SUMMARY
HISTORY OF THE GUARDS
By the Decree of May
1
2th
1838,
the Princely Guard, consisting of one Cavalry
platoon, was established in Serbia. That date was also embroidered on the standard
which was presented to the unit.
This Guard did palace service and ruler's (Princes) escort in all situations. As the
whole army was gradually enlarged, so was the Guard. On February 24th
1875,
the
Guard Squadron was formed, and after the proclamation of the Kingdom of Serbia
in
1882,
by the new formation, the Squadron was transformed into the Royal Guard.
From that time onwards, the Royal Guard was constantly growing, so that in
1893
it
was elevated to Regiment, and in
1901
the Infantry Company was formed.
As the uniform of the guards was very attractive and differed from the rest of the
army, it was frequently the subject of interest of painters and photographers. It was also
recorded on the oldest preserved Serbian documentary film of the coronation of King
Petar
I in
1904.
During the liberation wars of Serbia in
1912-13
and in
1914-18,
the Royal Guard
participated in battles whereas only its a small part was retained as the escort of the
supreme commander King
Petar
and Crown Prince
Aleksandar.
During the withdrawal
of the Serbian army through Albania, the Royal Guard fulfilled its duty with honor by
escorting its ruler and finding the way through the mountains all the way to the Ionian
Sea. On the Salonika Front, beside the duty of the life guard of the ruler, the Royal
Guard also accompanied other units of the Serbian Army in the military operations.
After the liberation of the country and the unification into the Kingdom of Serbs,
Croats and Slovenes in
1918,
from
1929
the Kingdom ofYugoslavia, the Royal Guard
continued its growth. In
1919
it was elevated to Brigade (one Cavalry and one Infantry
Regiment), in
1924
the Cavalry Regiment became the Brigade (consisted of two
Regiments) and same year the Artillery Regiment was formed (one Battalion consisted
of two Horse Batteries and one Battalion consisted of two Mountain Batteries), as well
as Automobile Company. In
1928
the Company of Engineers was formed. At the time
of the outbreak of the World War
2,
the Royal Guard had the Division strength.

From the very beginning, the young men from the best Serbian
families and with good riding skills were drafted for service in the Royal
Guard. As for officers, besides their success at the Military Academy
and other characteristics of the good soldier, their good looks were
also an imperative. Usually it was the Commander of the Royal Guard who
personally selected officers for the Guard service.
During the April War, the Yugoslav Guard was part of the 6th Army and
met the same destiny as the rest of the Royal Yugoslav Armed forces.
During the war, within the military formations under the
command of the Prime Minister General Milan Nedic,
the Serbian Guard of the Company strength was
formed for the ceremonial duties and guard of the
Government building. This unit was disbanded in
October
1944.
On the other side from the Free
Yugoslavs in Northern Africa in late
1941
was
formed
1
st Battalion, Royal Yugoslav Guards, which
was part of the
1
lth Brigade, 4th Indian Division. At
the same time, the
1st
Battalion, the Royal Yugoslav
Guards (which was part of the 11th Brigade, 4th
Indian Division) was formed in late
1941
from the
Free Yugoslavs in Northern Africa. This unit saw
no action before until it was disbanded in March
1944.

UNIFORM OF THE GUARD
The uniform of the Royal Guard differed from the other
army units, and even the uniforms of the Royal Guard Cavalry
and Infantry differed (and other arms-of service afterwards).
Although the Guard was established in
1838,
the first
distinctive uniforms were introduced in 18S9. The Royal Guard
uniform was ofthe hussarfashion andbasicallyremained the same
throughout the continuation of this unit. The uniform consisted
of the ceremonial hussar pattern tunic
'Atila"
breeches, service
tunic "Milanka" (introduced in
1882),
dolman (introduced in
1896),
dark brown great coat, hussar pattern boots, calpack, sash,
sword, cartridge box with cross belt and white gloves.
The ceremonial tunic ofthe Royal Guard Cavalry was called
"Dusanka" as in reminiscence to of the Serbian medieval
emperor Dusan as the 14th Century was the time ofthe first
appearances of hussars in Serbia, even before in Hungary.
"Dusanka"
(Atila)
was green and adorned with gold cords. The
front was decorated with six horizontal rows of gold cords which
were reduced in length from the top to the bottom. Those cords
were adorned by the with a gilded metal rosette on the outer ends
and buttons were in the shape of the a spiral shell (olivets). The top of
the stand up collar and the bottom edge were ornamented with gold
cords around the edges. The gold cord continued down the leading
edge of the tunic and around the bottom of the skirts. The
cuffs were decorated around with gold cord and ending
with the Austrian knot on the front. The back skirts
were also ornamented in gold cord. The shoulder
straps were made of the a quadruple gold cord and
wore held rank insignia
-
white metal pips, over
which was placed (after
1882)
the Kings cipher
also in white metal.
The cavalry calpack was made of black
astrakhan fur with a white heron feathers plume.
A red bag, hung down the right hand side was set
into the top, terminating with the a gold cord boss
at the base of the bag. The caplines in the shape of
the interlaced gold cord, hooked on the calpack under
the bag, passed across the front and then hooked up on
the left side with a tassel on the end were introduced in
1901.
On the front top was worn enamel cockade which
was replaced in
1904
by the King's cipher made of yellow
metal. Other ranks wore the same type of calpack although
made oflamb skin and decorated with yellow wool instead
of gold cords and with shorter plume.
The sash (esharpe) was of the interlaced gold cord
with here embroidered rosettes on the front, with two tassels
under the middle rosette and with two gold cord bars hanging
from the front and then hooked to the right-hand side.
Dolman (pelisse) was of the a light blue colour, ornamented
with black astrakhan on the edges all round the bottom and the
base of the side seams, collar and cuffs as well the side pocket
leads. It was usually worn hanging over the left shoulder. The black
patent hussar pattern riding boots had a heart-shaped cut on the
top which was also edged in gold cord and with a gilded metal
rosette in the middle. The spurs were fixed to the heels.

