SUMMARY
Activities of the early winter
2007,
in area of the former trading quarter of the
chronicle Ltava and the regimental town Poltava (Poltava, Ukraine), during the
dig of foundation pit of a new administrative building in Pervomaysky
Prospekt
19,
on the Institute Hill, in Cossacks time town boundary, resulted discovery of
new archaeological materials, proving inhabitation of this historical part of the
Regional centre in the Scythian epoch, Romny, Old-Russian, and After-Mogul
periods, as well as in late
XVII
and early
XVIII
centuries.
Small in number, but quite impressive materials indicate the existence in
there settlement, dated back to the early Scythian time. They are represented
with pieces of clay ceramics of the early Iron Age.
In course of the archaeological investigations have been discovered well pre¬
served remains of a half-ground dwelling and a few household pits, dated back
to the late stage of the Romny culture. The fact witnesses that the Institute hill
was inhabited by the chronicle Severyany on pre-state and early states period of
existence of their unions towards the South-East of the Dnieper's Left bank. The
examined objects belong to the South-Western Poltava settlement trading quar¬
ter, which is part of the later chronicle town Ltava, whose name is mentioned in
the Ipaty Chronicle. It is significant that in oven of dvelling

has been
discovered a set of potter molds, what is untypical for Poltava antiquities. Signs
on some of them (a 'bird-swastika', 'wave-snake') give opportunity to make in¬
teresting conclusions in relation to religious and cult views of the people, and the
form of the vessels

about the ethnical heterogeneity of their bearers, among
whom might be migrants from Sarkel, the Higher Psel and Vorskla.
An interesting fact is the discovery of remains of the Old-Russian housing
buildings XI century, which yet for number of times proved the existence of the
Poltava settlement in XI

early
XII
century. Perhaps, the area of nowadays In¬
stitute Hill is exactly the seat of life in the future town boundaries after destruc¬
tion of the settlement in course of the punitive expedition by Prince Boris
1015-
1019,
in purpose to submit rebellious outlying districts of Severyany.
Building and use of typical Romny dwellings in XI century and existence of
a typical pottery complex, in which the Romny molded and Old-Russian potter's

tableware coexists, indicate a long process of joining the Old-Russian state by
Severyanys' society that lasted almost a century.
Presence of objects with ceramic materials, dated back to the
XII
century,
proves legality early stated suppositions of this area belonging to trading quarter
of chronicle Ltava, when it was a part of the Pereyaslav land. It is also applied
to the finds of ceramics XIII-XIV centuries, which proves the Institute Hill was
lived-in in the After-Mogul time.
Expressive materials of the Cossacks time (XVII-XVIII cent.) are important
source for specification of Poltava regimental fortifications zone in early
XVIII
century, and also prove the fact of its ubiquitous leveling at the turn of XVIII-
XIX and in early
XIX
century.
During the digs discovered two potter's furnace of the late
XVII —
early
XVIII
centuries. Examined objects belong to the number of industrial buildings
of a potter's workshop, working in the undeveloped part of the new town, in im¬
mediate closeness to fortifications. This is yet the fifth find of the potter indus¬
trial complexes XVII-XVIII centuries in measures of the Regional centre, which
give opportunity to consider Poltava as a significant centre of ceramic industry.
Characteristics of Poltava pottery ornamentation has some parallels with
production of local and Kiev's potters. Structure of heaters, and number of ce¬
ramic works in them cast the light upon process of forming single domestic mar¬
ket of the Ukraine (Hetmanshyna) in the second half

turies. New finds of ceramics widen the view on esthetics of ceramic industry of
Poltava potters at the turn of XVII-XVIII centuries.
