This book is the first publication, commented and indexed, of the ar¬
chive of an English merchant who was living, running his business
and studying Russian in Pskov during 1680s
-
a unique evidence of informal
contacts between Russians and foreigners on the eve of the Petrine reforms. The
archive is a part of a convolute of miscellaneous handwritten documents from
the British Library (Harl.
6356)
dating between late 16th century and
1695.
The archive contains a variety of materials written in typical Muscovite late
17th century cursive and copied into the manuscript as follows:
(i) the New Trade Statute {Novotorgovyi
ustav),
adopted under Czar
Alexey
Mikhailovič,
1667,
with a cover letter from Moscow to the Pskov
governor {voevoda),
(ii) a copy of the Church Slavonic (Russian recension) version of Luther s
Catechism printed in Stockholm in
1627,
plus several excerpts from the Bi¬
ble/Gospel, and
(iii)
1686-1687
letter exchange between a Roman Vilimovic and
a Pëtr
Ignat
evie
(eight letters from the first and

the letters are two literary works popular in 17th century Russia (The Fable on

The analysis shows that all of these materials have been copied at once into
booklets (bound into the convolute at a later point), most probably late in
1687,
as commissioned by their owner, Roman
Vilimovič
who, based on the letters,
was an Englishman. Unfortunately, the correspondents identities could not be
established because the documents mention no surnames. Indirect evidence sug¬
gests that Roman
Vilimovič
likely came to Pskov from then thriving English
colony of Narva.
Pëtr
Ignat
evie
was a Pskovian townsman who taught Roman
Vilimovič
Russian and hosted him in his house for some time.
All the legal/business documents are related to the Swedish and Eng¬
lish merchants acting in Pskov, and, along with the copy of the Novotor-
govyi
ustav,
indicate Roman
Vilimovič s
occupation. His other interests
are evidenced by Luther s Catechism and the Russian literary sources, both
religious {The Fable) and secular {The Tale). The copy of The Tale is also of
great importance as the earliest one known to date. The copy of the Cat¬
echism is a remarkable evidence of Protestant literature circulation in late
17th century Russia.
The most amazing part of the archive is the letter exchange between Ro¬
man
Vilimovič
and
Pëtr
Ignaťevič.
The letters, written as language practice
(the teacher corrected his pupil s work), show that the two men also com¬
municated on a personal level, discussing a variety of subjects, from minu¬
tiae of everyday life (like tuition, rent, firewood supply) to spiritual issues.
Strikingly, the men found common ground in the sensitive area of faith. The
Englishman shows a great deal of interest in Eastern Orthodox tradition and
rites, while the Russian bravely shares his knowledge and provides not only
secular, but also religious literature. Both men agree that Christians were
born into this world from the same Father (as Roman
Vilimovič
puts it
echoing the words of
Pëtr
Ignaťevič)
and should love each other.
The very possibility of such a dialogue in Muscovite Russia shatters the
stereotype of mutual mistrust and dislike between Russians and West-Eu¬
ropean visitors. It is significant that the two men avoid such issues as icons,
saints, ritualistic differences to leave the path of conflict and seek shared
values. Examples of such relationship between native Russians and visiting
westerners are rare (see, e.g., the dialogue on religion in
Grammatica
Russica
by
Heinrich
Wilhelm
Ludolf),
but they do exist
-
which means that the
Petrine reforms had their (potential) supporters not only among the
boyar
elite but also in certain circles of the urban middle class. This dialogue was
greatly encouraged by the multicultural, rather open-minded environment
of the Russian border market town.
