One of the most extraordinary
—
and seldom discussed
—
aspects of Malcolm X is his love of humanity and the
humanities. Nowhere are these dual concerns more impres¬
sively in evidence than in this collection. Carefully edited
with a sensitive and compelling introduction, Epps s new
edition of these speeches is a timely and central contribution
both to African American studies and to the larger debates
about the nature of a humane education.
—
Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Duke University
A marvelously fresh,
non-cliché,
and even self-reflective set
of commentary by Malcolm X on America s tortured legacy
and on the need for Blacks and Whites to challenge this
mundane and vicious legacy. Epps s Introduction and the
new Preface provide a brilliant and cogent mapping of
the inner logics of Malcolm X s mind.
—
Martin Kilson, Harvard University
Malcolm X spoke at the Harvard Law Forum on three significant
occasions: in
1961
at the height of his involvement with the Black
Muslims; in March of
1964
when he had just broken with the Black
Muslims; and again in December
1964,
soon after his extensive trip to
Africa and only two months before his assassination. Here are the
revolutionary ideas that made Malcolm X one of the most charismatic
and influential African-American leaders of the
1960s.
These speeches
document Malcolm s progression from Black nationalism to
internationalism, and are key to both understanding this singular
man s extraordinary life and
illuminatisi
his angjy. yet uplifting
cause.
