The topic of this work is the so-called
Včela
(Bee) operation, which was implemented
between
1951
and
1952
by the Czechoslovak Secret Police department (StB) in
Uher¬
ské Hradiště.
During this operation, several dozen people were arrested in the town of
Uherský Brod
and in surrounding villages under suspicion of being part of a large rebel¬
lious group. The people arrested were mainly former members of the National Socialist
Party. The article partly deals with the events preceding the operation itself, i.e. the
activities of secret StB agents. The main content of the work comprises a description of
the investigation of the people arrested and an analysis of the methods used. Attention
is also given to the subsequent court trial.

This essay on the Political Aspects of Post-February Czechoslovak Exiles in Canada
deals with the political dimensions of the activity of the Czechoslovak association of re¬
fugees after February
1948.
In the introduction, terminology is defined and the history
of the Czechoslovak minority in Canada after
1948
is outlined. Against the backdrop of
the fight against the newly established totalitarianism in Czechoslovakia after February
1948,
the piece also covers the reaction of Czechoslovak nationals to these historical
events and the challenges they posed, as well as the assistance given to refugees in
IRO
camps. Within the context of Czechoslovak exile around the world and the activities
of
émigré
political parties, further chapters analyse the cooperation of newly arrived
exiles with emigres and the generational conflict precipitated by the arrival of a wave
of exiles after February
1948.

This article is called The Town of
Děčín
in the years
1945-1948:
A Look at the History
of a District Town on the Cusp of Two Totalitarianisms. It uses available (and for the
most part previously unprocessed) archive sources to create a picture of society-wide
changes in a border town in post-War Czechoslovakia. It chronicles how the politici-
sation of society evolved and the impact this had on key aspects of economic, security
and national developments. The article devotes itself to specific events and occurrences

(which changed the face of the town of
Děčín
in the years
1945-1948)
from the end
of the War and during the crisis of February
1948.
Special attention is also devoted
to political developments, with special emphasis on the activity of the Czechoslovak
Communist Party and its domination of political life in the town after the elections of
1946.
The aim of the entire study is to illustrate the different forms taken by the deve¬
lopment of an important Czech town in the problematic Bohemian border area during
the period between Nazi and communist totalitarianism.

This article describes the situation in the district of
Ústí nad Orlicí
during the period of
the Prague Spring and the subsequent intervention of Warsaw Pact forces in
1968.
It of¬
fers a different, unconventional view of this reform process and its consequences from
the perspective of a citizen of a small district. The essay analyses the biggest problems
encountered by the inhabitants of the region, particularly in the economic sphere.
It gives specific examples of the situation of the local economy and describes the main
causes of these phenomena. The last part of the article charts the course of the military
occupation of the district, the immediate reaction of the inhabitants and the leader¬
ship of the district committee of the Czechoslovak Communist Party. The text is sup¬
plemented with appendices, which illustrate the relationship of the population to the
intervention (appendices
1
and
4),
as well as how the change of policy was reflected in
the development of the membership base of the Czechoslovak Communist Party in
Czechoslovakia and in the district of
Ústí nad Orlicí
(appendices
2
and
3).

The aim of this work is to illustrate the extent of totalitarianism during the so-called
founding era of communism, in which the
Mašín
brothers group operated and fought
against the regime. It also looks at the
Mašín
brothers resistance group itself. The ar¬
ticle briefly describes their resistance operations and also deals with the groups escape
to the West with a view to joining the US Army and fighting for the liberation of their
country from totalitarian rule. Another part of the work is also based to a large extent
on the author s own study. Based on an analysis of press articles from that period, it is
necessary to state that the Czechoslovak press of that time was strongly censored and
monolithic, and that it contained false, distorted and
propagandistic
information. The
East German newspapers were only interested in the groups escape, and they don t
concern themselves with the trial that was subsequently held in Czechoslovakia. There

were more articles in the West German press about the
Mašín
brothers than there was
in the Czechoslovak and East German media of the same period. The West German
newspapers were free. They only dealt with the groups escape and strived to immedia¬
tely provide information as soon as they received at least partial reports of events.

