Mortuary practices of the Corded Ware culture
societies in Greater Poland and Cuiavia
Summary
This work is first of all an overview of all currently known sepulchral sources
of the Corded Ware culture in Greater Poland and Cuiavia. Much attention was paid
to estimate the relation to Single Grave culture and the nearest Coded Ware culture
settlement centres in the basin of Middle Elbe and
Saale,
and in the Little Poland
Upland. A social interpretation of ceremonial practices was proposed, along with
identification of main agents structuring the group's hierarchy.
Hitherto, the book of T.
Waga
published in
1931
was the basic monograph of
the Corded Ware culture in Greater Poland. The author regarded it as an effect of
migration out of the lower Oder basin. In the 1970ies J. Machnik distinguished here
a local group, without clear attributes, characterised by sparse, scattered finds,
mostly graves.
The research in Cuiavia and publications of
A. Kosko,
especially his disserta¬
tion of
1979,
were a breakthrough in the studies of Late Neolithic in the Polish
lowlands, including the issue of the Corded Ware culture. A model of acculturation
was proposed, explaining the development of Cuiavian Corded Ware culture in the
context of general economical transformations of Central European Neolithic popu¬
lations and their migrations. It was assumed that the origins of the discussed culture
were related to the rising importance of husbandry among local farming societies,
and to a flow of old-Corded Ware groups out of the Dnieper-Vistula zone. A model
of fast or single-phase interregional assimilation of a complex of cultural features
was built. The expansion of classic Corded Ware culture was seen as inspired by
Single Grave culture populations, migrating out of lower Elbe basin in the under-
grave and bottom-grave periods
(Unter-
and
Bodengrabzeit)
and by societies of
lower Oder group of Corded Ware culture.
In the
1996
J. Czebreszuk published a taxonomical-chronological scheme of the
Corded Ware culture in Cuiavia, based on typochronology and absolute
(14C) datings
of settlement and sepulchral materials. A division to four groups/phases was pro-
Posed, dated respectively to (CWC1)
2900-2500
BC, (CWC2)
2850-2250
ВС,
(CWC3)
2700-2550
ВС
and (CWC4)
2500-2200
ВС.
CWCl belongs to so-called
A-horizon, CWC3
and
4
exemplify the classic stage in development of European
Corded Ware culture, equiv to local-groups-horizon, characterised here by trans¬
formed patterns of Single Grave culture of Jutland and Mecklenburg.
In the work published in
2001
the same author interpreted the Corded Ware
culture of the South-Western Baltic zone as a local variation of the Single Grave
132
culture.
It was characterised in the theoretical framework of
С
Burgess
(1976)
cul¬
tural package concept, as a set of material and spiritual features, including the idea
of skeletal, single burial under a mound, and equipment of individual property of the
deceased, mainly beakers, stone axes and archery gear. These objects were hypo-
thetically linked with the social group of adult men, warriors and/or hunters.
Graves discussed in this dissertation were divided into four main categories.
Skeletal, flat graves
-
single and multiple
-
with stones in the burial pit, were reg¬
istered in
16
cases
(40%;
catalogue numbers
1, 7, 9, 11, 12, 16, 17, 20, 21, 26, 27,
30, 36
and
40).
Comparable, contemporary constructions are known in Globular
Amphorae culture. Analogical types of graves, so-called stone-framework graves
(Rahmengräber),
were discovered mostly in Jutland. Stone settings stabilised wood¬
en boxes or coffins, now rotten. In the discussed area no grave cists made of stone
slabs, typical for the middle Elbe and
Saale
basin, were recorded.
No graves under burial mounds were discovered in Greater Poland or Cuiavia.
The kurgan type of grave was proposed in six cases, where circular ditches
(19, 22,
31)
or hypothetical remains of the mound
(3?, 5?, 18)
were registered.
Multiple graves contained fragments or complete skeletons of more than one in¬
dividual
(4, 14, 24, 25).
The grave nr
1
in Dopiewo
(12),
of one skeleton and a skull
with cervical vertebrae, and in
Żerniki
(40),
where scattered bones of two individuals
were registered, were qualified for the category of graves with stone structures.
The category of single graves relates to burials of one individual in a burial pit,
without stones or marks of a mound
(13, 28, 33, 35).
Cremated human bones were registered in a burial pit
(10, 29)
and on the sur¬
face of the site
(6).
At six sites graves of uncertain shape were discovered
(15, 37),
four other finds
are interpreted as coming from graves
(2, 23, 34, 38).
By referring to initial Cuiavian scheme presented by J. Czebreszuk in
1996
four
groups of finds were distinguished: so-called old-Corded Ware (a and b) and classi¬
cal (c and b).
