Resumé
This book is a part of the series of publications called Searching for the Czech
Interests. This series has a common ground in the conceptual definition of na¬
tional interest that is essentially based on the criteria of relevance, consensus,
and external acceptability. This set of criteria avoids both of the usual weak¬
nesses of the discussions about national interest
-
theoretical determination
and normative presupposition. The evolution of the conceptual framework is
offered in the first chapter.
The following chapters aim at applying this concept in the area of the
security dimension of the Czech foreign policy. Six thematic chapters cover
a wide range of topics reflecting the Czech interests in the security dimension
of foreign policy. The analyses cover the Czech discourses on the European
foreign policy, the timely topics of Afghanistan and energy security, the dis¬
cussion about the strategic culture as it appears in a fundamental strategic do¬
cument, the process of the Czech-German security and military cooperation,
and the issue of organized crime in the Vietnamese diaspora.
Besides using a common conceptualization of national interest, all of the
chapters approach their respective topics by innovatively applying the disci-
plinarily relevant methodologies. Firstly, the book offers analyses based on
discourse analysis, which show how rich a spectrum of resources could be
researched when dealing with a foreign policy. Secondly, the case studies il¬
lustrate how an analysis of national interests can derive from particular phe¬
nomena. Finally, while using the methodologies in national interest research
is generally unusual, the application of ethnography to addressing a security
issue is rather original. From a methodological perspective, the book appa¬
rently goes beyond the area of national interests and could be generally used
for didactic purposes in
IR.

Résumé
Last but not least the conclusion attempts to present a synthesis. Given the
large analytical dimension, the synthesis can go along several lines. First, it
is interesting to see the results achieved through applying different methodo¬
logies within the different meta-theoretical frameworks. Secondly, the three
criteria mentioned above that are operationalized in all of the chapters cre¬
ate a great amount of room for synthesis. Most importantly, the contempla¬
tion of the synthesis from a criterial perspective has led the editors to the in¬
troduction of a new lack of interest politics concept. This concept implies
foreign political issues that are relevant or at least considered as relevant by
the majority of the political elite but at the same time the attitudes regarding
these issues follow from the positions of major external partners without be¬
ing substantially anchored in the society s consensus.
In summary, this book offers a methodologically and conceptually infor¬
med discussion about the issue of the Czech interests in the area of security
policy, and it illustrates the application of diverging methodologies to vari¬
ous security topics. That said, it is meant to stimulate discussions about and
further research of Czech national interests.
