Summary: The Various Faces of Nationalism

Politics, Religion, and Ethos

SUMMARY
THE VARIOUS FACES OF NATIONALISM
-
POLITICS, RELIGION, AND ETHOS
Edited by
Bogumił
Grott
The book at hand comprises another volume of studies collected and edited by
Professor
Bogumił
Grott
and devoted to the subject of nationalism. Its predecessor
bore the title of Nationalism or Nationalisms?
-
The
fonction
of Christian, Secular,
and
Neo-Pagan
Values in the Shaping of Nationalist Ideas
(Nomos
2006).
That tome
met with the interest of readers and a positive reception by reviewers (see Politeja
2007,
nr 2[8]; Państwo i Społeczeństwo
2007,
nr
2;
Dzieje Najnowsze
2008,
nr
2;
and
Przegląd Humanistyczny
2008,
nr
6).
Inasmuch as the above-mentioned collection specifically accented axiological
issues in nationalistic ideas and doctrines
-
proposing a new means for their
classification from the position of
a subdiscipline
of the academic field, the political
science of religion
-
the work currently presented goes beyond such matters to deal
also with a broader spectrum of issues. For instance, some of the articles here touch
also upon problems of a purely political or cultural nature such as national language
as a tool of nationalism, or national consciousness and the conditions for its
crystallization; these factors do not constitute the basis for decisive classification
regarding the ethical nature of a given doctrine or movement. As to whether a specific
nationalism constitutes an extreme case, or is ethically indubitable (as
Paweł
Tarasiewicz has put it) testifies its attitude towards religion and its values, or towards
another system of values substituting for religion.
Opening this volume is the introductory chapter entitled Nationalism as a Research
Question in Contemporary Poland, encompassing the editor s initial and very useful
reflections which point to critical aspects of this issue. Here
Bogumił
Grott
sketches
out those difficulties associated with the study of nationalistic ideas and movements
which are not the effect of scholarly approaches but rather those which often arise
from the political convictions of the various individuals interested in the topic.
The next chapter, Concept, Genesis, and an Attempt at Systematizing the Main
Types of Nationalism is penned by the well-known historian of ideas,
Jacek
Bartyzel,
and is of fundamental meaning for the methodology of the field. Subsequent articles
pertain to the influence of Catholicism on particular nationalist conceptions. Belonging
above all to this category is an article by the volume s editor, Worldview Aspects of
610
Summary
Polish Nationalism, in which the ideological metamorphosis of its main formation
(in other words, the National Democracy, the
Endecja)
is emphasized, and the rarity
of non-Christian nationalist concepts in Poland is demonstrated. Such a cross-section
of the topic is of key meaning since it facilitates comparison of Polish nationalism in
general with specific nationalisms functioning in other countries, especially those
neighboring with Poland. In turn, this eases the distinguishing of essential differences
between them and permits the avoidance of certain simplifications and stereotypes not
lacking in this area.
The gist of this article is supported in other, more detailed investigations which
develop separate and individual themes in Polish nationalist thought. Critical here is
Bogumił
Grott s From Catholic Totality to Mono-idea
-
Was the Second Republic
of Poland Moving Towards Totalitarianism? which illustrates how elements of
religious provenance blurred foreign inspirations and influences of a totalitarian
nature, draining them of their fundamental content. This type of process usually goes
unnoticed by historians and political scientists; missing this element deforms or
renders more superficial their interpretations.
Two other contributions fall into the category of a more specific and focused
investigation into Polish nationalism:
Aneta
Dawidowicz s Liberalism as a Threat to
the Nation in the Eyes of the Early
Endecja
as well as
Mieczysław
Ryba s The
Polish National-Democratic Camp
vis-à-vis
Other Nations in the Interwar Period
-
Fundamental Ideas. Both of these scholars are authors of books on the National
Democracy and specialists in the field of the ethical-moral issues of the Polish right-
wing.
