The collection Petko Staynov in the Memory of Time is devoted to a many-sided reflection of the personality of Petko Staynov in the cultural spirit of his time, traced over the years in the context of artistic and aesthetic perspective and spiritual values. Here in are chronologically presented: dozens of materials devoted to the composer, the pianist and the public figure Petko Staynov, as they appeared in periodicals and other publications from the 1920's until now; unpublished papers and speeches from conferences and roundtables; unpublished photographs from Petko Staynov's archives as well as portraits of the composer by famous Bulgarian artists. PUBLICATIONS IN PRINT AND IN ELECTRONIC MEDIA, INTERVIEWS. Here in are presented publications (in printed and electronic media) and interviews (from the 1920's until now), which chronologically represent Petko Staynov as a pianist, a composer and a public figure. The first article (printed in 1924) was dedicated to the young pianist Petko Staynov. Several articles reflect the premiere of the symphonic suite Thracian Dances (1927) as an event in the professional Bulgarian music ofthat time. Each occurrence or performance of Petko Staynov's works caused sincere admiration and appreciation. With no less respect and recognition was assessed also his work as a public figure, as the President of the Association of Bulgarian Composers Contemporary music (1933). After 1944 Petko Staynov was one of the strategists of the new music culture. His work is regarded as the work of a classic, the patriarch of Bulgarian music. As a bibliography, are chronologically listed (the unpublished in this publication), titles of articles from 1950's until now in specialized periodicals, collections and others. Stefan Staynov Based on newly discovered materials are traced back the biography and the work of Petko Staynov. First, Petko Staynov has graduated from the Dresden Conservatory in the spring of 1923, not in 1924. From 1923 to early 1930's he was touring actively as a pianist, initially in Germany, then in Sofia and Bulgaria. At that time he was recognized as one of the best performers of the piano works of Beethoven. Second, the symphonic suite Thracian Dances was already created in 1924, not in 1925 as know before. The discovered original score provides evidence that the original version was called Bulgarian Dances and was performed on a concert in Kazanlak (January 1925). Even then the composition was conceived as a suite of four dances, but only three of them (first, third and fourth) were written. The second dance, Mechkarskiyat was composed as the second part of Thracian SUMMARIES Dances. Discussed is also the question: was Petko Staynov religious? The composer was a deep believer without showing it, which is evidenced by two facts: an article from 1940 dedicated to Dobri Hristov, as well as the creation of the troparion Christ Has Risen (1946), in a hard for Staynov period of his life. The troparion was discovered and premiered in 2001 on the 5th International Choral Festival of Eastern Orthodox Music. Petko Staynov in the Memories ofDoncho Petkov Prof. Elisaveta Valchinova-Chendova, DSc, Institute of Art Studies - BAS The life-time path of Petko Staynov was closely linked to his hometown. This is the focal point of Doncho Petkov's work Musical Past of the Town of Kazanlak. The manuscript stores rich information about the musical culture of the city from mid 19* century to the 1960's. He refers to a memoir type of research, which reveals in a unique way the specific spirit of the time and towards which increasingly our modern musicology is referring to. To the personality of Staynov Doncho Petkov devotes a special place. In about 150 pages the author provides evidence of the composer's musical activity in Kazanlak. About Petko Staynov's Contribution to the Musical Life of Kazanlak in the Period 1945-1977 Tsvyatko Tsvetkov, Cultural Activist The author testifies the love and the gratitude of Kazanlak people to their fellow townsman Petko Staynov. The composer has contributed a great deal of work for the development of Kazanlak's music life. Here in are described some meetings of Kazanlak-er with Petko Staynov as well as author's introduction to the composer, and memories of their get-togethers. The first meeting was at the 60th Birthday Anniversary of the composer in 1957. Petko Staynov's contribution was crucial to the revival of the music (especially the singing) traditions of Kazanlak and its community center Iskra. Chudomir for Petko Staynov Tsvyatko Tsvetkov, Cultural Activist The author comments the Diary of the great Bulgarian writer Chudomir where the writer expresses his admiration for Petko Staynov. On June 12, 1947 was noted: ". Petko is an exceptional person. Everybody who knows him could not be able to not admire this talented, cultured and wonderful person". On