It consists of four basic parts. Part One presents the beginnings of the movement of establishing religious orders in Polish lands in the 10th-12th centuries; Part Two focuses on the 13th century that constitut¬ ed a break-through, since it brought a rapid development of various types of mon¬ asteries and convents: it was then that a permanent network of orders was set up in all the duchies of the divided Poland. Part Three characterizes the transformations and developments in the order movement, first of all within the Polish state that was restored at the beginning of the 14th century and late in the same century united with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania under the Jagellonian dynasty. In Part Four the author discusses the role of religious orders in the society and in the Church in the 13th-15th centuries. He brings to the foreground the great significance of the mendi- WSPÓLNOTY ZAKONNE W ŚREDNIOWIECZNEJ POLSCE 499 St immarv cant movement in the great education for everybody program implemented in the Latin Church according to the program of the Fourth Lateran Council. Part One of the book is a picture of the slow process of establishing the bases of the life of religious orders in Polish lands in the 10^-1 2th centuries. Monks al¬ ready played a significant role in the first Christianization in 966 - Duke Mieszko s baptism - but regular monasteries were established only in the 11·11 century. The oldest one, existing up till the present day, is the Benedictine Monastery in Tyniec near Krakow. During the 11th century only a few such monasteries were established. Their number started growing in the 12th century: the Benedictines were joined by canons regular, the first Cistercian abbeys (from the middle of the century), and the first convents (cf. the map of the homes of religious orders about 1090 in page XX). The 13rh century, a time of sweeping internal changes in Poland and of deep integration with the circle of the Western civilization, has a basic significance for consolidating the religious orders movement. It brings a great success to the men¬ dicants, Dominicans and Franciscans, and parallel to it - which differs from the West - to the Cistercians (cf. maps of the state of these three orders about 1300) in Polish lands of the lľh-12th centuries, as well as in Prussia on the Baltic Sea, where the military Teutonic Order established its state. German colonization, intensive in the western and northern territories (Silesia, Pomerania, Prussia), was significant, among others, for some military and women s orders, for some Franciscan homes and for the Cistercians. Especially mendicants, Dominicans and Franciscans won a strong and lasting position in the Polish society (about 80 homes). The Kingdom of Poland that was restored in the 14th century did not include the western and northern parts with the best developed network of monasteries and convents. However, they often maintained ties with homes in Poland, which - with some exceptions - weakened only with time (e.g. the Province of Polish Dominicans that still included the whole of the old Polish land, until the Protestant reform that had catastrophic consequences for religious orders). Seizing western territories of Kiev Ruthenia (first of all the town of Lvov) as well as the ties between Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania that started at the close of the 14th century and were later transformed into a federation (Union of Lu¬ blin in 1569), brought about a new situation for the Kingdom of Poland. The Grand Duchy included the territories of today s Lithuania, Byelorussia and a great part of Ukraine, and this fact was to connect the vicissitudes of these lands to Poland and Poles for many centuries. Within the Kingdom of Poland and the slowly arising Polish-Lithuanian state the mendicants, with the Dominicans and Franciscans at the head, proved especial¬ ly dynamic. The number of their homes increases several times during the 14th-15th DZIEJE CHRZEŚCIJAŃSTWA POLSKI Î RZECZYPOSPQLITEJ OBOJGA Summary centuries, as compared to their number around the year 1300 (from about 20 to 125 homes). Also the number of homes of canons regular increased, albeit to a lesser de¬ gree (among others Paulinite Fathers, who came from Hungary). Generally speak¬ ing, however, in the world of monks stagnation and a lack of any lasting reforms in great style prevailed. Part Four of the work focuses on religious, especially pastoral functions of the religious orders, that were fundamental for the whole movement. Certainly religious orders played a lot of various roles in those times, in fact in all domains of social and cultural life, but the religious functions, frequently underestimated and neglected by historians, have the key significance for understanding the phenomenon of the religious orders movement in those times. Monastic schools and the intellectual formation, with emphasis placed on the system of mendicant schools, including the best researched and documented Do¬ minican system, constitute the introductory chapter of this part of the book. Next, the monastery in the society surrounding it and in its neighborly relations, monastic districts of mendicants, and the church-monastery as a sacred place concentrating broad social circles in various forms are presented. Religious orders in the education program developed on an ever larger scale in the 13th-14th Church constitute the next issue discussed in Part Four. The problems of monastic parishes, mendicants missions, preaching and confession are presented next. In the final chapter the author formulates the thesis that religious orders played a special role in accepting Christian humanism, so distinctly formed - the medieval studies in the whole world have presented it to us in recent decades - starting with the renaissance and with the Western reforms of the 12th and 13th centuries.
