Summary
This study refers to the evidence documenting the extraordinary rela¬
tionship Archbishop
Arnošt
of Pardubice had towards
Kłodzko.
It began
with the miraculous vision the young
Arnošt
had before the altar of the
parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (the church was
managed by the monastery of the Order of St. John). The boy saw an
image (although probably a wooden sculpture) of the Virgin Mary with
a child turn its back to him for a moment. This vision caused the boy to
undergo a moral conversion.
Arnošt
left a message about this in an
undated clerical will, which was in the form of a sealed epistle and was
read in
Kłodzko
at his funeral service, and then in the other churches in
the diocese. According to a later source (the second edition of
Arnošťs
biography by Jan of
Kłodzko,
written after
1468),
Arnošt
placed his will
in the care of Neplach, the abbot of the monastery in Opatovice n.L. In

to Arnošťs vision
the author of the article mentions the question
of his date of birth, and states that by deducting the expected length of the
stages of
Arnošťs
life (career) that we know about from the first fixed date
to have been preserved in his life

1339),
one can assume that he
was born sometime between the end of the 13th century and
1305.
A vari¬
ety of evidence could also be gleaned from a possible anthropological sur¬
vey of the skeletal remains that are said to still be in the original grave. We
do not have any more precise facts about this, or about when
Arnošťs
father,
Arnošt
of
Hostýn,
worked in the province of
Kłodzko.
The author
rejects the opinion that he could have been the governor of the entire
province, but claims that he could only have been the custodian of one of
the royal castles. He draws attention to the as yet inadequate research done
into the development of the royal domain in
Kłodzko
and the administra¬
tive system in place there. The close relationship
Arnošt
of
Hostýn
enjoyed
with
Kłodzko
continued after he left the
Kłodzko
region. His tombstone,
dated to after the year
1340
and found in the Church of St. Giles
in Pardubice, was carved out of marble that came from
Kłodzko,
and his
will, from
29. XII. 1340,
was placed in the safekeeping of the monastery
archive in
Kłodzko
(probably into the archive of the Order of St. John).
The relatively numerous activities of Archbishop
Arnošt
of Pardubice and
his brothers in relation to
Kłodzko
culminated in the years
1349 - 1352
and then again at the beginning of the 1460s, shortly before
Arnošťs
death
(1364).
During this first period the
Augustinian
monastery was established
in
Kłodzko.
The archbishop lavishly endowed the monastery and it is clear
that he kept a cell there for personal contemplation. However, he did not
forget about the monastery of the Order of St. John, which he also
endowed with property, and at that time he established the ceremonial
hymnal mass Salve Reginae in the Church of the Virgin Mary and clearly
announced his decision that one of his graves would be there. The author
also draws attention to individual cases of
Arnošťs
patronage and looks
more closely into the question of where the panel image of the
Kłodzko
Madonna was originally situated (it is now in Berlin). He tends towards
the opinion that it was made for the parish and Order of St. John Church
of the Virgin Mary and only later (in the 16th century) moved to the
Augustinians.
Attention also focuses on
Arnošťs
tombstone in the Church
of the Virgin Mary. The author illustrates that the tomb is a later work
(clearly from the 18th or 19th century), as is the marble slab on the top on
which rests the figure of the archbishop. In order to clarify the origin of the
tombstone it would help to know the quarry the stone used to make the fig-

came from. The topic of the relationship
Arnošt
of Pardubice
had with
Kłodzko
offer numerous possibilities for further research.

Medieval Accounts of the Life of
Arnošt
of
Pardubice. Between Historiography and Hagiography
Summary
The oldest description of the life of
Arnošt
of Pardubice was made
shortly after his death by
Wilhelm
of Lestkovo. By the end of the Middle
Ages three more accounts were written: by
Jan Kłodzki,
an anonymous
one based on the Vatican manuscript, and a version adapted for Chronica
Ecclesiae Pragensis
by Benesz
Krabice
of Weitmile. We also have three
short biographical notes and an early 16th century life written by
Walentyn
Krautwald.
Succesive
lives were prepared on the basis of the
account by
Wilhelm
of Lestkovo and the one by
Jan Kłodzki.
We know a total of eleven medieval and one early modern lives of
Arnošt
of Pardubice. They occur most frequently in the company of
other
hagiographie
or
historiographie
texts. In nine cases a life was
accompanied by
miracula
ascribed to
Arnošt;
there were also
miracula
which occurred on their own. Although
Arnošťs
lives are set in specific
historical situations, they have characteristics typical of
hagiographie
works and present
Arnošt
as an ideal church dignitary.

