SUMMARY
The beginnings of the
Rakowice-Czyżyny
airfield date back to the period before the First
World War. During the war this airfield was an important air base of the Austro-Hungarian
army. In November
1918
the
Rakowice-Czyżyny
airfield became the first airfield of independ¬
ent Poland. Between
1918
and
1921
the development of the airfield continued and repair
shops started to function. From
1919
to
1920
the Lower School of Aviation, which was estab¬
lished at the airfield, trained pilots for the Polish Air Force. One of the first graduates of this
school was
Janusz
Meissner who later became a famous writer.
The organization of the Second Group of the Polish Air Force in August
1921
was the fac¬
tor of great importance for the further existence of the
Rakowice-Czyżyny
airfield. The first
commander of the Group was group-captain Ernest
Ciesielski.
The last one was group-captain
Stanisław Nazarkiewicz.
During these
18
years numerous squadrons of the Second Group were
stationed at the airfield. They used various types of aircrafts. During the 20-ties and 30-ties
further extension and development of the airfield took place. In
1923
an airport was created on
its territory. It was used until the outbreak of the Second World War. Its location was changed
several times. Many connections were only temporary. Only flights to Warsaw continued regu¬
larly until
1939.
From
1928
the Cracow
Aeroclub
started to function.
Between
1939
and
1945
the
Rakowice-Czyżyny
airfield was under German occupation. It
remained under the command of the German Luftgau
VIII.
Various squadrons of the German
Luftwaffe were stationed at the airfield again. Germans took up various construction works. Pris¬
oners of war and Jews were forced to work there with volunteers from the Construction Services
(Baudienst)
and Polish workers employed on the regular basis. During the period of German
occupation the Home Army conducted various intelligence and sabotage activities on the area of
the airfield. From January
1945
to October
1945
it was under control of the Soviet Red Army.
From October
1945
to August
1955
the Polish People s Army was stationed again at the
airfield in a form of the Second Group of the Fighting Air Force and the Third Group of the
Fighting Air Force. The Third Group left the airfield in
1947.
The Second Group remained until August
1955
when it was relocated to the
Balice
airfield
near Cracow. The
Rakowice-Czyżyny
airfield lost its importance although the airport which
was created again in
1945
was still used for several years.
