The Beginnings of the Formation of the History
of Mentalities Concept in the Czech Historiography
The Czech interwar historiography was characterised by great originality.
Although most of the then historians were trained in the spirit of positivism,
many of them tried to revise its surviving methods and they deliberately
enlarged the thematic field of their research. Thus, they also focused on
history of social strata and groups, large collectives. Above all, representative
personalities of Czech historical science, among whom undoubtedly ranked

Kutnar, directed their research
from history of events towards history of the social process, cultural trends
and towards history of thinking. Against the background of political
history they were appreciating profound historic processes and historic
development tendencies of long duration. Such research was defined in
French historiography through the history of mentalities, which was first
developed by M. Bloch, L. Febvre and F. Braudel. While this approach
would be put into practice little by little within the French community and
some historians would anticipate its methods already in the last decades of
the 19th century, the Czech historiography applied it with a higher degree
of circumspection, which holds true exactly for the interwar period. Such
approaches were identical to methods more consistently applied by French
historians belonging to the
Annales
first generation. Notwithstanding that
Czech historians were familiar with their key writings and also now and
then inclined to a similar approach, no particular co-operation with the
Annales
review was ever realized. Anyway, close dependence of Czech
historians on French theories was proven. They took into consideration
space, rime, position of the individual and symptoms of large collectives,
they managed to describe development tendencies of history of thinking
as well as history of intellectual representations, however, this happened in
principle independently of foreign examples or only with their inspirational
contribution. In many cases the Czech historical thinking turned out to be
absolutely individual and original, as Czech historians who were inspired

by their foreign colleagues theories managed to make the best of such
accepted stimuli. Not only did they accept them but also exploited for their
quest for totally untraditional models of resolution and for formulation
of path-breaking pronouncements and opinions. Also the traditional
idea on the consonance of Czech historiography with German historical
provenience demonstrably appears to be somewhat lame. This statement
is based on the fact that the then Czech historic thinking was comparable
with modem French historiography, even though it was less consistent in
its reform steps and merely anticipated the history of mentalities. Regarding
the problems of history of mentalities and the interest in it, the attempt
to compare Czech and French historiography of the first half of the 20th
century, chiefly of the interwar period, revealed that the scholarly output
of French historians was equally unbalanced, inaccurate and even vague
as the writings appearing from within the Czech scholar community
were. Also in France these were the personal presumptions of significant
personalities of historical science and their willingness to reflect the
partial phenomena of history of mentalities that played an influential role.
However, Czech historiography achieved no conceptual results of those
presumptions. Interest in history of mentalities was apparently present
among the community, nonetheless, it was not transformed into a steady
methodological basis of Czech historiography. On the other hand, it
weakened the positivistic paradigm and the concern about political
components of historic development.
The reader has just finished a book which is to be understood as an
attempt to cast new light on Czech historiography personalities, who have
been seen so far though the perspectives of the traditional interpretation
schemes. Kutnar has been constantly presented as an agrarian historian,
Mendl as a researcher into economy and social history of the Bohemian
Middle Ages, Kalista as an interpreter of the Bohemian Baroque and
especially of the Baroque-Gothic and so forth... Despite exceptions,
their merits in methodology as well as their theoretical thinking are often
ignored. Research into this field is not easy at all, as Czech historians
mostly did not indulge in theoretical and methodological texts, they would
often comment on their approaches towards history indirectly or share
their opinions unwittingly, and thus their thoughts can be retraced only by
repeated, prolific and very careful reading of their scholarly works. Bearing
this in mind, Kalista s theoretical essays and Kutnar s methodological
writings, in which both authors revealed much out of their historical
thinking, can be seen as utterly exceptional.

Another objective of the authoress was to bring to the readers attention
the many attractive features from within contemplations over historical
thinking, the vast realm of possible interpretations of historic texts as
well as possibilities in searching for original approaches which so much
distinguished the Czech interwar historiography.
