RESUMÉ
SONGS
OF THE POST-WHITE
MOUNTAIN EXILE
The song-writing of Czech Post-White Mountain exiles is an
immensely large area. Nevertheless it has been little explored by
scholars and only fragments have been made accessible through
modern editions. It has been regarded with disdain as being
utilitarian and unoriginal. This book had to deal with these
circumstances. It is a summary of the author s long-standing
research of Czech non-Catholic
hymnbooks
from the Baroque era.
It is also the first systematic scrutiny of the topic. The basic
methodological concepts of this book include the study of genres
and intertextuality as well as comparative perspectives. The
emphasis is laid on the literary aspect of compositions, the musical
aspect is not considered, with a few exceptions (we do so also
because the importance of the melodic components of songs
decreases to a minimum in the work of the younger generation of
exiles).
The opening chapter summarizes the existing research on the
given topic and shows the diversity of perspectives on the
hymnography of the 17th and 18th century and on the literature of
this period (applying perspectives from disciplines such as history,
historical anthropology, literary history or musicology). The
summary is followed by interpretations examining Czech Baroque
poetry from a general, comparative point of view. In the second
chapter, entitled The Spectrum of Genres, the author challenges
the existing classifications of Czech Baroque verse and casts doubt
on the validity of fundamental criteria such as the opposites