This thesis describes one of the so-called peripheral trials of the
1950s
linked to the po¬
litical trial of
Milada Horáková.
The aim of the article is to reconstruct the trial of
Emil
Weiland
et al,
which took place in
Liberec
between
18
and
21
July
1950.
Sixteen people
were convicted.
Bedřich
Judytka and
Bohuslav Houfek
were sentenced to death.
Emil
Weiland,
Jaroslav
Stadtherr, Jan
Přibyl, Antonín Hošna and Bedřich Macek
were sen¬
tenced to life imprisonment. The other sentences ranged between
15
and
25
years. The
accused in this case were convicted in a trumped-up trial of being involved in anti-state
activity, which had been provoked by secret police (StB) collaborators. The presented
work attempts to confirm this fact and to reconstruct the fates of those convicted.

Like all of the Czechoslovak Republic, the town with the famous name
(Zlatá Koruna -
Golden Crown ) experienced successful and unsuccessful periods during the time
of the First and Second Republics as well as under the Protectorate. Many important
events in the newly established state were also reflected in the history of
Zlatá Ko¬
runa.
The fateful Munich Agreement, however, changed
Zlatá Koruna
beyond recog¬
nition in subsequent years. The disbandment of the local council, prescribed supplies
of food, omnipresent fear and human casualties, in particular, left a bitter aftertaste
for the town s inhabitants. The collaboration activity of
Václav Cibulka
throughout the
occupation and a needless massacre perpetrated by the German Army in surround¬
ing communities gradually intensified the strongly anti-German mood of
Zlatá
Ko-
runas
inhabitants, which culminated in spontaneous events during the last days of the
War. It was in these watershed moments that the local citizens showed themselves to be
patriots who were also willing to lay down their lives for their country.

This thesis deals with the so-called Taistoists, the radical pro-Soviet movement, which
dominated student and cultural circles in Finland at the turn of the
1960s
and
1970s.
It
was one of the few West European leftwing groups to fully support the Soviet occupation
of Hungary in
1956
as well as the occupation of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact coun¬
tries in
1968.
The work charts the conditions that prevailed throughout society for the
establishment of this movement, particularly Finland s Finlandisation policy, which was
characterised by an effort to maintain relations with the USSR that were as correct and
proper as possible. Furthermore, the work briefly describes the development of the Com¬
munist Party of Finland and its split into a moderate majority and a Stalinist minority,
from whose ranks the members of the radical student and cultural Taistoist movement
were recruited. The last part of the article is devoted to specific manifestations of the
movement, e.g. an attempt to push through a censorship law, which would have banned
anti-Soviet literature, and a campaign waged against Alexander Solzhenitsyn.

The
1950s
were a very dramatic period in the history of our agriculture which
was harsh and difficult for many private farmers. The communist government
strived to eliminate the deeply engrained conviction that the private ownership of
land represented the greatest form of social security and was the basic precondi¬
tion for the livelihood of peasant families. The regime endeavoured to repress
these peoples longstanding customs and traditions, which were based on family
ties, and their mistrust of innovations. The objective was to get peasants to come
together in newly established agricultural cooperatives. The study deals with the
farming situation in the district of
Rokycany
within the context of the socialisa¬
tion of villages at a regional level, particularly one of the means of restricting and
pushing out the village rich
-
the so-called Operation
К
(kulak).

The criminalisation of the farming of Josef
Novotný
and Josef Machytka needs to be
viewed in its wider context with respect to the political decree to intensify the battle in
the village. Repeated claims that local inhabitants were refusing to attend meetings, lec¬
tures and discussions on the socialisation of the village as well as allegations that farm¬
ers considered farming cooperatives (JZDs) as something evil, and complaints from

collectivisation
enthusiasts that it was not possible to convince local peasants of the
advantages of cooperative farming and resistance to JZDs is manifested in the public
course of events in the village. All of this increased the probability that the community
of
Svatojanský Újezd
would be chosen for an operation that was meant to break this
resistance. It was therefore necessary to select specific victims. Both farmers person¬
ified an undisputed political authority for their neighbourhood and, as such, they
intervened in public affairs at a local and district level. Moreover, the critical atmos¬
phere of
1951
played a crucial role in their case. A policy of tough intervention was ini¬
tiated by the central authority against a countryside resistant to collectivisation. Local
representatives of the Communist Party and the government did not want to lag behind
this policy and they actively initiated the preparation of an intimidating trial.
