SUMMARY
The rural settlement of
Roč
in the north part of
Istria
is situated
8
km east
of
Buzet,
along the road that from the ancient times led from the notch of
Učka
through Vranje and Lupoglav further westwards. The village is situated on a hill,
which actually is the last western spur of the
Učka
massif that later spreads into a
wider ledge. The ledge on its southern part leads to the centre of
Istria,
while on
its west side, across
Buzet
and the valley of the river
Mirna,
it heads to the west
Istrian coast. The Roman settlement and the fort, having supposedly been placed
on the very same spot, hadn t left any trace of the settlements name in numerous
monuments which were found there.
The first mention of the name
Roč
appeared in the mediaeval documents
under different names
-
Ruz, Ronz, Roč,
and others. It was referred to for the first
time in a document dated July 31st
1064.
The document was published in Glossary,
by which king Henry IV bestows upon margrave
Urlik
(Odoricus)

royal tenanted
farms in
Istria
with Ruz
(Roč)
being one of them.
In
1102
Ulriks
son
Ulrik
II bestows all his estates in
Istria
upon the church of
Aquileia, in order to get salvation of his and his wife s soul. The estate of Ronz
(Roč)
is excluded from this bestowal and given to his own vassal Meginhard along with
the castles of Cernogradus (Crnigrad, the black town) and Bellegradus (Beligrad, the
white town) that are given to his vassal Adalbert. Meginhard and Adalbert, that is their
successors don t remain long into the possession of the above mentioned properties
since in
XIII
century they are found to be property of the church of Aquileia. It
remains the patriarchs property until
1412
when Venice gets it under its reign, and
this status is remained up to the Fall of the Republic in
1797.
Little is known on the
history of
Roč
during the patriarch s reign since there is a scarcity of documented
monuments to show evidence of its existence during this historical period. The estates
in
Istria
were governed by the patriarchs through their representatives known under
the name of
»marchio«
while their service was referred to as »marchionatus«.
Due to the lack of written sources on the history of
Roč
under the rule of
the patriarch we can learn something from the preserved monuments of material
culture. At those times
Roč
was undoubtedly a well-fortified town, wall-bounded
and encircled by defensive towers that were later destroyed as soon as Venice took
possession of the town. Up to the present times only a smaller fragment of one
polygonal tower in the top northern part of the town has been preserved, which
is allegedly a remnant of the destroyed castle. There is substantial evidence that
on the spot nearby the castle there were three Romanesque churches
-
St. Peter s
(today St. Roch s), St. Anthony the Abbot and St. Bartholomew (the parish church).
Speaking of the towns construction we can only suppose that there were two rows
of houses connecting the castle with the dual churches (of St. Bartholomew and of
St. Anthony) situated on the top of the hill next to which there was probably already

at the same time the church-tower turanj as an autonomous object. No doubt that
numerous gardens and haylofts found their place inside the walls, which in cases of
town being under the siege could provide with food for the people as well as for the
cattle since a document dating back to