January 23, 1955 Chudomir has recorded comments on his correspondence with Petko SUMMARIES Staynov and writer's insistence that the score of the first Bulgarian opera Siromahkinya by Emanuil Manolov, should be stored in Kazanlak Historical Museum Iskra. Until 1967, several more times Chudomir expresses his respect for Petko Staynov and the need for a public recognition of his work. Petko Staynov - A Bulgarian Wise-man Petya Pavlovich, Choral Conductor The author shares memories of her relationship with Petko Staynov. They date from 1951 to the composer's death in 1977, as a partnership between friends and colleagues. The text highlights the human qualities of Petko Staynov and the wise and timely decisions that he has taken as a professional. The author argues that those who remember Petko Staynov, those who know about him, continue to verify their deeds with his scale. His life-work continues to live and his creative work will abide! So it fits to call him - a Bulgarian wise-man. Kazanlak-ers about Petko Staynov According to the Memories of Doncho Petkov Tsvyatko Tsvetkov, Cultural Activist The author comments the memories of Andrei Georgiev for the first performance of Thracian Dances (published in 1938) and the famous singer and pedagogue Ilya Yosifov, reflected in the ethnographic survey of Doncho Petkov Musical Past of the Town of Kazanlak. The memories of Andrei Georgiev contain interesting information about the concert on January 15, 1927 in Sofia. Besides the work of then unknown as a composer Petko Staynov, in the concert program are included the d moll Concerto Grosso by Handel and 5th Symphony of Tchaikovsky. The inclusion of the suite Thracian Dances in the concert program has become under some dramatic circumstances, because the chairman of the Philharmony (at that time) has been the cello professor Ivan Cibulka, and the concertmaster Jan Koch - both foreigners, Czechs. In the memories of Iliya Yosifov is commented also the celebration on January 30, 1938, in Bulgaria Hall in Sofia, with a concert program of Petko Staynov's choir Native Song. The House Petko Staynov as Part of the Historical Museum Iskra - An Unusual Form of Museum in Bulgaria Ivo Kosev, Curator of the House Petko Staynov The native house - museum of the great Bulgarian composer and founder of the Bulgarian national symphonism Acad. Petko Staynov preserve the atmosphere of SUMMARIES 361 his time, the tangible evidence of his life time and his rich creative work. The House Petko Staynov, founded by the Foundation Petko Gruev Staynov is a cultural monument of a national importance. After the restitution of the house, the heirs of the composer repaired it and donated it to the Foundation for use in accordance with its objectives. Conceived originally as a house museum in the course of realization of the idea, despite the small size of the building, the house was arranged as a small cultural center with a wider range of functions. It was opened officially on June 1, 2002. In it was established a permanent museum exhibition Petko Staynov, which was developed in two rooms and includes 15 modules, a music hall and office, in which operates the electronic archive containing documents and materials about the composer. The museum presentation is with a status oí on going exhibition of the Kazanlak Historical Museum ¡skra. The majority of the exhibits there are from the fund Petko Staynov of the museum. ARTIST AND TIME Papers Presented at a Conference Celebrating the HO"1 Birthday Anniversary of Petko Staynov Sofia, Nov. 27, 2006 Organizer: The Institute of Arts Studies - BAS and the Foundation Petko Gruev Staynov Modal and Tonal Layers in the Symphonic Works of Petko Staynov Assoc. Prof. Mariana Bulev a, Ph.D, St. Cyril and St. Methodius University of Veliko Turnovo Based upon harmonic analysis of Petko Staynov's symphonic works (from the 1930's) are examined some specific phenomenas of his musical thinking. Stated is a thesis that the Bulgarian artists - the pioneers or the classics of the Bulgarian National Composer School - provide an unorthodox, nationally and historically conditioned creative interpretation of the tonality, which has no direct analogues. The uniqueness of the tonal-modal synthesis in Bulgarian music, which has many idiosyncratic composer's manifestations, is a significant event not only for the understanding of our cultural history. This uniqueness is an urge to look into the logic of different types of musical thinking and the ability of accomplishing new creative breakthroughs in later historical periods or in new cultural regions. And in this sense the music of Petko Staynov can tell us a lot. SUMMARIES Petko Staynov and Art Assoc. Prof. Ruzha Marinska, Ph.D, New Bulgarian University Examined is a vast iconography of Petko Staynov, which reveals the composer's communication with many Bulgarian artists from different