À la faveur d un essor économique sans précédent, Bordeaux connaît au xvine siècle une véritable
transformation urbaine. La prospérité de la ville, qui attire une population active venue de toute la
région, ainsi que des négociants et des armateurs issus de différents horizons européens, est avant
tout le résultat du dynamisme de son négoce maritime qui la place au cœur des échanges
internationaux.
Ce commerce est cependant entaché des tragédies humaines générées par la Traite et l esclavage,
alors en usage en un siècle qui voit en parallèle se développer les idées des Lumières.
À cette même époque, un important mouvement migratoire des Aquitains se produit en direction
des colonies antillaises, Saint-Domingue en tête. Ils y prospéreront jusqu aux premières révoltes des
esclaves qui aboutiront, en
1848,
à l abolition définitive de l esclavage en France.
Après l ouverture des salles du Musée d Aquitaine consacrées à
«

»
en mai
2009,
cet ouvrage, richement illustré de documents inédits,
contribue à diffuser l état des connaissances sur cette question en présentant avant tout des faits et
leur enchaînement. Cet objectif contraint à décentrer son regard
:
si Bordeaux et l Aquitaine sont
bien au cœur de cette histoire, il faut aussi aller voir en Afrique ou aux Antilles comment celle-ci a
été vécue.
The 18th century was a period of unprecedented prosperity and far-reaching urban development in
Bordeaux. The city s economic success was largely born from its flourishing maritime trade,
attracting workers from across the region and wholesale merchants and shipping entrepreneurs
from a variety of European horizons, establishing Bordeaux at the heart of international exchange.
It was a commercial boom stained with the countless human tragedies engendered by the Slave
Trade, common practice in a century in which the ideas of the Enlightenment also found a fertile
breeding ground.
The period was one of intense migration from the
Aquitaine
region to the French West Indies, with
nt-Domingue a destination of choice. The colonists prospered there until the first slave
insurrections which, in
1848,
culminated in the definitive abolition of slavery in France,
May
2009,
the
Musée d Aquitaine
opened a permanent exhibition entitled Bordeaux in the
18№ Century -Trans-Atlantic Trading and Slavery. Hand in hand with this richly illustrated catalogue
replete with previously unpublished documents, its aim is to broaden public understanding of the
question by presenting the facts in the order they arose. A shift in stance is indispensable -while
Bordeaux
and the
Aquitaine
region lay at the heart of events, the picture would be incomplete without
some insight into the response they elicited in Africa and the Caribbean.