May
1504
testifies of an exchange of certain
defensive wall for a piece of land, that is hay-crop at Brol, placed among the church
of St. Anthony and the small town gate.
There is direct evidence of the life of the inhabitants of
Roč
through other
monuments from its cultural history, such as Glagolitic breviary of St. Vitus of
Omiš
ordered in
1391
for the needs of the brotherhood of St. Bartholomew and St. Anthony
the Abbot and the Missal of the Duke Novak, acquired in
1405
for the requirements
of the churches of St. Helen and St. Peter at Nugla.
When Venice gained possession over
Roč
in
1412
its intention was to depopulate
the town and to destroy its walls and fortresses. Soon, the idea of depopulation was
abandoned, while the plan of the destruction of the mentioned walls was completely
executed.
The boundaries dividing the communes of
Istria
weren t completely defined
which often led to arguments regarding pasture, forest cutting, and plough-field
cultivation. Captain
Franjo Basadona
of
Raspor
and the Master of Lupoglav Gonter
Herberstainer tried to resolve the disagreements between
Roč,
Lupoglav, and
Semić
by a joint agreement on March
17
in
1420.
Having all together perambulated the
boundary, checked the land frontage and listened to the older people residents of the
mentioned area, they later had a meeting in the community home in order to try to
set the pasture boundaries for all: the people of
Roč,
Lupoglav, and
Semić.
It was then
agreed that people from
Roč
and Lupoglav could cultivate their fields situated on the
other side of the boundary. The villagers of
Roč
were at the meeting represented by
the district-prefect Berthosius Barbaric, and Ivan known as Purg.
In order to fortify the castle of
Roč,
positioned along the boundary, from
any possible dashes, Venice consented in
1421
to the rebuilding of the lime-bound
wall.
Not long after having gained the dominance over
Roč
Venice pawned it to one
of its meritorious citizens, who soon let go of it by pawning it for one hundred gold
coins (ducats). When the people of
Roč
informed Venice of the fact in
1444
it sent
its dukal
{ducale
-
official document) to let the Captain of
Raspor
know he was to
pay back money to the new owner, meanwhile ordering the people of
Roč
to obey to
their old rules. Therefore
Roč, just
as the other places under the rule of the Captain
of
Raspor,
was put under the direct govern of the Republic and became the »state
village«.
From mid of the XV century, during the times of a relatively peaceful period,
there are no special notes on
Roč.
A part of its history is supplemented by notes about the cultural monuments.
Undoubtedly,
Roč
played an important role when it came to the publication
of the incunabulum

according to many, the best Croatian book. It is unequivocally stated in the account
of deacon
Juraj
from
Roč,
himself being the only notable name from the editorial
board of
Prvotisak.
In terms of church
Roč
was a parish church member of the Trieste diocese.
Apart from the Latin language there had, from the ancient times, been in use
Croatian language and Glagolitic script, of which apart from
Ročki glagoljski
misal
(Glagolitic missal of
Roč)
from XV century and
Kopenhagenski
misal
(Copenhagen
missal) from XIV/XV century, along with numerous Glagolitic fragments taken off
from the covers of
Novakov
misal
(Novak s missal),
Ročki
misal
(the Missal of
Roč)
and Greblova kvadriga, also testify the notable
Ročki
abecedarij (the Abecedarium of
Roč)
dating back at around
1200.
A Glagolitic scribe school was also active in
Roč
and it produced names such
as deacon
Juraj,
the data logger of the printing of Glagolitic Missal from
1483,
Simun
Greblo,
the writer or rewriter of more Glagolitic books, priest
Ilija Pećarić
and others.
Among the most prominent representatives of this school were
Simun
s son
Jeronim
Greblo,
who was a long-term leader of
Knjiga računa bratovštine
sv.
Bartolomeja
(Book of bills of the brotherhood of St. Bartholomew) and was the founder of
Knjiga
računa općine Roč
(Book of bills of the municipality of
Roč),
which is the subject of
this work.
The Book can be found in the
HAZU
(Croatian Academy of Sciences and
Arts) archive in Zagreb as a constituent part of
Knjiga računa bratovštine (crkve) i
općine Roč u Istri,
(Book of bills of the brotherhood (church) and the municipality of
Roč
in
Istria,
year
1523-1611
and
1566-1628).
The author published the first part of
the joint Book in
2006
under the name of
Glagoljski rukopis iz Roča. Iz Knjige crkve i
bratovštine sv.
Bartolomeja
(1523-1611),
(Glagolitic
manuscript from
Roč
from the
Book of church and brotherhood of St. Bartholomew), edited by the State Archives
of
Pazin.

(Book of bills of the municipality of
Roč)
is found
on f. 184r (174r)
-
f. 285v (275v) of the above mentioned
Knjige računa bratovštine
(crkve) i općine Roč
(1523-1628),
(Book of bills of the brotherhood (church) and of
the municipality of
Roč).
It starts with the old original Glagolitic foliation present
from f.
20
up to f.
40,
while later it proceeds in Arabic enumeration from f. 41r
till the end of the Book. Since it only subsequently became part of a unique whole
together with the first Book it has nowadays obtained a new foliation. Due to the
archivists lapses at the enumeration of the Book today we have two, sporadically
even three, different foliations. Transliteration was performed from the copy of the
old perforated film where enumeration after f.