The light blue "Milanka" as a service dress tunic was introduced in
1882.
It was single- breasted, fastened at the breast with gold-worked
olivets, with the leading edge with the gold cord which continued around
the bottom edge of the skirt. The cuffs were ornamented with a gold
cord knot. The "Milanka' differed from "Dusanka" by two breast
pockets with three pointed 'Austrian pattern" pocket flaps and by
the absence of the horizontal gold cord bars on the breast.
The
crossbelt
was gold embroidered with a silver lion
head breast ornament, chains and pickers, buckle slide and
tip suspending in the middle of the back. The pouch was a
silver flap with the Serbian coat of arms in gilt in the centre.
The box behind the flap was made of wood covered with
red Morocco leather.
The breeches were the same for all arms of service
and made of red cloth with a gold cord running down the
outside seam of each leg. The staff officers had dark blue
lampassen
whereas Generals' breeches had wide gold
laced stripes on both sides of the gold cord.
After
1901,
when the Royal Guard Infantry Company
was formed, officers and other ranks wore
"Atila"
like the
Cavalry, but in light grey colour and adorned with black
ornaments.
Army uniform Regulation from
1924
introduced some
novelties in the Royal Guard uniforms. The light grey Infantry
Atila
was replaced by the dark blue Milanka. Later on, when the
Royal Guard Artillery was introduced, it was also dressed in the
Milanka, although in a dark brown colour. A new Infantry and
Artillery calpack was also changed introduced. It was also made of
black astrakhan, but with a flat top in red cloth, without the
bak
bag and
caplines. It bore the yellow metal Royal cipher in the centre. Infantry
officers got the dark blue dolmans, artillery dark brown respectfully, but it
was never worn in the shoulder-hanging fashion.
By the same Regulation was introduced the service tunic for all ranks
of the Royal Guard. The service tunic was grey green with collar, cuffs and
outer seams decorated with the an olive green cord. The collar was decorated
by the with an "U shaped patch in the arms of service colours (light blue for
Cavalry, red for Infantry and black for Artillery).
In the 1860s and 1870s, rank insignia of the Guard were
the six pointed silver stars (pips) embroidered on the collar of
the
"Dusanka".
In
1882
for
"Dusanka"
and
"Milanka"
were
introduced shoulder straps consisting of four gold cords as
the rank insignia. The four pointed silver stars (pips) were
fixed to the shoulder straps in a row. According to this, one
star was for the
2nd
Lieutenant, two stars for the Lieutenant,
three stars for
2nd
Class Captain and four stars for the
1st
Class
Captain. The ranks of the senior (Staff) officers differed
by the wide gold lace stripe on the cuffs and the gold
laced triangle under the gold cord knot and gold lace
stripe on the collar which was worn only until
1924.
The General ranks were introduced in
1923
for the
first time. The Generals of the Royal Guard wore
the triple interlaced gold cord with Prussian pattern
shoulder boards and six pointed gold stars (pips)
fixed on the cuffs above the gold cord knots, one
for the General of the Brigade, two for the General
of the Division and three for the Army General.
Other ranks had all ornaments and shoulder
straps in yellow wool instead of the gold cord.
Rank insignia on the service tunic were the
standard army pattern shoulder boards with the
only difference being that Royal Guards officers
wore the Kings cipher in white metal above the
rank insignia pips.
Uniform of the
Srpska
Garda
during the World War
2
was very similar to the Royal Guard Infantry uniform
from
1924.
Milanka was without cord decorations, and
only the cuff knot retained. The novelty was the left
upper sleeve red patch with embroidered white double
headed eagle. On the front of the calpack was worn
a double headed eagle in white metal instead of the
Royal cipher.
The Guard uniform illustrated the continuity of the
military unit which was the symbol of independence
and sovereignty of the State at the same time. The
Royal Guard grew simultaneously with the entire
army. In the beginning it was only the rulers life
guard and later it became an elite military unit
with the Division strength.