Other studies contained herein serve as interesting introductions to such very
important questions as the still functioning relationship between Polish nationalism
and Catholicism. These include Lech Twardowski s A Place for God: The Discussion
Regarding
Zygmunt
Wasilewski s On the Life and Catastrophes of National
Civilization in
1920-1921.
Wasilewski s opinions were opposed by some Catholics
in the name of expelling the relics of positivism in the era of the
Endecja.
Other

Andrzej Trzebiński
between Nationalism,
Universalism,
and Imperialism and his
Nation, Nationalism, and Culture in the Editorials of
Stanisław Piasecki.
Both
Trzebiński
and Piasecki were the creators of various important ideological concepts
(the former was even a talented writer), and that is why their line of thinking constitutes
a good standard of measure and strongly complements the image of Polish
nationalism.
Further contributions to this collection speak of the times after
1989,
the opening
of the postcommunist era in the history of Polish political thought. At this point a
range of old ideological organizations were reanimated which also bore fruit in the
emergence of new political parties. Some of these are covered by
Jarosław Tomasiewicz,
the author of several books. His articles contained in the work at hand are, for instance,
The National Rebirth of Poland and its Vision of The Catholic State of the Polish
Nation as a Contemporary Version of National Radicalism as well as The Polish
Summary
5]
j
National Gommunity-the Polish National Party as an Example of Secular Nationalism
in Contemporary Poland. The former article pertains to a rather small political group
as was the case with the National Rebirth of Poland
(Narodowe Odrodzenie Polski,
NOP).
This organization is especially interesting because it is the only one continuing
the traditions of prewar Polish national radicals. The NOPists stand firmly rooted in
traditional Catholicism which lends this group a unique personality. The latter article
by Tomasiewicz is devoted to a lesser category in Poland, that of secular
nationalism.
Articles which do not demonstrate links between Polish nationalism and a certain
worldview comprise a separate category in this book. The first of these, referring to
geopolitics, was penned by the editor under the title of Europe United Polish Style
or Adam Doboszynski s Idea of the Great Nation as an Attempt to Overcome Ethnic
Egocentrism.
Noteworthy is that it reveals also those aspects of the above-mentioned
publicist and
Endecja
activist s project which can be detected in today s thinking
about the coexisting European nations. Also intriguing is an article by a member of the
Auschwitz Museum staff,
Przemysław
Bibek
-
Polish Nationalists as Prisoners of
KL Auschwitz. On the basis of archival sources found in the museum, this author
outlines the profiles of imprisoned Polish nationalists who organized resistance and
assisted their fellow captives of Jewish descent.
Of quite different nature is Tomasiewicz s third article in this volume. In Race
against Nation: Racism and Nationalism
-
Complementary or Exclusive, the author
presents a captivating issue, heretofore under-explored. Analyzing statements made
by Germans as well as Poles, the author arrives at the conclusion that racism, as a
consequence of the realization of its hypotheses and principles, would necessarily
lead to the decomposition or even destruction of the nations existing today whose
societies are made up of human individuals belonging to various anthropological
races. This subject is worth pursuing on the basis of appropriate sources.
The articles referring to Polish nationalism in particular are worthy of note as they
introduce the reader to quite new perspectives on some issues. Historians studying
this phenomenon generally do not explore the findings of other academic disciplines
since they study generally understood political thought, and, as a result, miss perceiving
various aspects of the observable facts. The contributors to this volume, however, do
not avoid an interdisciplinary approach which yields solid deductions and conclusions.
Hence, even when tackling very specific questions, the authors here also touch upon
more fundamental issues, inspiring others to further exploration.
Beyond the issues associated with Polish nationalism, the tome at hand devotes
much attention to the nationalisms of other countries, both those neighboring as well
as further away from Poland. In first order, one should mention the articles regarding
Ukrainian, Russian, and German nationalism.
