SUMMARY
The study of the Slavic sites of the South-eastern borders of ancient Russia
has counted more than a century of history. This subject was studied in the works
of archaeologists and historians, in particular by V.Laskronsky,
N.Makarenko,
I.Lyapushkin, B.Rybakov, P.Tretyakov, P.Tolochko, N.Kuchera, A.Mocia,
O.Suchobokov, Y.Morgunov, and others. Despite such a long period of study,
yet, there is a number of unresolved questions. First, it is a questions connected
with the process of demarcation of the Russian borders in the region of the for¬
est and steppe area of Dnieper. Secondly, it is questions about the territories
of tribes and the late Slavic principalities. Thirdly, it is questions on origin of
the administrative and territorial formations, the direction of town foundations
development in this, far away from Kyiv, frontier of the Ancient Russia. Materi¬
als, which are methodically put here into scientific circulation, were received
in course of the archaeological investigations at the ancient Ltava and Vorskla
adjacent area. In some measure, they cast light on these questions as well as on
some others.
In autumn
2007,
it was undertaken the saving archaeological digs on St Ni¬
colas' Hill in Poltava, on which there had been situated a part of trading quarter
of the ancient Ltava. In course of the made work it has been received a valuable
historical and archaeological information, concerning the inhabitation of this
landscape dominant in different epochs. The earliest materials are dated back
to the early Scythian time, or more precise,
—
to VI B.C. The settlement of agri¬
cultural and cattle-breeding population, referred to the local group of Scythian
time sites, probably adjacent to eastern part of St Nicolas' and
Mazur
ravine,
extending the settled zone from an earlier settlement on the Ivan Hill toward the
South-West.
In the measures of the digs, it has also been discovered materials of the late
stage of the Romny archaeological culture, which should be connected with the
settlement of Slavic tribe Severyane, situated on the Ivan (Old Poltava) and In¬
stitute Hills: the direct predecessor of the ancient Ltava. The materials of the
Romny culture signify, most probably, domestic zone joining to the settlement
beyond hills of the right bank of the Ltava brook.

Archaeological
materials, which referred to the Old Russia time and, name¬
ly, to the period of early feudalism (XI
—
early
XII
centuries), are represented
with some more expressive finds and objects. It is said about remains of an old
Russian farmstead of XI century. The farmstead includes two foundation pits
of housing and utility structure and two utility pits. The discovered complex is
important witness of continual living on the territory of the Poltava settlement
between early XI and
XII
centuries. Presence of marks of fire on the objects
could
rise a
question on relatively complicated historical situation in the border
lands of the Old Russia in XI or early
XII
centuries.
Spread of the materials of
XII
century in the vicinity of St Nicolas' Hill, cor¬
roborates the legitimacy of supposition stated before: about belonging the land¬
scape dominant to the inhabited zone of the ancient Ltava, during its presence
in the structure of the Pereyaslav principality.
In process of the investigations, there are also discovered materials of the
Cossack epoch and the Modern time, which make a substantial contribution to
view of the historical topography of the regimental town Poltava and the princi¬
pal city of the province in
XIX
century.
The preservation excavations resulted we succeeded to localise the place of
St Nicolas' Church «refectory», to specify date of its function: since early
XVIII
till the early
XIX
centuries, to reveal remains of one of the brickyards of the late
XVIII -
early
XIX
centuries.
There were found remnants of two cemeteries: St George's Church necropo¬
lis, first half of
XVIII
century and some other one, probably, small, adjoining a
house, late
XVII -
early
XVIII
centuries, predecessor of St Nicolas' churchyard,
that possessed the same place afterwards. In course of investigations were estab¬
lished reference points for research of remnants of wooden St George's church of
the late
XVII -
early
XVIII
centuries.
Thus, the archaeological excavations on St Nicolas' Hill in Poltava
2007
resulted receiving the materials, which discover some aspects of life of people on
the territories adjoining to the border in the Old Russia, and also make contribu¬
tion to view, concerning the historical topography, stages and character of site
development of one of the urban landscape dominants of the regimental, and
then the principal city of the province

Poltava.
