nly now are the latest details of 20th century Lithuanian history
finally coming to light. We have endeavored to recover the distor¬
ted information, hidden events and individuals' biographies that were
formed during times of war, crisis and foreign occupation. This is by
no means an easy task as many archives have been lost
-
some were
destroyed, others were removed and hidden or otherwise placed in pri¬
vate hiding-places for protection and thus their whereabouts remain
unknown. Unraveling these complex topics and finding the root of this
information, spread far and wide, and then presenting it in a convincing
and undisputable manner was a difficult yet intriguing task. Over the
course of two and a half years the documentary series "Secret Archives
of the 20th Century" was filmed not only in Lithuania, but also in Latvia,
Estonia, Russia, Poland, Germany, Great Britain, Israel and the United
States. Thousands of pages of documentation from Lithuanian and fore¬
ign archives were collected. It is this data which forms the basis for this
"detective novel" where readers will be able to gain a better insight into
these stories and form their own judgement. The many behind-the-sce¬
nes photographs taken during the filming of the "Secret Archives of the
20lh Century" series complement the textual material.
All the topics from the "Secret Archives of the 20th Century" were inves¬
tigated with great attention to detail and as independently as possible.
The aim was to reveal what went on behind the scenes, any new cir¬
cumstances and as wide a context as possible, and in cases where there
was sufficient data, to construct new versions or to form a new approach
to the events.
THE LAST HUNDRED HOURS
An attempt at recreating the fateful events of June,
1940
from Kaunas,
the Lithuanian border and Moscow during the last one hundred hours
before the Soviet ultimatum and occupation came into force. The steno-
360
graph from the final session of the last independent government is reco¬
vered, revealing the dramatic diplomatic negotiations and brutal diver¬
sions created by the Red Army as well as the political, psychological and
military pressure of the Soviet Union. The suspicious sympathies and
ties of senior Lithuanian authorities with Soviet ruling structures are
brought up for consideration, as is their possible motivation behind the
unconditional acceptance of the Soviet Unions ultimatum. Accessing
the latest documents to come from the secret Russian archives, the exact
timing of when the Soviet Union's leadership ordered the occupation of
Lithuania and their consequential preparation for the huge bloodshed
that was to follow is revealed.
THE
FLOTTENPARADE
This historical detective story could also be called "The Case of the Loss
of Klaipeda" The history of the Klaipeda district may appear clear only
in school textbooks. This section reveals a complex process
-
from the
court hearing of Nazis in Kaunas in
1935
("The Neumann and Zass
Court Procedure") to Germany's ultimatum and annexation of the dis¬
trict in
1939.
This is the presentation of the original and entirely secret
plans of the Nazi's military fleet for the takeover of Klaipeda already
prepared in
1938,
code-named
Flottenparade.
Historian
šarunas
Liekis
came across the document by chance in US archives and deciphered
the military jargon used by the leaders of the Reich, the so-called Nazzi
Deutsch,
as well as the codes used by military intelligence personnel.
THE "LIETUKIS" GARAGE. PARTS I AND II
This is an investigation of the notorious pogrom of June
27,1941
which
took place in Kaunas in the garage of the former "Lietukis" producers'
cooperative. Having closely studied the material found in archives in
Lithuania and Germany, the authors took a completely new approach
to analysing the photographs from the massacre and independently
considered the what, how and why behind the torture of Jews in the
city's centre in full view of passers-by. Despite the fact that exactly
65
years have passed since the event, the Prosecutor Generals Office of the
Republic of Lithuania can neither close the case on this massacre, nor
complete the investigation
-
additional documents are needed, and the¬
re is no such thing as a statute of limitations that applies to crimes of
genocide. The most important aspects are discussed: who was killed
and why; who witnessed the crime and why were witnesses' accounts
different; who initiated the massacre and who actually carried out the
killings; and why did the executioners escape without punishment? This
investigation traces the journey from the
Ludwigsburg
Archives in Ger-

many to the prison cellars of the former KGB in Vilnius. The result is an
independent version of the crime known as a symbol of the Holocaust
in Lithuania backed by a photographic analysis and new historical sour¬
ces. The individuals who were potentially responsible for organising and
committing the crime are identified for the first time-
LOST IN BERLIN
World War II saw thousands of Lithuanians flee the Red Terror and es¬
cape to the West, only to fall into the traps waiting for them, set by the
KBG. Soviet agents penetrated the ranks of refugees in Germany, stal¬
king, persecuting and eliminating those who had arrived earlier. More
than a few Lithuanians were simply grabbed in the light of day, never to
be found again. The circumstances behind certain kidnappings remain
a mystery to this day.
