SUMMARY
The Court of the prince Alexander Karadjordjevic
(1842-1858)
repre¬
sented in the history of the Serbian state of the new age a transitional phase in
the process of transforming of the ruler's residence into an official state
institution and administrative department. Before that even from
1804,
the
court did represent the center of the political life in the country but no one
even thought of its transformation into any kind of a formal institution. The
regime that proclaimed and defended the constitution (the so called
"Ustavo¬
branitelji"),
and that brought the prince Alexander to the throne was exactly
the most responsible for the establishing of the modern institutions (that exist
even nowadays); it also brought about the great impact and spirit of Europe
into Serbia. Nevertheless having in mind that this regime endeavored to put to
margin the role of the ruler in the political life, likewise the court was given
the same marginal even informal role quite different from other institutions.
Moreover the court was not the property of the prince but of the state. The
court was not a part of the state schematics, there was neither official court
protocol, nor the court supervisor. It was also out of the question to have the
book of the court ceremonials printed. Only to a certain degree, there were
some ceremonial actions which were expected to be followed by the mem¬
bers of the State Council, ministers and other officials in their relation to the
prince. Anyway eventually the royal couple managed personally to gradually
transform the court into a modern European institution (including way of
dressing, choice of food.ete) Thus the prince had not only his numerous
servants but also his adjutants who had their military ranks: Those army
officers were responsible both for some administrative work and for the
personal security of the prince. Apart from the adjutants, the court had its
doctors, tutors and counselors of the prince's children who were brought to
the court from Europe: the royal artists who portrayed the members of the
royal family and other persons

all this was done to emphasize the historic
importance of the Karadjordjevic dynasty

The court thus became at first the
center of cultural and later on of political life of the country (for ex: artistic
meetings.) When the State Council seemed to have realized that the prince
had stepped out of its political competencies (that had been assigned to
