| adam_text | This book is a modest step towards a
conceptual understanding of the complex
relationships between land, identity and
the development process, with Manipur
as the context. It gives insights into the
land systems of the tribes of Manipur
and seeks to unravel the roots of identity
politics in the state, in the larger context
of a development process that is leading
to unimagined poverty and deprivation of
a growing mass of the denizens of the
blue mountains, that we have
allegorically termed as the Tragedy of
the Commons .
Organised under three sections
(i.e.,
identity politics and rallying of troops;
History, politics and development; and
Tribal land systems, identity and
change), this book contains total twenty
chapters, contributed by scholars of
repute. Definitely, this will serve the
purpose of researchers, academics, policy-
planners, and administrators besides one
and all concerned.
Chongtham Priyoranjan Singh is
Associate Professor of Economics in the
Department of Economics of Manipur
University, Imphal. He has been
associated with many expert committees
of the Government of Manipur. He was
also a consultant to the ILF&S in the
formulation of the City Development
Plan for Imphal city under the
Jawaharlal
Nehru National Urban
Renewal Mission. He is presently a
member of the Joint Study Group on
border trade of the government of
Manipur, member of the review
committee of the Draft Industrial Policy
of Manipur, and member of the expert
committee on identification of the urban
poor of Imphal Municipal Council. He is
also consultant to five municipal towns of
Manipur for the drafting of town
development plans. His area of interest
and contribution are in the field of
agriculture and political economy of
development.