immediately skipped to f.
130,
while some of the pages were left unmarked. With the second foliation only the first
mistake got corrected while the second one was left intact, therefore neither this last
one demonstrates us the real set-up of the Book. Moreover, the author additionally
pinpoints to the fact that the last sheet
-
the first Book s snip was subsequently cut
off which led to a new change in foliation. In order to handle the transliteration with
ease he mentions the initial foliation adding in brackets the present one, noting it is

not completely correct either.
The primary
-
Glagolitic foliation shows there are first

pages of the book
missing. Having examined the whole book the author concludes there is not present
the part of the book comprising the accounts on the incomes and expenditures for
the period from
1580
till
1593,
which had been lost prior to the book binding, and
he carries on claiming that according to some notes there is also the end of the Book
missing as well.
The Book is a reliable source for the study of economic history of
Roč
since it
tells of the municipality s incomes and expenditures in the given period of time.
The municipality s main incomes were obtained by levies (according to
urbari)
-
corpus of regulations) of the co-villagers, from dacija
za meso
(levy for meat),
sklada
marak (money contribution),
sklada
zed (contribution in rabbits),
kmetov
vina
(pheasant s wine). Among incomes those gained by the selling of wine and hay
are mentioned, then those from house rents on
na doliente
vrat
(the lower city gate
area), as well as on other community houses, the selling of bikarije (butcher s shop)
and
oštarije
(tavern), the rent
oíkovačija
(blacksmiths workshop), the sale of lime,
the rent of hayfields at
Grbino čelo, Brol, Crni Grad
and
Medveica.
The expenses in their major part relate to levies to the Captain of
Raspor,
settling the costs for the Captain and his retinue during his visits at
Roč,
and numerous
others comprising costs for: the cernidi parade, the payment of obligations to the
galley-slaves and vastadori, the acquisition of the tools needed for the blacksmiths
workshop, the construction of lime-kilns, the restoration of the old palace
(polaca),
the construction of new palace, land remeasuring, road building, repair of the
bridges, city walls, the armament, district-prefect s and deputy-prefect s trips and
those of priests
{piovana),
judges
(žudiha)
and other notables
(muži)
to
Buzet,
Koper,
Venice and other places. Furthermore, there were costs for: the boundary
ranging (mostly towards Lupoglav), confirmation, visits paid by the inhabitants
of Nugla on Ash Wednesdays and those of Hum on Good Friday, the payment of
lawyers
(doktora)
at the times of drawing up of certain documents, the writer
(piscu)
of annual reports on business transactions, the doctor (medig), speakers (govorci),
various festivities, district-prefect s wedding
(pir),
parish priests promotion, the
costs of the Captain or valputa (village steward) and his retinue s visits, when they
would eat meat (predominantly goat s), bread, cheese, smoked ham, while wine was
poured in abundance.
What is interesting to note is that the price of bread over a longer period of
time, for which the data is preserved, from
1567
till
1578,
was a constant one of

(old Istrian money), meanwhile the price of grain during the same given
period considerably varied. For a spud (old Istrian measure approx.

litres) of grain

The carriers of the economic development of
Roč
municipality were
numerous brotherhoods such as for instance those of: St. Bartholomew, St. Anthony,

St. Peter, St. Marina, St. John, St. Maurus, St. Andrew, St. Thomas,
St. Mary and
St.
George.
Apart from their principle aim, to nurture piety and to offer help to all their
members, especially during the years of scarce production, they become more and
more financial institutions dealing with the saving of foreign (especially the one of
municipality) and the borrowing of its own money.
In the Book the author dedicates a special place to talk about the district-
prefects of
Roč,
and about the old measures of
Roč, Raspor,
and
Buzet.
Afterwards, he tells of the way he accomplished transliteration from Glagolitic
to Latin script, to continue later with the entire transliteration of the Glagolitic
accounts.
After the transliteration of the Glagolitic accounts he presents us with the
replication of the whole Book. The Book is completed by many appendices: The
chronological order of accounts (notations on incomes and expenses of the municipality;
other notations), Alphabetical index of first names and surnames, District-prefect
and deputy-prefect audits, as well as audits of other judges mentioned in the Book,
Review of the registered wine prices, Registered grain prices, Prices of cheese and curd,
Fowl prices, Poultry prices, Bread prices, The money mentioned in the Book, Ligatures
present in the Book, and Abbreviations from the Book itself.