.
This account presents the activities of the KGB
Special Operations Group headed by Aleksandras Slavinas in Berlin in
1945-1947
such as the persecution, organisation and enactment of the
kidnappings of Lithuanian and German citizens, and the dramatic fates
of the persecutors and their victims. Adding an element of surprise is
the role played by British intelligence personnel.
INTELLIGENCE GAMES:
THE FORGOTTEN LANDING
This is the dramatic account of the secret missions of British and Ameri¬
can agents in Lithuania and other Soviet-occupied Baltic countries who¬
se efforts were doomed from the very beginning by the Soviet security
forces. From
1949
to
1955
the Americans and British secretly deployed
eight specially-trained Lithuanian intelligence troops by air and sea into
Soviet Union territory
-
all fell into the hands of the enemy. In this way
the KGB seized a number of modern communications and operatio¬
nal-technical equipment, weapons, valuables and cash worth millions
of rubles. However the greatest value gained by the KGB was the fate
and lives of these intelligence officers. Not one of the Lithuanian troops
trained by Western military intelligence deployed to the Soviet Union
returned from their missions. Some were captured, imprisoned, enlisted
or exploited by the KGB; others were executed or committed suicide.
The last surviving British Secret Service trooper Anicetas
Dukavičius
presents his witness account.
PUTSCHES AND TERROR IN LITHUANIA. PART I
A little-known occurrence is finally disclosed
-
political terror in in-
terwar Lithuania. How did the regime of Antanas Smetona withstand
the many attempted overthrows and acts of terror? How did Lithuanian
362
security forces manage to defend the independent state and from who?
What intrigues did certain
"anti-
statesmen" fall into, perhaps unwit¬
tingly, and who were their manipulators? The contradictory activities
of the
"plečkaitininkai"
the so-called followers of Jeronimas
Plečkaitis
and other
"anti-
statesmen" are examined, as are the "two-timing" poli¬
tical terrorists' actions that caught the attention of the Lithuanian and
Polish Secret Services.
PUTSCHES AND TERROR IN LITHUANIA. PART II
While writing Part I countless documents were found in Lithuanian
archives showing evidence of Poland's incitement, recruitment and
armament of Lithuanian political
émigrés
within its territorial bor¬
ders in the
1930s.
In Lithuania the tension over Poland's support of
anti-state political, propaganda and criminal activities did not abate
for several years, likewise for Poland's plotted rebellions and impin¬
gements. Relations with Poland balanced on the verge of a military
conflict. However, the first opportunity to enter the military archives
in Warsaw turned the research in an unsuspected direction. The archi¬
ves and cooperation of local historians in Warsaw have significantly
enriched and deepened the knowledge about the extent of political
terror in interwar Lithuania. Historian Arvydas
Anušauskas
was the
only Lithuanian historian to work in the Polish State Military Archive
and following the research he revealed another lesser-known aspect of
this period in history. In this double-faced and dangerous game Po¬
land played the
"plečkaitininkai"
card with certain provisions, making
political emigres promise not to engage in
anti-
Lithuanian activities
while on Polish territory.
BILLIONS FOR THE FATHERLAND.
.
AND FOR ONESELF
This section tells of the contraband activities devised by the first Lithu¬
anian diplomatic office in Moscow that were covered up by the Minis¬
try of Foreign Affairs in Kaunas which gave rise to the
"Sacharin
Case"
in
1921
in Lithuania. After examining the first Lithuanian embassy's in
Moscow archives it was uncovered how diplomats and politicians de¬
vised a contraband scam worth billions, how they covered up "foreign
business" and avoided penalties, and also the danger associated with a
scam of this scale, keeping in mind the potential interests and threats
aroused among the Soviet's security. The reputation of the murdered
intelligence officer initially blamed in this case was restored only after
many decades
-
convicted for the contraband of cocaine, he was vilified
for over
80
years with no proof of his guilt.