Bogumił
Grott
looks at Ukrainian
nationalism in The Nationalism of the Ukrainian Nationalist Organization as
Fascism, The Fatherland Ukrainian National Faith as a Nationalist
Neo-Pagan
Movement, and Ukrainian Nationalism in the Greek Catholic Church and Its
Practices Discriminating against Poles and Polishness during the Years of the Second
612
Summary
Republic. The author identifies anti-humanitarian traits of the Ukrainian Nationalist
Organization
(Organizacja Ukraińskich Nacjonalistów, OUN)
which were rooted in
social Darwinism and rendered this group essentially fascist. The second article
pertains to the little known formation of Ukrainian neo-paganism, but even more
innovative and original is the last of the above-mentioned contributions to this section
of the book. In it
Grott
uncovers a problem long forgotten and expressly avoided
under communism. The Ukrainian theme here is closed off by a posthumous tribute to
Victor Poliszczuk, a scholar of the nationalism shaped within OUN circles.
Not avoided or missed in this volume are problems connected with the nationalism
of Poland s two largest neighbors
-
Germany and Russia. The former was the subject
of the earlier referenced article by Tomasiewicz on racism against the nation, but that
neighbor is also covered in
Rafał
Opulski s German National Socialism as a Political
Religion
:
Nazi Rituals and Their Formative Functions as well as (to a certain extent)
Olgierd
Grott s In the Name of the Aryan
Supernation :
The Infiltration of
International Neo-Nazism in Contemporary Poland as a New Form of Germanization
and De-Christianization via Affirmation of the HI Reich.
The problem of Russian nationalism is undertaken here within two contributions
by Joachim Diec. The first of these
-
as clearly evidenced in the title of The Main
Currents of Russian Nationalism
-
provides a review of its basic factions, starting
from the beginning of this ideology in Russia until more recent years. The second
article
-
serving also as a supplement to more general examinations of this phenomenon
by this scholar
-
is about The Nazis, a pro-Kremlin nationalist organization.
In this volume there is no lack of assertions on the subject of French nationalism.
The author is a perfect expert regarding right-wing movements and doctrines in
Romance language milieus. The articles by Adam Wielomski cover the stance of
Charles Maurras
vis-à-vis
Protestantism, and The French National Front and the
Religious Issue. These studies include key information pertaining to the relationship
between religion and the political sphere in France, using selected persons and
organizations as examples. Not little space has also been devoted to Hungary
( Hungarian Nationalism
-
An Outline of the Problem ). The author of the article
included here is
Wiesław
Bator, a historian and religious studies scholar concentrating
on questions regarding civilizations and religions. The currents, organizations, ideas,
and persons representative of Hungarian Nationalism presented by Bator constitute an
interesting review of the issues. Additionally, Japanese studies scholar,
Katarzyna
Starecká
penned the noteworthy and detailed text entitled The Problem of Separating
Religion from the State as an expression of the tendency to overcome Japanese
Nationalism after World War II.
Closing this section, however, are pieces dealing with Iran and with the Kurdish
nation, written respectively by
Marcin Rzepka
( Persian Nationalism and the
Linguistic Policy of Iran during the Pahlavi Dynasty ), and Joanna
Bocheńska
( Between Hope for Unity and the Experience of Variety: The Evolution of Kurdish
National Identity in the 20th Century ). These articles do not contend with issues
associated with relationships between religion and nationalism, but rather with
Summary
613
linguistic issues and nationalism. As such these two contributions stand apart from the
typology proposed by the editor of this tome.
Finally, the last contribution to the volume is of quite another type
-
an interesting
article by
Marek Tytka,
entitled The Concepts of Pedagogy of National Culture
vis-
à-vis
the Cultures of National Minorities and of Other Nations. The author responds
therein to the issue of national cultures in the united Europe and the policy model
(assessed here as being appropriate) applied towards these cultures.
The articles contained in the book at hand, although they are not of uniform nature
and type, nonetheless comprise a harmonized whole. By illustration and convincing
depiction, they expound upon the diverse issues of the currents and movements, as
well as embedded ideas and values of nationalisms stemming from varied cultural
environments. Furthermore, it is also worth noting the interdisciplinary nature of this
volume, inclusive of authors representing different academic disciplines and different
levels in the depth and duration of their explorations into the problem of nationalism.
