This is the changing story of Britain from prehistory
to the present day, as it has been preserved in our fields,
roads, buildings, towns and villages, mountains, forests
and islands.
Men were hunting reindeer across Northamptonshire
long before Britain became an island, and human
relationships, patterns of trade and commerce, religion,
warfare and politics have had an enormous effect on
the making of its landscape ever since. From suburban
streets that still trace the boundaries of long-vanished
ranns
to the Norfolk Broads, formed when medieval
peat pits Hooded, from the ceremonial landscapes of
Stonehenge to the spread of the railways
-
evidence
of man s effect on Britain surrounds us. In The
Making of the British Landscape, eminent archaeologist,
broadcaster and tanner Francis Pryor explains how
these clues combine to tell the fascinating history of our
land and how people have lived on it throughout time.
Covering both town and country and packed with
pictures, maps and drawings that reveal how we can
still pick out Bronze Age fields on Dartmoor or
discover entire defensive landscapes from World War
II, The Making of the British Landscape encourages us
to look afresh at our surroundings and see how they
formed and evolved and now affect our everyday lives.
Archaeologist and farmer
Dr
Francis Pryor has spent
thirty years studying the prehistory of the Fens. He
has excavated Bronze Age farms, field systems and
entire Iron Age villages. In
1982,
while working
in a drainage dyke at Flag Fen on the outskirts of
Peterborough, he discovered the waterlogged timbers
of a Bronze Age ceremonial site. In
1987,
with his wife
Maisie
Taylor, he set up the Fenland Archaeological
Trust, which opened Flag Fen to the public. He appears
frequently on TV s Time Team and is the author of
Seahenge and Britain in the Middle Ages as well as Britain