The typochronologically oldest materials in Cuiavia come from the site of
Kruszą
Zamkowa
(18),
additionally with a 14C date, Bodzanowo
(2)
and
Zarębowo
(39).
The early stage of Corded Ware culture in Cuiavia is also represented by finds
of group
b
(19, 34, 40),
dated between
2800
and
2300
ВС.
In that period the indi¬
viduality of the Cuiavian Corded Ware culture appeared, also the earliest influences
of Single Grave culture are visible. In Greater Poland synchronous materials were
found in Kowalewko
(17)
and in
Oborniki
(23).
To group c, much shorter in comparison with CWC3 group/phase in Czebre-
szuk's scheme, the cemetery in Pikutkowo
(24, 25)
and a grave in
Stary Brześć
(36)
were qualified.
The classical horizon (group d) is represented by six graves in Cuiavia
(7, 9, 16,
26, 27, 28, 35)
and ten in Greater Poland
(1, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 21, 29, 30, 33).
This
period is characterised by he appearance of small cemeteries. The range of occur¬
rence of graves of groups
с
and d, together with late stone axes indicates the estab¬
lishing of a local group in the Northern Greater Poland and in Cuiavia. It existed
between
с
2500
and
2100
ВС.
It stand out by the presence of graves with stone set-
133
tings inside the burial pit, similar to Jutish examples, and by equipping the dead with
conical cups, also called straight-walled beakers, decorated by cord impression in
a form of so-called hanging triangles, known also in the basin of middle Elbe and
Saale
and in the Little Poland Upland.
Before social interpretations of analysed source evidence, the general assump¬
tions about the economy and mobility of Corded Ware population were taken into
account, together with evaluation of reduction of information caused by the post-
depositional processes taking place after the burial.
Physical anthropological analysis were available only for fourteen skeletons,
indicating burials of five women
(3, 12, 12, 14, 28),
five men
(4, 4, 7, 13, 40)
and
four children
(11, 14, 17, 18).
Two men, whose position in the burial pit was possi¬
ble to identify were laid on their left
(7)
or right side
(40).
In three graves stone axes
were discovered
(9, 16, 21),
one of them next to a skeleton lying on its right side
(16).
Two skeletons identified as male were found in non-anatomic position in
a multiple burial
(4).
Anthropologically determined female skeletons rested on their
left
(3, 12)
and right side
(14).
In two graves women were accompanied by children
(14, 24?),
in one by a woman's skull
(12).
The dead were usually buried in a flexed
position, lying North-South
(3, 7, 11, 14, 28, 40).
Graves recognised as male contained stone axes, S-profiled beakers, straight-
walled beakers, cups, pots, amphorae, bone adornments and flint artefacts. Women
were equipped with straight-walled beakers and adornments made of bone or copper.
Children were buried with pots, S-profiled beakers, tools and adornments made of
bone, and jewellery made of copper or amber.
Exceptional burials were discovered at the cemetery in Pikutkowo. In grave nr
4 (25)
two skeletons were uncovered, both lying at their left side, on an East-West
axis. In grave nr
5 (24)
skeletons of fourteen individuals were registered, lying in
four opposite groups. The arrangement of the bodies and the grave goods, including
conical cups and adornments made of copper and amber, possibly communicated the
social identity of the dead.
Prestige objects, mainly adornments made of bone, amber and copper, were
usually found in graves of women and children. Copper items were never registered
in any of grave of men, who in the horizon of local groups were usually buried with
stone axes and straight-walled beakers or amphorae. Exceptionally reach graves in
Dąbrowa Biskupia
(9)
and Przespolew
(29)
contained straight-walled beakers, am¬
ber discs, flint arrowheads and stone axes. None of the stone axes was found in any
of the children's grave.
In regard to grave goods it can be assumed that highest status in the discussed
population belonged to both men and selected women and children. The latest could
have inherited the social position.
The burial ritual of the Corded Ware culture societies in Greater Poland and
Cuiavia was not uniform. Along with single graves several kinds of multiple inter¬
ments were known, also secondary burials were practiced.
Part of the items placed in graves could have been seen as exotic goods. Among
them are artefacts made of imported sorts of flint, axes made of serpentinite, copper
134
and amber adornments. Their social meaning is related to general processes of trans¬
formations in the usage and valuation of material culture in the end of the Neolithic.
These changes manifested mostly in the appearance of the category of individual
property. In the analysed population several social groups functioned simultaneously,
differing from each other by the form of burial and access to the exchange to exotic
goods. The source evidence does not attest the existence of privileged group of all
men, distinguished by attributes like weapon and ceramics of ritual, integrating
function.
