SUMMARY
This work elaborates the history of Matrix Croatica
(MC)
between the years
1935
and
1945.
The conflict between
MC
and the leadership of Croatian Peasant Party
(CPP) culminated in the inforced change of the administration of
MC
three months
before the proclamation of the Independent State of Croatia (ISC). That conflict
started as an ideological confrontation following the death of King Alexandar of
Yugoslavia, in the atmosphere of
reanimation
of the poHtical life in Croatian society.
At the beggining conflict emerged from the apparent political alliance between all the
political currents based on the idea of Croatian national selfconsciousness. However,
very soon two different ideological paths shaped
—
the first called the «peasant» ide¬
ology, and the second that used to be called «nationalism». The
análisis
of the later
brought us to the conclusion that the nature of Croatian form of nationalism in the
30's was equal to those European nationalist movements and ideologies that political
and historical tradition knows as fascism. In many ways the peasant ideology differed
from that sort of nationalism, hence the ideological split on the Croatian political
scene in the
iate
30's. The ideological rupture will eventualy end up in forming of two
confronted political group, with
MC
as one of the main centers of the opposition
to the
croaúan
peasant movement. With the reuturn of the members of Ustasha
movement from emigration in late 30's, the nationalist group alligned itself with the
Ustasha movement. The same goes for
MC, in
whose administration was Mile
Budak,
at the time the second man in command of abovementioned movement. With the
formation of the CPP controlled Banal Croatia, the conflict reached its peak. The
Banal government i.e. the CPP's leadership imposed the measures to neutralise the
nationalist opposition in the Banal Croatia. One of those measures was the change of
the MC's administration at the beggining of the year
1941.
The day after the proclamation of the ISC the inforced administration of
MC
was over. In the new state the members of MC's old administration will take some
important positions in the governmental structures, particulary in the institutions in
charge of the cultural and ideological formation of society. Those members will con¬
tribute in creating
MC
into an
statal
institution with censorship task. That reshape-
ment of
MC was
in part due to the nationalist totalitarian image of the state and
society that was introduced during the 30's. In that perspective,
MC will
hold the same
position in the govenmental structure of the ISC up until the very end, despite some
minor conflicts that emerged between the regime and the leadership of
MC.

But the involvement of many members of
MC in
the
statal
affairs resulted in
filling the ranks of
MC
with those
intelectuais
that didn't distinguish themselfes in the
ideological and political confrontation during the late 30's. Partly due to them, partly
due to the envelopement of the war events the cultural activities of
MC
during the
war were in most cases ideologicaly neutral.
By the end of war, when the upcoming destruction of the ISC was evident, na¬
tionalist
intelectuais
started to abandon the prewar,
antiliberal
ideological agenda. At
the beggining of the last year of war, the leader of
MC will
be the first to make a shift
to a more liberal discourse in order to present the ISC and its supporters as ideologi¬
cal and soon to be military allies of the Western states in the future conflict between
the West and the communist East. Of course, that atempt was in wain. The ISC was
destroyed and with it the old administration of
MC.
Most of the MC's members in¬
volved in the prewar ideological conflict as well as those involved in the
statal
affairs
of the ruined state emigrated. However, most of the members of
MC
that were in
charge of MC's cultural activities during the war remained in the homeland after the
change of government.