THE POSTAGE STAMP SCAM
The scandalous criminal case against certain postal workers from the
1940s
is still shrouded in mystery. The criminal activities of the brot¬
her of Lithuanian writer Balys Sruoga, Adolfas, and his accomplices
lasted ten years. This case gained special attention as millions of
Litas
were earned from the sale of counterfeit postage stamps and because
citizens of other countries were also involved. It is interesting however,
that up to now the mechanism behind this scam has not been fully
disclosed, nor has the role of other possible suspects been explained.
Despite being found guilty, A. Sruoga continued to plead his innocence
and treated the verdict as a summary punishment. But what can the
old yet resonant court verdicts hide? The forgotten aspects of the scam
are revealed.
INTELLIGENCE COLONELS
The obscure activities of the French, Polish, German and Soviet intelli¬
gence personnel in independent Lithuania in
1938-1940
are unveiled.
Their interests, methods and encounters are described based on the fate
of three Lithuanian intelligence colonels
-
K. Dulksnys, P. Kirlys and
ƒ.
Matusaitis. The three colonels are bound not only by their common
experiences in the intelligence arena but also by their tragic fate
-
death
in Moscow in
1941
(all three were taken to Moscow before Lithuania's
annexation and executed in
1941).
Just what were these most senior of
Lithuania's military intelligence colonels involved in, and why were they
executed in Moscow? Dr. A. Anusauskas is the only one to have exa¬
mined the criminal case-file of one of the colonels in the FSB {former
KGB) archive in Moscow. After his research the Lithuanian colonel was
exonerated, yet the case-files of all the colonels continue to gather dust
in the FSB archive.
ŽEMAITIS
VISITS BERIA
On June
25,1953
in Moscow's famous Lubyanka building (formerly the
headquarters of the KGB, now home of the Federal Security Service)
a meeting between the captured Lithuanian Partisan General, the so-
called Underground President, Jonas
Žemaitis-Vytautas,
and the long¬
standing NKVD Chief, Lavrentiy Beria, took place. Under discussion
are the surprising last years of the partisan leader's struggle, the period
held as fateful for the partisans, and the complex political context before
and after the death of J. Stalin, Also revealed are L. Beria's "new political
course", the "metamorphosis" of
A. Sniečkus
and, given this particular
backdrop, the increasingly clearer "negotiations" between the Under¬
ground President and the most famous butcher of Kremlin. What was
364
the sub-text for L. Beria's negotiations with the leaders of Lithuania's and
Ukraine's underground resistance?
GOLD SEIZURE
The history of the State Gold Fund from
1920
to
1990
is revealed. From
1940
both the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany sought to gain control of
the fund: the Nazis seized and smuggled out
30
tonnes of coin silver and
took
62.2
kg of Lithuanian gold, while the Soviets aimed to take con¬
trol of all of Lithuania's gold. However, most of it was held in the banks
of Western countries. The United States Lithuanian gold and currency
accounts were frozen and then unblocked in order to finance the di¬
plomatic service of the independent Lithuania; while France withdrew
Lithuania's gold stores. Only Sweden handed over more than one tonne
of Lithuanian gold to Moscow. Following an agreement with the Soviet
Union in
1967,
England used its stores of gold from the occupied Baltic
States to provide financial compensation to businesses whose property
the government had nationalised. It is revealed how Lithuanian state
diplomats fought to reclaim their occupied state's gold from Moscow
and other world powers in the West.
ESCAPE FROM THE SOVIET UNION
Unable to wait for signs of Lithuania's independence, certain citizens of
USSR created daring plans to escape to the West, Some managed to get
away on fishing boats outside of the Soviet Unions territorial waters, or
having delivered shipments to far-away ports, they tried to stay on the
other side of the Iron Curtain. Others left the Soviet Union as tourists
and asked for political refuge in foreign embassies. Successful attempts
at escaping on passenger airplanes or even navy ships would be heard
across the world. However the unlucky ones who were captured,
tria-
led and persecuted by the Soviets had been forgotten. To discover their
stories, new witnesses and new documents had to be located,
lhe
un¬
known authors of attempted escapes, their plans, routes, the operations
of guards of the Soviet Unions Iron Curtain, as well as the faded hopes
and the fate of these characters is gradually coming to light.