Pardubice in the State Archives in Wroclaw (Regests)
Summary
The collection of the Archives includes
154
documents made by
Charles IV, Margrave of Moravia, Roman and Czech King, Roman
emperor. Most of them form part of the Official Documents of the City
of Wroclaw
,
some of the Official Documents of the City of
Świdnica
or
of the monastic collection (e.g. regarding the Monastery of St. Vincent
in
Wrocław,
the Monastery of St. Matthias in
Wrocław
or the Cistercian
Monastery at
Kamieniec Ząbkowicki).
As Margrave of Moravia, Charles used a seal with his coat of arms.
After becoming Czech (and Roman) king he used the majestic seal,
which changed after he was crowned Roman emperor in
1355.
Several
of the documents were co-signed with Czech and Roman king Vaclav IV,
son of Charles IV.
The Archives collection also includes

documents of Archbishop
Arnošt
of Pardubice, who was the closest associate of Charles IV and

who died in
1364,
which survive in the form of two originals and one
vidimus.

Land- Results of Archival Research
Summary
The State Archives in
Wrocław
and their Field Branches, which boast
an enormous collection of documents, have a surprisingly modest num¬
ber of archive material regarding Prague s archbishop
Arnošt,
a figure so
important to the history of the Church and the
Kłodzko
Land. The
research covered the collection of the Archives in
Wrocław
and the
Branch at
Kamieniec Ząbkowicki.
Information about the bishop, most
often in the form of chronicle notes, from the period spanning the late
18th
с
and the mid^Oth c, is to be found in the Formal Documents of
the Town of
Kłodzko.
Most of the materials were hand-written by histo¬
rians or teachers from
Kłodzko;
only few were made by researchers from
Wrocław
universities. The more noteworthy ones include:

Of interest is the fact that the bad condition of the tombstone of arch¬
bishop
Arnošt
located at the parish church at
Kłodzko
failed to interest
dr
Grandmann,
General Historical Preservation Officer for the Silesian
Province. Such an attitude was typical of the entire administrative
machine
-
both state and local authorities
-
until
1945.
Anniversary cel¬
ebrations related to
Arnošt
were usually organized by the Church, some¬
times only with some financial backing and honorary patronage of the
town government or the administration structures of the Poviat of
Kłodzko.
The search conducted at the State Archives at
Kamieniec Ząbkowic¬
ki
by
mgr Krystyna Drożdż
has yielded negative results, except for one
article in the local periodical Die
Grafschaft
Glatz from
1936.
The shortage of sources in the Archives is made up for by local mag¬
azines, devoted to the very town of
Kłodzko
itself or to the entire
Kłodzko
Land, and periodicals of religious nature, such as Arnestus-
kalender or Arnestus-Blatt. The editorial teams of the local papers tried
to keep the memory of the archbishop among the local community alive
by publishing an occasional article, but they were unable to prevent the

natural
process of the tradition related to God s pious servant archbish¬
op
Arnošt
of Pardubice dying out.

Status of Research into the Tombstone of
Arnošt
of Pardubice at the
Kłodzko
Church of the Assumption of the Blessed
Virgin Mary
Summary
The history of the
Kłodzko
monument of the first archbishop of Prague
is full of doubts and questions. We do not have any source-based knowl¬
edge of the circumstances in which the tombstone was commissioned or
made, when it was made, what it originally looked like or why it is seri¬
ously damaged. In line with the last will of
Arnošt
of Pardubice, spelled out
in his testament, he was buried in the church of the Knights of the Order of
the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in
Kłodzko,
as he had relinquished his
right to rest inside the newly built Gothic Cathedral of St Vitus in Prague.
The place of his burial was marked with a free-standing marble tomb with
a calcareous lying figure of the dignitary. According to the chronicle tradi¬
tion, the tombstone of archbishop
Arnošt
of Pardubice survived in its orig¬
inal state until the 15th c, when it is said to have been destroyed by oil ooz¬
ing from the inside of the grave. It was proposed on the five hundredth
anniversary of the archbishop s death that the destroyed medieval monu¬
ment should be replaced with a new piece. The archbishop s remains were
exhumed in
1881
and it was then that the original tombstone was removed
and a new one, made by
Johann
Janda
in
1870,
installed.
The research into the
Kłodzko
monument, initiated towards the end
of the 19th c, outlined a two-track interpretation of the artistic origin of
the work. The earliest research tradition links the tombstone of arch¬
bishop
Arnošt
of Pardubice with the tombstones of bishop Preclav of
Pogarel in Wroclaw and archbishop
Jan Očka
of
Vlašim
in Prague. The
three works are usually said to have been executed in the Czech work¬
shop of the Parlers, who participated in the erection and decoration of the
Cathedral of St Vitus in Prague (P.

