Women in Power?
A View from the
Sejm
The book finds its place in the more general thread of research and reflection
on the issue of women and politics . It presents the results of a study carried
out as a part of the Women in the political elites project, which focused on
the female deputies to
Sejm
(the lower house of the Polish Parliament) of the
IV parliamentary term of office
(2001-2005).
The experiences of these women
on their route into, as well as their subsequent practice of politics, constitute the
main topic of the analyses which make up the book. In-depth interviews were
carried out with
85
women deputies.
The dissimilarity of women s life experiences compared to men is, on the
one hand, a barrier hindering their participation in politics; on the other hand,
however, it provides an argument for women s participation in political life and
in the decision-making bodies.
This dissimilarity, as pointed out in the contribution by Barbara Post,
Gender as a cultural feature in Polish Parliament

is also an important and deliberately emphasises the aspect of the
resources brought into politics by women, as well as of the manner in which
they operate in politics. The models of activity they implement in the political
sphere are also feminine rather than masculine .

shows that the opinions of the female deputies reflect those held
by Polish women as a whole, namely the clash between the followers of the
modern and the traditional approach to categorising roles into male and
female.

women in politics

reconstructs
the organisational cultures of political parties, focusing in particular on the
mechanisms and patterns of hidden discrimination which permeate them,
holding women at subordinate positions.
A chapter by
Witold Betkiewicz,
The demographic and social Profile of
the female deputies to the
Sejm
of the Republic of Poland (Demograficzno-
-społeczny obraz posłanek na Sejm RP),
is different from the previous
contributions. Based on a quantitative method, the author presents a synthetic
review of the social and demographic features of the female and male deputies
to the
Sejm
of the Republic of Poland, from parliamentary terms I to VI
(1991-
-2007),
providing a context for the in-depth, qualitative analyses of the
opinions of the female parliamentarians presented in the remaining parts of the
book.
