YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK
Because floras gather in one place information about all
of the plants growing in an area or region, they are a bridge
between the plant taxonomists who are the experts, and users of
plant information, who though keenly interested, are often less
knowledgeable. Up-to-date floras also serve as baselines that can
be used to measure past and future change. A further benefit of
such works is their function as an inventory of species, providing
information to justify protection for unique habitats and plants.
It is gratifying that Steve
Botti
has compiled a new and
informative Yosemite work. The book will find a receptive
audience of botanical professionals, serious amateurs, and
wildflower enthusiasts. The customized identification keys and
lifelike illustrations will help even the casual user quickly identify
the plants.
It is appropriate that such a flora be published at the turn of
the millennium when relatively pristine areas like Yosemite are
threatened by increasing human populations and their technology.
Development both inside and outside the park is fragmenting
habitats, invasions of alien plants and animals are altering the
abundance and distribution of native species, and air pollution is
killing
ponderosa
and Jeffrey pines. This change raises even a
more ominous specter on a global level as human-induced climate
alterations threaten complete ecosystems.
We must make every effort to preserve the ecological integrity
of national parks and other areas for the well-being of this and
future generations. Knowing the plants of Yosemite through the
use of this flora will lead to a better understanding of the
complexity of natural ecosystems and, thereby, to an improved
insight into our role on this planet.

STEPHEN J.
BOTTI
is the National Fire Program
Planning Manager for the National Park Service,
Washington, D.C. office. He spent seventeen years in
Yosemite National Park in the resources management
division, with responsibility for rare plant preservation
and vegetation mapping (among other duties).
Botti
graduated with a B.S. degree,
summa
cum
laude,
from
the University of Georgia. Over the years he worked
closely with Dr. Carl Sharsmith in Yosemite and John Thomas Howell at the
California Academy of Sciences Herbarium to develop this flora. A guest lecturer
for the California Botanical Society and an instructor in botany for Yosemite
Field Seminars,
Botti
is the author of Wildflowers of the
Hites
Cove Trail.
WALTER SydORIAK is a technical illustrator, biologist,
and computer programmer, employed by the National
Park Service since
1980.
He received a B.A. degree,
with honors, from the University of California at Santa
Cruz in both biology and environmental studies. His
drawings and paintings have been included in text
books, journals, magazines, and other sources. Sydoriak
began painting for this flora in
1984,
spending
extensive time in the field and at the California Academy of Sciences Herbarium
and the University of California Jepson Herbarium. On average, he completed
about one hundred paintings per year. Because his skills improved over time,
Sydoriak actually re-painted some of his earlier work for reasons of consistency
and quality.
PETER RAVEN is an internationally renowned botanist, Director of the
Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, and professor of botany at Washington
University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles,
in
1960
after completing his undergraduate work at the University of California,
Berkeley. The recipient of numerous environmental awards including the
National Medal of Science and Time Magazine s Hero for the Planet, Raven
champions research around the world to preserve endangered plants, and is a
leading advocate for conservation and a sustainable environment.
Lesley Randall is a freelance illustrator, graphic
artist, and landscape designer. Her botanical
illustrations have appeared in a wide array of
publications including The Jepson Manual, Handbook
for California Flonstics, and numerous professional
journals. She earned a B.S. degree in landscape
architecture from Cornell University, and an M.S. in
botany from Louisiana State University.
Katherine M.
Hocker
is an illustrator, naturalist, and teacher, who
graduated
magna cum
laude
from Harvard University with a degree in biology.
She also completed the graduate program in scientific illustration at the
University or California at Santa Cruz.
LlNDA Ann VOROBIK is a plant biologist, illustrator, designer, and instructor
affiliated with the Universities or
California
and Washington. Her biology
degrees are from Western Washington University (B.A.) and the
Universit}
of
Oregon (Ph.D.). She served as Principal Illustrator for the Jepson Herbarium
from
1988
to
1993,
and contributed about a quarter of the drawings in The
Jepson Manual.

This landmark volume offers comprehensive
treatment of every vascular plant species known to
occur in Yosemite National Park. It is beautifully
illustrated with over
1,100
watercolor paintings of
flowering species (with close-ups of flowers, fruits,
and other diagnostic plant parts as needed), and
pen and ink drawings for nearly
300
grass, rush,
and sedge species. The book includes detailed
descriptions, plant habitats and locations, a
dichotomous key, an illustrated glossary, and
place name and general indices.
A flora of this type has been long
overdue. The last thorough botanical treatise for
the park, A Yosemite Flora by Harvey Monroe Hall
and Carlotta Case Hall, was published in
1912.
Based on early scientific work in Yosemite, that text is
nearly ninety years old.
This new flora makes reference to classification deci¬
sions and research investigations over the last
several decades that have resulted in sci¬
entific name revisions for many of the
plants. It also reflects the appreciable
changes in the Yosemite flora since the
early twentieth century. For example, over
125
non-native
species have invaded the park, none of which was mentioned in
the Hall book.
This extensive volume is a primary resource for scientists,
botanists, ecologists, and others studying
the health and diversity of Sierra Nevada
ecosystems. It provides a complete
record of species abundance and distri¬
bution, and establishes a baseline
against which future change can be
measured. And with systematic docu¬
mentation of the plant species of the
Yosemite area, researchers will be bet¬
ter able to understand the effects of
geologic change, climatic variation, and
biological evolution taking place there.
Just as important, this flora is the Bible
of Yosemite plant identification for lay
people, park visitors, amateur botanists,
and other interested persons, with uses
throughout the Sierra Nevada. It should play a major role in
sustaining an interest in and educating the public about
Yosemite s wildflowers, plants, and trees.
