Abstract
The book presents the process of formation and development of an artistic and intellec¬
tual centre at Zakopane from ca
1880
to
1914.
In the analysed period this resort, situated at
the foot of the
Giewont
Massif, was a place where artistic and intellectual elite from all Polish
lands divided by the partitioned powers got together. By the end of the 19th century, due to
many favourable circumstances, among other historical, geographical and social, but also
political ones, the
Tatra s
town was informally named „the summer capital of Poland . It
seems, however, that a phenomenon of Zakopane was influenced mainly by the birth of the
Tatra-Zakopane myth and its rooting in social consciousness; an important part in the myth
was played by legendary heroes immortalised in literature, such as founding fathers of Tatra s
Arcadia :
Tytus Chałubiński
-
an outstanding physician and social activist, who already in his
lifetime was named the King of the Tatras ; father
Józef Stolarczyk
-
a first priest of the
Zakopane parish; and
Jan Krzeptowski Sabała
-
a popular highlander musician, mountain
guide and story-teller, immortalised by
Stanisław Witkiewicz
in his book
Na przełęczy
(On the
Mountain Pass) as Mountain Homer . The conviction that the Tatras with its Zakopane,
regarded as Polish Athens and Arcadia of national freedom , had a special role to play was
so common that any action for this place was praised as a patriotic deed
-
no matter whether
it was social activism, artistic or scholar activity, or contribution to the development of sport
and tourism of the region.
At the turn of the 19th century the Tatras village underwent a transformation to trendy
health resort
-
a place appealing to ever increasing number of tourists and visitors who believed
in healing powers of the Tatras climate, regarded then as beneficial for those with health prob¬
lems, especially people suffering from tuberculosis. The Tatras resort offered to visitors from
the lowlands many attractions: numerous concerts, theatre performances, lectures, literary
and musical evenings, and also charity fundraisers as receptions and balls
-
all that made
Zakopane s calendar of events at high season really impressing.
At the same time Zakopane attracted many luminaries of Polish culture and science.
A group of regular frequenters included numerous outstanding personalities, some of whom
even lived at Zakopane. Indeed, it was due to the very representatives of those artistic intel¬
lectual elites, being the focus of the present book, that Zakopane was so special. The sum¬
mer capital of Poland , the capital of the state that at that time had no its own place on the
map of Europe, played a main part in the integration of those circles, making it possible for
scholars, writers and artists from all the three partitions to meet and freely exchange their
ideas. Especially important role was played by famous Zakopane s houses
-
salons, informal
meeting places of three-partitions elites, where a host gathered around himself a group of
regular guests, and important topics were hotly discussed. The authoress focuses mainly on
three selected Zakopane s houses:
Jędrzej Ślimak
villa, where
Stanisław
Witkiewicz with his
Abstract

family lived; a famous villa called
Chata
of Maria and
Bronisław Dembowski;
and also on
the house of the Pawlikowski family
-
called House under the Fir Trees
(Willa „Pod
Jedlami ).
The most important though that originated during those salon discussions was an idea
of Zakopane Style designed by
Stanisław
Witkiewicz. The authoress tries to present
Witkiewicz project against the background of European trends, emphasising at the same time
his innovative invention on Polish ground. The Zakopane Style has been mainly presented as
the history of a certain idea, and emphasis has been put on the reconstruction of
Stanisław
Witkiewicz views. According to Witkiewicz, who ascribed the genesis of the Zakopane Style
to elements of primeval Polish Slavic art, the style was to became a national style, with spe¬
cial patriotic and social functions. A special place has been dedicated to this issue since, as it
seems, the artistic intellectual centre at Zakopane influenced most deeply through the very
idea of the Zakopane Style. At its high, the style created by Witkiewicz included not only
architecture or furniture, but also all objects of daily use, porcelain, jewellery, or even women s
fashion. From the territories of all three partitions, as well as the annexed lands or even remote
parts of the world, Witkiewicz received letters asking him to help design stylish houses or
even small objects, the possession of which was regarded as dignifying, not only because of
contemporary fashion, but also as a peculiar demonstration of patriotism. The problems relat¬
ing to the Zakopane Style were taken up by the press in Krakow,
Lwow
or Warsaw, but mainly
by local periodicals.
The history of Zakopane s journalism dates back to
1891,
but the authoress focuses pri¬
marily on two periodicals that were published for the longest time in the analysed period and
represented high standards. These were
Przegląd Zakopiański
(Zakopane Review) and Zakopane.
The authoress has been interested both in publicism of these papers, and in the circle of their
authors from among the immigrant intelligentsia. Zakopane s journalism played an important
part in the formation of artistic intellectual centre. Publicists
-
usually social activists involved
in numerous initiatives undertaken at Zakopane
-
not only presented and commented on
Zakopane s reality but also actively tried to act in aid of idealised Tatra s Arcadia . This led
to a sharp conflict between
Tomasz
Janiszewski, a climatic physician representing a circle of
immigrant intellectuals, and
Andrzej Chramiec,
the head of Zakopane s commune and at the
same time an owner of the biggest at the foot of the Tatras Hydrotherapeutic Institute. The
conflict was described by
Stanisław
Witkiewicz in a series of articles entitled
Bagno
(Quagmire) published in Zakopane Review. The editorial board of the periodical openly took
Janiszewski s side, and the whole affair served to the authoress as an example of the role and
significance of the press in the history of Zakopane artistic and intellectual centre.
In the conclusions, the authoress has attempted to sum up the role of Zakopane before
the First World War for history of polish culture, while raising the question of the further
fate of the Tatras-Zakopane myth in entirely changed situation of the interwar period.