generations - the drawings of Assen Petrov and Iliya Popov, and the caricatures of Iliya Beshkov and Alexander Dobrinov, the marble bust of Ivan Mandov, the picturesque portraits of the composer by Bencho Obreshkov and DechkoUzunov from the 1920's, by Konstantin Tringov and Zlatyu Boyadzhiev, by Dora Boneva and other artists in the later years of Petko Staynov's life. Among them special place is given to the synthetic image, created by Dimitar Arnaudov. Petko Staynov and Bulgarian Church Music Assoc. Prof. Julian Kuyumdjiev, Ph.D, Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts - Plovdiv Here in is examined an unknown until recently manuscript from 1946 - of the troparion Christ Has Risen by Petko Staynov, found in his personal archives in 2001. Alleged are two hypotheses regarding its creation. First, the troparion was commissioned, and most likely performed, perhaps there are others, unknown until now in braille encoding. Second, the troparion was written in a difficult for the composer moment, and it could be assumed that reflects the need of creating a sung prayer. Staynov himself says: "Seeking God is an expression of the spiritual nature of man. It is his striving towards the absolute virtuousness.". The troparion music brings out the beauty of the composer's choral works. About the Presentation of the Composer Petko Staynov on High School Level in the General Education School (Practices of Historic and Aesthetic Interpretations) Assoc. Prof. Rossitsa Draganova, Ph.D, Institute of Art Studies - BAS Analyzed is the composer Petko Staynov's presentation in some of the textbooks for high school level of the general education school system, problematized is the question of the historic and the aesthetic interpretations of his work. They are considered in the light of issues such as building and strengthening the notion of identity and/ or formation of a flexible system of values, belonging to the core of our national musical culture. In other words, the report speaks primarily about textbook texts dedicated to the composer Petko Staynov, which became the basis for gaining knowledge about specific works, and with that - about a specific period of the development of the Bulgarian musical culture. SUMMARIES Ensemble Dragostin-Folk - A Model of Transformation of the Ratio Folklore - Scene at the End of the 20th Century Assoc. Prof. Angelina Petrova, Ph.D, Institute of Art Studies - BAS In the context of the relationship folklore - scene specifically are examined the works of the composer Stefan Dragostinov and his ensemble Dragostin-Folk as an example of alternati veness in the artistic and media life of the folklore. The validation of the ensemble takes place during the period of transformations of the genre framework, typical for the period after 1990's. The creative breakthrough in the ratio folklore - scene, made by the composer with Auditory Icons, is mostly looking towards the future. In the synthesis of its linguistic purity, and in an incredibly high performance standard and purification, Stefan Dragostinov achieved unity of the untranslatable - Bulgarian. This is the stage at which the idiosyncratic - Bulgarian became a part of multi-diversity compositional discoveries in the world. Petko Stay nov and the Problem of the Archetypal in the Context of the Art Paradigms of1920's and 1930's Assoc. Prof. Spartak Paskalevski, Ph.D, St. Konstantin Preslavsky University of Shumen It is well known, that Petko Staynov was in contact with musicians, writers and artists and was constantly surrounded by them. He himself was an interesting and desirable conversationalist, and for the artists - also a model for creative transformation. His portraits were painted by outstanding Bulgarian artists at the beginning of his creative life as well as in his later years. In this paper is analyzed Petko Staynov's position toward the musical material in the light of European cultural processes and their paradigms for the period of the 1920's - 1940's. Petko Staynov's Symphonic Poem Legend in Bulgarian Periodicals Until 1944 Prof. Stefan Harkov, DSc^t. Konstantin Preslavsky University of Shumen The symphonic poem Legend occupies a special place in the creative work of Petko Staynov. This is the first work of the composer created after his establishment in Sofia in 1927. The premiere took place on January 1, 1928 by the Sofia Opera Orchestra conducted by Isay Dobroven. Unlike the symphonic suite Thracian Dances, the symphonic poem Legend remained misunderstood in the Bulgarian periodical press until 1944. It was a subject of serious analysis only once- in the newspaper Bulgarian National Theater in 1931. Examined are the published materials about the composition, as the author's reactions are rationalized in the context of the entire body of the creative work of Petko Staynov and the Bulgarian music life at that time.
