THE PANTHEON OF ODESOS
CULTS, MYTHS, AND MYSTERIES
(Summary)
The city of Antiquity was a religious community. Religious
cults used to be marks of the ancient poleis identity, engaging
their residents in the political unity of the city-state. Cultic
buildings were of crucial importance in the exquisite ensemble
of public buildings, forming the architectural outline of the
ancient city. A very special ambience of closeness to the gods
characterized the urban landscape of Antiquity, brought about
by the concentration of shrines and temples in a relatively
confined
polis
space.
The religious concepts and beliefs, as well as the cult symbols
of Odessos residents kept in line with the
polis
development.
They reflected its specific mixed ethnic characteristic and the
resulting multi-culturality. Epigraphic and other archaeological
data testify to the seeking of divine protection and the worship
of various Greek, Roman, eastern, and local (Thracian) pagan
gods during the many centuries of the city's existence. Nearly
all the magnificent figures of the Thracian, Greek, and Roman
pantheons, as well as the fascinating mythical tales of gods,
mortals, and their dramatic relations were well known under
the sky of Odessa and were respectively celebrated with splendid
religious feasts in the city. It was as early as the times of the
original settlers that the religious life there already abounded in
various cultic events.
The sacred temple buildings, where the
polis
communicated
with the gods and the people of Odessos sought for solutions
to their problems or predictions of the future, were located in
the area of the modern port of Varna, known even today as the
'Greek neighbourhood'. The coins minted in Odessos are the
only testimony of the appearance of the ancient shrines. On
their reverse, one can see images of monumental architectural
structures, some of which represent religious sites that in reality
existed in the city. For example, on the obverse of a bronze coin
from the reign of
Gordian
III (AD
238-244),
the busts of the
Emperor and the Great God are presented facing each other.
And on the reverse, encircled by an inscription with the city
name, a temple is displayed, which once stood there and was
dedicated to the Great God (Tyche
-
Nemesis, according to
more recent hypotheses). It featured four columns crowned
with Corinthian capitals and a triangular pediment, decorated
with a relief image of Helios in a quadriga chariot. A tall four-
segment staircase led to the pediment of the statue, subject to
worship.
As testified to by the cultural artefacts, discovered in Varna
and the vicinity, Odesos had temples and shrines dedicated
to Apollo, the god of light and the arts, to the godly healers
Asclepius and Hygeia, to the mysterious Thracian horseman,
to the ancient Greek goddess
Demeter
-
patron of agricultural
labour, and to Hermes
-
the god of commerce, eloquence, agility,
and gymnastics. Though worshipped during different periods
of history, all major members of the godly Olympian family
were in fact present in the ancient city. The most important
was, of course, Zeus the Thunderer, the father of the gods, who
shared his reign over Olympus with his jealous spouse Hera,
the goddess of marriage, childbirth, and master of clouds and
storms. The two heavenly virgins, the owl-eyed goddess of
wisdom Athena Pallas and the courageous goddess of hunting
and female chastity Artemis, were also among the major figures
in the pantheon of Odessos. As a matter of fact, the residents
of Odessos paid tribute to the god of wine, dancing, gaiety,
and pleasure Dionysus as well, doing so willingly and rather
noisily at that. It is also easy to explain the presence and the
respective worship of the Dioscuri, the twin Argonauts
Kastor
and Polydeukes, patrons of both horsemen warriors and brave
seafarers. In the ancient Odessos and its vicinity, shrines were
found as well, in which residents worshipped the incredibly
strong Heracles, son of Zeus and performer of twelve heroic
exploits, as well as the Dryads, fair inhabitants of forest springs
and rivers, and the winged Hellenic victory goddess Nike, whose
ethereal images used to embellish earrings, rings, vases, wreaths,
armour, etc. The memory of the gods of Odessos
-
unfading,
live, and glorious despite the millennia-long erosion
-
has been
preserved in the multiple surviving monuments of religious art.
It is precisely there that we may find an excellent opportunity
to reconstruct the pantheon of Odessos. An enormous amount
of
polis
history along with knowledge of the city itself and its
sacred sites has been deposited in the cult artefacts of the city;
they also bear witness of the community life, as well as the
religious and aesthetic traditions of its inhabitants. It is through
them that we can cast a novel and unique glance at the glorious
past of Varna.
Sculptured from gold, bronze, terracotta, or marble, the
main
personae
from the pantheon of the ancient inhabitants of
Odessos now decorate the representative museum collections of
the city. It is due to the dedicated labour of several generations
of Bulgarian archaeologists, restorers, and culturologists that
those artefacts have been permanently re-discovered and
brought to life from the realm of non-existence. |