/
epic. He proposes a more
sophisticated differentiation of genre in contrast to forms of
publication, which include the
hymnbook
and the broadside
ballad. Besides Humanist genres, contemporaneous books on
poetics also distinguish between two distinct, to a large extent
opposed categories
-
the hymn and the lament
-,
which in practice
appear in various forms (the Christmas anthem, the Easter
anthem; the lament of Protestant exiles, the Passion lament, and
the funeral lament). What is particularly important in
hymnbooks
is the distinction
-
not made in Czech scholarly literature, but
common, for example, in the German-speaking world
-
between
the ecclesiastical song (closely linked with the liturgy and religious
festivals, intended primarily for choral singing) and the spiritual
song (gradually deviating from the liturgical practice, used in the
cultivation of the individual spiritual life in private). Among the
hymns there are, for example,
Eucharistie
and Marian hymns.
Among the spiritual songs there are songs of personal anxiety,
sung meditations on vanity and transience, and love songs
addressed to the Lord Jesus.
The third chapter concentrates on Czech hymnography in
Central European context and traces specific contact zones be¬
tween Czech works and the foreign-language, especially German
environment. While in the 16th century Czech works exercised an
influence beyond the borders of the Czech lands, this ceased to
be the case in the Post-White Mountain period. As early as
1636,
the
hymnbook Cithara
sanctorum by
Jiří Třanovský
features, for
confessional reasons, a number of translations from German
(songs by Martin Luther). It was the effort of
jednota bratrská
(United Brethren) to catch up with more advanced foreign
hymnography that motivated the formulation of Comenius s poetic
programme
-
whose major feature was its openness to foreign-
language (Polish and German) inspiration. After
1670,
the contacts
with German hymnography were further intensified. The author
discovers that the majority of Czech lyrics from the period between
1670
and
1750
are translations, adaptations and paraphrases of
436
RESUMÉ
German texts which were selected from a wide variety of sources
and authors. Thus, poetry from different periods and various
spiritual streams of German literary life was introduced into the
Czech environment. These ranged from the early Reformation
period, the Lutheran Baroque, its latter variant in the form of
Pietism, to the early seeds of the Enlightenment (poets such
as
Angelus Silesius,
Paul Gerhard,
Johann
Heermann, Johann
Franck,
J.
A.
Freylinghausen,
Ν.
L.
Zinzendorf,
J. E.
Schmidt,
Anna
Nitschmann,
etc.). Owing to the German stimuli, the spectrum
of genres in Czech hymnography of the 17th and 18th century is
comparatively rich and diversified.
The following chapters further develop the general theses.
Three of them are devoted to monumental
hymnbooks
of the first
half of the 18th century (Chapter
4-6).
There are no analytical
studies concerning these
hymnbooks.
For this reason the author
has to begin by dealing with fundamental scholarly questions such
as the genesis of the work, its sources, the chronology of its parts,
the uncertain date of publication, authorship and the like. It is the
hymnbook
Poklad
zpěvů duchovních
(The Treasure of Spiritual
Songs) by
Johann
Myller,
published in the German town of Zittau
in
1710,
that raises most questions.
Myller
largely relies on the
canonic repertoire, but his attitude is quite open. He includes old
and lesser-known compositions as well as new
-
or more precisely
newly translated
-
songs. Myller s
hymnbook
is also the richest
source for an understanding of the specific genre of the Czech Post-
White Mountain Lutherans, the so-called lament of Protestant
exiles (to which Chapter
7
is devoted). It reflects, in a rather
distressing and elegiac tone, the gloomy situation of exiles and
also brings comfort and catharsis.
The Slovak-Czech
hymnbook
Evangelický zpěvník
(Evangelical
[i.e. Lutheran]
Hymnbook,
Zittau
1717),
by Daniel Krman Jr. and
Vaclav Klejch, remarkably reflects the way in which a new
conception of authorship gradually emerges in the Lutheran
milieu. This conception is based on the awareness of individuality
and originality (the editors identify and name authors and
437
PlSNÉ POBĚLOHORSKÝCH EXULANTŮ
distinguish between translators and real authors). The
hymnbook
is carefully edited and accompanied with thorough commentaries.
It is a work whose repertoire is the most retrospective and archaic
of all the large Protestant exile hymnbooks. The songs in the Zittau
hymnbook
accentuate established Reformation compositions
(especially of the Orthodox Lutheran stream); it mostly rejects new
layers but also leaves out some older songs. The somewhat weak
and conservative hymnography of Czech Protestant exiles is
aesthetically animated by Slovak Lutherans writing in Czech
(Jeremiáš Lednický,
Joachim
Kalinka
and others).
The most important work of poetry of the Czech Protestant
exiles is the so-called
Lipský kancionál
(Hymnbook
of Leipzig)
which was compiled by
Jiří Sarganek.
Sarganek, a Pietist and
versatile scholar, came from the
Těšín (Teschen)
region in Silesia.
His religious and pedagogical treatises written in Latin and
German were published with the name of the author, whereas his
Czech writings were anonymous. This can be attributed to the fear
of confiscation and prohibition of Lutheran books in the Czech
lands, where the exile treatises were distributed. Sarganek s
monumental
hymnbook
(1,800
songs) offered a transconfessional,
universally applicable collection of almost the entire Czech
Lutheran song repertoire. On one hand, it includes brand-new
songs reflecting the topical needs of the exiles. On the other hand,
the new songs comprise predominantly translations from German,
especially related to the Pietistic Circle in Halle, Germany. The
elaborately conceived textual accompaniments to the
hymnbook
(extensive preface, catalogue of melodies, etc.) are of great
importance for hymnology. The whole of Sarganek s work reflects
the tension between contradictory tendencies that was so typical
of Central Europe in the first half of the 18th century. The tension
was represented by the exalted Pietistic faith on one side and
rationality of the natural sciences on the other.
One of the main aims of this book is to demonstrate the richness
and diversity of Pietistic poetry, because Pietism has been a largely
overlooked phenomenon in the work of Czech literary historians.
438
RESUMÉ
In fact, in the first half of the 18th century, this movement exerted
a notable influence on the Czech community both domestically
and in exile. Two interpretational sections are focused on the
hymnography of Czech Pietists (Chapters
8-9).
Chapter
8
probes
into the outstanding
hymnbook
Harfa nová
(A New Harp,
published in two different editions in
1732
and
1735)
by Jan Liberda,
who was a preacher among Czech emigrants in
Dolní Lužice
(Niederlausitz)
and Berlin. It examines especially the mystical and
erotic imagery of the lyrics (many of which are inspired by German
hymnbooks
written by the so-called Herrhunter
Brüdergemeine),
intertextual
links to The Song of Songs and The Revelation of
St. John, analyzes the key motifs (fire, blood, arrow, kiss, etc.)
and points out the parallels between Czech and German Baroque
poetry. Chapter
9
deals with the genre of song meditation which
was already developing in the work of Orthodox Lutherans
and Catholics in the 17th century (especially Passion week and
eschatological meditations) but is used even more in Pietistic
hymnbooks,
in which there is a wide thematic and generic
spectrum (meditations on the love of the Lord Jesus and peace of
God, etc.). The strengthening of the meditation principle at the
beginning of the 18th century reflects broader changes in forms of
spirituality which inclines towards introspection and individuali-
zation of religious life and towards spiritual experience which is
stimulated on a grander scale by means of private reading.
The final chapter maps out the development of exile songs and,
at the same time, reflects on the notion of Baroque (especially the
Lutheran Baroque) as a literary-aesthetic category. The catalogue
of Czech exile hymnography
1670-1750
makes up an important part
of the book. It is a survey of the topics, foreign-language models
and later reception of approximately
1,700
lyrics.

Kniha Písně pobělohorských exulantů
(1670-1750)
je prvním
uceleným pohledem na písňovou tvorbu českého pobělohorského
exilu. Věnuje se řadě dosud málo zkoumaných děl, např.
žitavským
tiskům Václava Klejcha,
Johanna Myllera,
ale důkladně také
největšímu českému písňovému souboru starší doby, kterým
je tzv. Lipský kancionál pietisty Jiřího

(1737).
Kniha mimo jiné ukazuje význam
pietismi!
pro evangelickou
spiritualitu a literární život období baroka. Metodologickými
východisky jsou žánrová zkoumání, sledování biblických inspirací
a komparativní pohledy, jež umožňují nacházet česko-německé
vazby a vidět pobělohorské literární aktivity jako výsledek
česko-slovenské spolupráce. Výklad doplňuje obrazová příloha
a obsáhlý katalog exulantské hymnografie, který podává základní
informace o jednotlivých písních.