has made an attempt to sum up the results of the researchers studies
regarding the
Kłodzko
monument. The author of the article regards the

French sources as typological, not stylistic in nature, pointing out the
Parlers workshop masters, who worked on the decoration of the Western
vestibule of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in
Nürnberg,
as a
possible environment from which the form of the three bishops monu¬
ments originated. The stylistic features suggest two artistic individuali¬
ties working on the tombstones in question
-
one from the tradition of
the Parlers workshop in Germany, who executed the monuments of
Preclav and
Jan Očka,
another
-
the creator of the
Kłodzko
tombstone,
who was more closely connected with the Prague workshop.

of Pardubice in the Jesuit monastic
propaganda at the time of the Counter-Reformation in the 17th

The
historical sources in the form of publications by
Bohuslav
Balbin
and
Johannes Miller, and above all the results of an analysis of the shape and
form of the tombstone itself during the Baroque, its preserved original
topography and the pictographic elements that were added later have
been used to study the monastic creation of a tradition of the archbish¬
op s
sepultura.
Of key importance to the efforts aimed at enriching the
Gothic tombstone with new ecclesiological content were the following
events, which have been discussed as part of historical research on many
occasions to date: the spontaneous disintegration of the entire tombstone
and the leak of a mysterious oily substance from the
gisant
figure in
1468.
The phenomenon of modern perception and propaganda emphasis
on the events is examined from a new perspective, above all by taking
account of the unique meaning of the tombstone as the primary visual
element of
memoria,
particularly well visible as part of
anniversaria,
with an indication of the significance of the visual setting of
sepultura
as
a carrier of the collective image of the late founder.

Regarding the Archbishop s
Kłodzko
Monument from

Summary
The article focuses on problems with the interpretation of the ideo¬
logical aspects of the tombstone-cenotaph of archbishop
Arnošt
of

Pardubice, made by
Jan Janda
in
1870.
The circumstances in which the
piece was executed, the persons involved, the historical context
-
fasci¬
nating in itself- as well as the very monument itself allow for numerous
possible explanations. The most justifiable interpretation seems to be
that the piece, through reference to the time of Charles IV, emphasizes
the historical and inextricable connection between Bohemia and the
member states of the Reich. By showing the figure of
Arnošt,
a Czech,
it indicates that the way to national self-fulfilment leads through the rela¬
tionship of Czechs with the structures of the (Austrian or future
German?) Empire and the Church in Rome, not in opposition to them.
The fact that the bishop is represented in the kneeling posture, irrespec¬
tive of the several-centuries-long tradition of such tombstones, stresses
the importance of humility towards the Church and the sacralized
authority of the monarch. The bishop s monument can thus be perceived
as an expression of the conservative trends and the desire to preserve the
political system in Europe after the Congress of Vienna, and so to rescue
the remains of the medieval
universalism,
which once again became
endangered, just like in the Hussite era, because of the Czech Pan-
Slavism. And it is perhaps this aspect of the tombstone, incompatible
with the national-and-Hussite Czech historiography, and not only
because of its location beyond the boundaries of the Czech state, that is
the reason for its alienation from the history of Czech culture.

Make the Tombstone of
Arnošt
of Pardubice
Summary
The author of this article is a geologist at the Museum of East
Bohemia in Pardubice and presents information regarding his intention
to perform a survey aiming to determine what material was used to make
the tombstone of
Arnošt
of Pardubice (statue lying on the tomb), situat¬
ed in the parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in
Kłodzko,
and to find the place where the rock used to make the tombstone came
from. The tombstone is made from argillite and the preliminary hypoth¬
esis is that it came from a quarry near Prague, from where the stone was
taken by the well-known

This should be taken into account when
making decisions regarding the fate of any of the works in question, espe¬
