong Russian for¬
mation during the November Rebellion in
1831.
Moreover the
inhabitants of the town and the neighborhood have a vivid mem¬
ory of partisan squad of captain
Ostoja
(The Home Army), who
fought in this area with the German occupant during the World
War II.
But today hardly anyone knows, that until!
1942
most of the
Stoczek
inhabitants were Jews, mainly ancestors of Jewish settlers,
who had settled in the town at the beginning of the 19th century.
Every Tuesday
-
which was market day
-
the main square, with
its adjoining streets, was packed with the stands of merchants
and crafts-men, and with the horse-drawn carts of peasants who
brought their products to
Stoczek.
However on Friday nights the
127
streets would be almost completely deserted, and through win¬
dows of the one story Jewish houses one could see candles twin¬
kling over Sabbath suppers, because about
2500
of Stoczeks in¬
habitants were Jews.
The Polish-Jewish relations in the town were in general cor¬
rect, but not always free from the possibility of collision. The
source of occasional conflicts was usually the economic rivalry
between the Catholics and the Jews. During the long lasting
Polish-Jewish coexistence in
Stoczek
more and less favorable pe¬
riods could be observed. There were examples of mutual distrust
or even hostility, but also proofs of beneficial cooperation.
Few decades ago the Jewish community has disappeared from
the
Stoczek
landscape. Along with it the memory of the Polish-
Jewish coexistence began to fade away.
Reliably documented publication by Adam
Budzyński
and
Józef Filipczuk
is an attempt to revive the remembrance of the
Jews formerly living in
Stoczek,
about their relations with the
Polish neighbours and the tragic fate of the Jewish community
in the Holocaust. Authors tell about all this, as well as post-war
meetings with descendants of the local Jews visiting the town, with
a view to encourage readers to explore the lost world of the Jews
of
Stoczek
and to find a remainings traces of their existence.
